Yeah I have a backpack, the swiss gear ibex. It's a little bit of a tight fit but it works just fine honestly

I didn't go for a messenger bag for several reasons:

-M17x and assorted gear with it is mighty heavy, prefer to have that weight evenly distributed

-Had the messenger bag style bags before and didn't like them

-Easier to move for me with a backpack on, no swinging messenger bag hitting my knees or hips or whatever

-Not trendy enough for a messenger bag lol :)

That being said it really comes down to personal choice, and the backpack was better for me.

I got a bad one for mine its the WoW backpack for the XPS WoW edition, found it on ebay for 50 bucks, fits the 17 nice and snug, plenty of room for power supply and various gear. they still have some left I think, probably not gonna interest you if you're not a WoW fan

I have the Swissgear Carbon, its very similar to the Ibex but a couple of centimeters bigger overall and I think a better fit.
It is however a custom job for Apple and only available online. I guess it won't be there much longer as its in teh section for discontinued laptops - old 17" Macbook Pro

Best of all, unlike the ibex or pegasus (other 17" model by SwissGear) its black - guess the Carbon name gives it away.

M17x is a snug fit but the bag is pure class

SwissGear Carbon Backpack for 17" MacBook Pro - Apple Store (U.K.)

Its in the US shop too for $99.95

I have the Orion Messenger Bag and I am very pleased with it. I thought it was classier looking then the back pack and it fits a huge amount of stuff. The Alienware logo stuff is very discrete and I feel equally comfortable with taking this to either a business meeting or a Lan party. The build quality is amazing and I am very pleased with my purchase.

I got the Alienware Backpack for Christmas last year and I have been very pleased with it.

It holds everything that I need.

Don't get it from Alienware though its to expensive. Try searching for better deals throughout the web. I got mine for about 80 shipped.

The backpack designed for Alienware is very nice, and DON'T buy it from Dellienware, buy it from ANTOnline, they carry it for like $65 USD. Its very well constructed, and is designed to carry two M17x's.

I am a backpack fiend. I love getting new laptop backpacks that keep me organized and have a large capacity. I got my first backpack way back in '06, it was the older alienware backpack. It has been all over the world with me and still looks new. Since then i have gotten many more. I keep going back to the alienware bag. It's just the best and is geared toward a gamer/geek. I use these bags almost exclusively for work.

I need to get something more "classy" for business meetings. I'm the only one that ever has a backpack. So I'm going to finally give into a messenger bag. I want to go with alienware since the backpack had been my favorite over the years.

    Two questions.

First, is your bag the new TSA compliant one? If so, can you post pics of the insides? I want to see how the new TSA compliant one compares to the old revision. I can't find any reviews or pictures of the new version, at least inside views.

Second, can it still fit two 17" laptops and additional accessories? I carry a MacBook pro 17", iPad, router, headphone case, headphone amp, occasionally a 17" Dell and business papers. Think all this would fit in the messenger? Fits in my current alienware backpack.

I also prefer messenger style bags over backpacks to carry my laptop. A very spacious option is the 17” clamshell messenger bag from Briggs & Riley. The messenger bag has lots of room for a laptop, peripherals, stationery, and tech gear. I most wear it cross body, but sometimes use the top handle as well.

Where I am at, I use a backpack. For international travel, I have this very nice Samsonite laptop carryon. It's got the right balance of size (not too big) and capacity.

It wasn't backpack, it was just a typical laptop case.

I prefer backpacks for heavy laptops. Right now Im using a mobile edge one that holds my 17in and has tons of room to spare without bulging out too much when stuffed. I love it, but after 5 or so years of tough abuse one of the seems is coming undone. Although it hasnt effected the bags ability to haul stuff I fear one day it might so Im in the market for a new bag. I love the Oakley bags, but they are expensive. I think I may just try and hold out a while until I find the perfect one.

As for the messenger vs backpack debate well IMHO the 2 that I have the backpack holds alot more, but is alot less professional. I am kind of embarrassed when I take it into a meeting with a client. But then again I will probably be teased for using an alienware (when mine arrives) anyways so I think Ill stick with a backpack.

Depends on your clientele. The AW formfactor will not a big deal, indeed the new style looks pretty cool anywhere.

But for corporate clients, yeah, walking in with a backpack is not the most professional image. But for other types of clients, like artists studios, a backpack fits right in.

Yeah I work in a corporate environment, but Im the IT manager so when i bring my dell or any fancy desktop to work they all chuckle and move on. I assume the same will be done for when I get my m17x. As for a backpack I guess I really don't see clients outside of the office rso I really dont have to worry much about what bag Im using. But since Im looking for a career change into software I may get a better messenger just in case I need to look more professional.

Me too. I'm tired of working in remote hellhole locations. Started my own business, an AW and a nice bag is part of the "decor".

I used to use a roller bag (convertible into a backpack but never used it as such) - from 2002 until I got my M1730 last Nov. It was too big for my bag. I loved that bag - $25 at Costco and the thing has about 400,00 frequent flier miles on it. No way is the M17x going to fit either.

In Nov, I changed to a Swiss Army backpack (forget which one). It's been great and clients don't seem to care. The laptop gets unpacked and the bag sits under the desk or cube anyways.

    At one client, we had another consulting company co-working with us and one of their guys had a goofy, all-painted up backpack - like a slappa. That got a few chuckles in the boardroom. But he had a black MacBook so everyone just started j3rking 0ff about the black case and the backpack was forgotten... {lol}
