    I don't think the hard drive has any specific policy. You can use any hard drive you want without it affecting the warranty.

    You will have to return it or they will charge you for it at their going rate.
    So if you decide to keep it, just expect to pay.

    I had a different experience from Dell back when i had my XPS M1710 the Hardrive died reported it to Dell.Got a replacment the following day with a tech to fit it :rolleyes: .On his departure he picked up drive that had died i told him that although hd was dead he was not taking it as data is recoverable & had lots of work related stuff on it,He was adamant he would take new drive & leave which was fine by me.He called Dell & explained situation Dell had no problem with me keeping old drive he left with his tail between his legs ;)

    keeping the old hard drive from what type of exchange?

    i've never returned a dead HD when replaced under warranty. can't run DBAN on a dead HD and I'm not giving away my data.

    In a system exchange, I've returned the hard drive after a long DBAN run.

    I suppose I could go by the junkyard and have the big magnet that lifts cars degauss them but the guy has a really mean dog.... {chuckle}
