I have to remove it during the process applying new thermal paste on the NB. However, is it critical to dissipate heat? If so, what is it and where to purchase some new ones?

DO NOT USE THERMAL PASTE ON THE NORTBRIDGE... it requires the thickness of the pad that was on there. if you already removed it and disposed of it i highly suggest you get a new pad or make a copper shim to go between the heatsink and the nb..

Hello kampfen, that would be the thermal tape if it is a sticky blue tape-like substance. As posted above, you will want to replace that if it was removed. You may want to contact our AW support team for additional assistance with that.

Additional information is also available via our knowledge base at- http://4help.alienware.com/cgi-bin/alienware.cfg/php/enduser/std_alp.php?p_sid=to5EKmyj&p_lva=&p_li=&p_accessibility=0&p_redirect=&p_page=1&p_cv=&p_pv=&p_prods=&p_cats=0&p_hidden_prods=&cat_lvl1=0&p_scf_4=205&p_search_text=thermal+&srch_btn_submit=%C2%A0%C2%A0%C2%A0Search%C2%A0%C2%A0%C2%A0&p_new_search=1&p_search_type=answers.search_nl

Thank you guys. I think I am OK with it now. I have applied plenty of thermal paste on the northbridge, maybe that is the reason why it has not given up since I removed the thermal pad. But I will take your advice and get my AW a copper mod tomorrow.

Thank you, guys. And you, Rose.

use 1/16th " copper and make it slightly bigger then the die of the nb i would also polish it if it was me as well. i have already done this so i can tell you i tried many things and this is by far the best thing for the notebook

Z, do you mean inch in 1/16th? And what is the exact length and width you applied on your CPU? I don't have a ruler on hand, so hope you can help me out. Thank you.

yes correct. i dont have the system here to measure i will as soon as i can im away for the next 2 days. but it needs to be just bigger than the die itself of the chip.. so if you take off the heatsink you will see the die. just make a shim that is just larger than that. ill report back when i get home

Hi, yesterday I tried to install a copper chip onto the NB, and put Antec Silver 5 on both sides. However, the situation with the stuttering just got worse. When I removed it, everything was fine by now. I am totally confused. Can you open a new thread and give out a detailed illustrated instruction about the copper mod? That will be really meeting the need of rookies like me. Thanks.

do you mean the copper mod thread for the XPS machine?

I did exactly what the way it was to my NB, however, just didn't work.
