I have the M15X fully loaded with 4gb ram from alienware and so forth, but im kind of dissapointed in the performance to be honest. Im really used to fully loaded desktops and this is my first laptop so I guess its just a change to get used to.
Anyways, whats the very best ram available for this laptop? Price doesnt matter, im looking for just the best, and would installing it void the warranty?
If someone can direct me to a link, on newegg, or anywhere with the best of the best ram for the m15x that would be really helpful thanks![]()
Also would I notice performance increases? Heating issues? Anyone done this before?
Help![]()

the absolute, very best is SO-DIMM DDR2 PC-6400 800mhz RAM with heatsinks. they're also a gigantic waste of money.
-
There is actually none, and all of them are best
So you got the idea? Any branded RAM, which you can get for cheapest price is good enough. Look for Crucial 667MHz RAM over newegg.com or any 667MHz PC-5300 RAM for the cheapest price. -
well, you could make a case that the 800mhz stuff will have lower latency, and the heatsinks will increase efficiency and speed a bit (an NBR user proved this!)...
-
The thing is I dont really know what kind of ram will fit the motherboard in the m15x or whatever....
PC-??? ???mhz
I'm just looking for a performance increase over the generic ram alienware gives, can someone link me to a specific product please... -
I had ordered this one and it works great on my m15x
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148201
Newegg says that it's PC5300 but it is actually PC6400 as detected by CPUID. It has got Micron chip.
Check out the CPUID details of my RAM here - http://forum.notebookreview.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=22658&d=1218984019 -
haha me and findvikas are literally on the same page regarding this matter, it seems...
-
great minds think alike, right ?
-
it would seem so, old chap
-
Theres no better ram then that?
Im looking for the best of the best... -
You will not be able to make out the difference in RAM speed unless its DDR3 which is not supported in m15x. It is more about the CAS latency and Chip used to fabricate the RAM. Micron is world leader in memory chips and Crucial uses those Micron chips with the perfect blend of speed and CAS latency to work flawlessly.
Are you going to run Vista 32bit ? If yes then even if you buy world's best RAM for double the price it will still not be able to utilize full 4gb RAM. To utilize the full 4gb of RAM you need to be running on 64bit Windows.
I would save (if I can) few bucks on RAM and spend them somewhere else, RAM is very important part but the brand does not make huge difference unless the specs are different. Most of the 667MHz RAM built up with same specifications and will perform 99% of times at same performance.
The decision is your, newegg.com has couple of different vendors to choose from. Crucial is my favorite, Qimonda & Corsiar is what Alienware uses. -
You have 4GB in your notebook now? And you want faster memory in your notebook? You will not notice any performance increase what-so-ever or even see any if buying any faster with lower latency or such. Amount of ram is the most vital between speed and size. So if you have 4GB i don't see what you should upgrade too as that will be throwing away money for nothing.

I bought the 4GB kit from AW. so I'd like to dispel this myth about "Generic RAM". When I actually looked INTO the RAM they gave me (Netlist), I found a company pioneering the memory front... yes, it's true they're and OEM company and I'd probably never have gotten my hot little hands on their RAM other than by buying a computer with it pre-installed... this is true, however, the specs on the RAM are as good as just about every other stick on the market for the rating that the m15x will accept.
DDR2 667Mhz 5-5-5-12.
I think the best on the market for DDR2 667 is a cas latency of 4... And the difference won't even matter. you're talking about half a clock cycle on the FSB. HALF.
if you really wanted to buy 800Mhz ram and squeeze the ram down to a lower CL, fine. that'd be a GREAT idea... except one thing... you can't customize the CL timings on the m15x. oh snap.
My point is, the 4GB kit, of "generic" RAM is not only as fast as just about everything on the market, but it's also engineered to be cool (no need for heat spreaders, etc)... does better RAM exist? yeah, of course. will it fit into the m15x and make it run faster? no. it will not. Honestly, if you're THIS obsessed about speed, go buy a sager with montevina or something... if you're THIS obsessed about WASTING perfectly good cash on stuff that won't actually do anything, why not throw it at a charity instead? they're always BEGGING people for money. -
Im using crucial on mine and notice a huge performance differences!!!!! rather than the stock one that i purchase with my m15x!! OMG!!!
actually when i bought the m15x, it has a stock of 2gb ram LOLso i just upgrade it with a 4gb crucial by myself
but hey in my opinion a good ram is from Crucial. Because?? everyone recommend it and i used to ask your same question at this forum also a long time ago about what ram should i use LOLZ -
It's good to ask, I researched on most of the parts before actually buying it. I rang AW close to 10 times before placing order and was 'really' impressed with the pre-sales team. They really helped me and without getting annoyed answered all my questions. Yes I did asked about HDD, SDD, RAM, MotherBoard, BIOS, LCD, TouchPad and lots of other internal hardware stuff. I compared all the brands that they used or recommended if I am going for self upgrade.
Then I bugged many people here at NBR, thanks everyone, to get my myths clear. I realized that Alienware may not be best, but really there is no comparison. It is a true style statement, it makes you stand out... ohhh I am in love with this machine -
on the debate about RAM brands: all the "big names" like Crucial, OCZ, Kingston, Mushkin, Corsair, etc. get their RAM chips from the same two or three Taiwanese companies (such as Micron or Qimonda). so you're really getting a very similar (and good) product regardless of which brand you actually buy in the end.
-
As vikas said + there is so much potential. Especially with coders around like vikas
-
I have 4gb of Qimonda memory in mine.
Also, as other users have said, the max this computer can support is what you already have... ddr2-5300. You can get some with lower latencies but you have no way to set them on the m15x. So no matter how much money you throw at ram you aren't going to notice any performance difference. -

Why don't you keep the four gigs you've got, and if you must spend money, send it Here! and make a real difference
-
Mine came stock with 1gig of qimonda I believe but I upgraded myself to 4 gigs of corsair. Crucial is good also.
-
I am getting 2 of this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145172
and Its the cheapest I can find. I don't think there will be ANY noticeable difference between it and any other RAM that you could spend more money on. -
Probably nothing noticeable. Corsair is a solid brand anyway.
What is the very best ram available for the M15X
