I never knew about the Windows Experience Index until a few minutes ago when I was reading an article about RAM. I just checked mine and I was surprised that my RAM score is only 4.1/5.9 Does that seem low? I have 4gb of Kingston memory installed, and windows says it detects 3069MB/4gb. Does this also seem low?
All of my other scores are high, like 5.9 for graphics and 5.2 for cpu.
What do all of your scores look like?
-
-
I think mine is at a 4.1
the WEI is out of 6... so no, a 4.1 is NOT low.
the Maximum WEI is actually 9.9 but they havn't defined what 6 and up should be, so the highest you can score is a 5.9
3069MB out of 4GB is rather normal. it's a 32bit OS and can only address 4 gibibits of memory... as such, after you deduct the amounts for the video card, reserved memory, PCI reservations, etc, you end up losing about 1GB of system memory so that the system can address all the other memory in there... -
32 bit OS can only use upto and register 3069MB even if you have 4GB installed, the rest DOES NOT go to anything else, it just sits idle.
?
My score is
Processor 5.1
RAM 4.8 (even thought I upgraded and it didn't change at all)
Graphics 5.9
Gaming Graphics 5.5
HD 5.1 -
Processor 5.9
RAM 5.5
Graphics 5.9
Gaming Graphics 5.9
HD 5.9
Really annoying with the 5.5 ram score -
there's actually a relatively small amount that's "sitting idle"... I'd guess that window is 512MB or less.
Larger RAM will not increase your RAM score, FASTER RAM will increase your RAM score. which is to say, if change a 1GB stick for a 2GB stick, all other things being equal, your WEI will remain the same for RAM.
but, for example, if you changed a DDR2 PC2-3200 1GB dual channel kit (at 7-6-6-15) for a PC2-5400 4GB dual channel kit (at 5-5-5-12), you'd see a difference in the WEI Score.
There's a lot more that goes into this stuff than just what's most expensive or largest...
Edit: I'd also like to point out, I'd post my WEI scores, but they're not displaying on my laptop for some reason right now... I probably turned off the associated service... my base score is actually a 5.1 ... I think the lowest was RAM aswell. -
My HP laptop has a WEI for memory as 5.9. i switched the RAM modules over to the Toshiba, re-done a WEI test and still appeared as 4.8. -
I admit the ram scores are entirely system dependent... if the system is slow, then the ram can't perform... maybe a northbridge problem? or perhaps toshiba has just tinkered too much with the system?
whatever the case, that sucks.
but WEI scores aren't the be-all and end-all. I'm not even sure why anyone bothers with them.... -
i've got:

i blame the ram. -
I believe we won't see RAM > 5.1 on current Santa Rosa laptops.
-
probably not, unless maybe someone uses DDR3 RAM (same connector, right?) and that automatically downclocks to like CAS 1 or 2....
-
CPU - 5.3
RAM - 4.8
Graphics - 5.9
Gaming graphics - 5.8
HDD - 5.3
Score = 4.8 -
I havea 5.1 which is fine to me its right up there with my 1 year old desktop
-
whizzo, you have 4gb of kingston ram as well, yet you have 5.1 and i have 4.1
I'm not too concerned about these WEI scores, but I just find this difference strange. -
The memory score is low because it can only run at ~667 mhz
-
Processor Cacluations per sec 5.3
Memory Ram Memory Operations per sec 5.1
Grapics Desktop performance for windows Aero 5.9
Gaming Grapics 3D business and gaming grapics 5.5

I don't trust WIE, take a look at my score.
Specs below, vista 64 bitAttached Files:
-
-
CPU: 5.4
RAM: 5.1
Graphics: 5.9
Gaming: 5.8
HDD: 5.7 ( I havethe identical WD drive as you)
so, yeah, whether yours is more accurate, or mine - the point is that the WIE is a false benchmark, an not a truly accurate measure of system peformance. -
^ totally agree! I'm pretty sure mine are way off, i don't THINK I've seen desktops with memory at 1066mhz get a 5.9. Same with the CPU, its same as someone with x9000.

My specs are in my sig. Crappy Dell branded RAM and a decent HD keep me from getting perfect scores all the way around.
What are your Windows Experience Index base scores?
