I have an M9750 i am reviving, it currently has a T7600 processor in it . I was thinking i would upgade it as well. what is the fastest processor that will fit ? Will any Meron work ? Will a Penryn work ?
Will the x7900 work ?
I don't want to change the mobo, so i am just looking at what processor i can do a direct swap with.

So i did some research (which i probably should have done before making this post) it seems my chipset supports only socket M processors and 667 FSB. Making my T7600 the fastest cpu. obviously i could install the T7700, T7800, and the X7900 but they all have a FSB of 800, which would work but would automatically downclock the FSB to the chipsets' 667fsb. I am not interested in overclocking the FSB since i am giving this computer to my son when i am done (I use the m17x).
so the only question i have is will the X9700 give me any increased performance ? Cost isn't an issue since i have one of these already pulled from another system. -
Isn't the Chipset different? X7900 uses PM965 and the M9750 is 945PM...first gen Core 2 Duo...I don't think it would even boot up or work?
Give it a try and let us know! -
any memron CPU

The X7900 is a meron, but its an 800fsb CPU while the m9750 945M chipset has a 667FSB, so yes the X7900 will work, i am just wondering if the X7900 would be an improvment considering it will be throttled back because of the 667 of the m9750?

I could get the full potential of the x7900 if i overclocked the 667 of the chipset as close to 800 as possible, this would in a sense overclock all of my system except the CPU which would be running at its normal intended settings. I'm not sure how well this would work since the m9750 runs kinda hot as it is.
I would be interested to hear from anyone who has overclocked the m9750 (chipset) FSB, how much did you safely increase it and what were your temps...
I think i will give this a try when i get home and post my results, I am also installing some new radeon crossfire hd 3870's and i'm just not knowledgable enough to know how and if overcloking the FSB will effect my GPU's.
lol, by the time i am done there may not be a computer left for the son. (be a good reason to give him the m17x and get me a new one) -

The T7600 is the best I have heard of for an M9750
If you are installing the 3870s anways, I would not try the x7900. It will run hotter and given that the heatsink for the cpu is shared with a GPU, it will have enough heat to handle as it is.
The T7600 and dual 3870s is the max for this system I believe. Don't worry though, that will still be a very capable system -
Well you might as well just give it a try with the x7900, it should boot at least, and tell us how far you are going.
I would try going up to 700 mhz but no more, thats 5% increase, looks reasonable... -
I just wanted to update this thread for anyone who reads it in the future. the x7900 will NOT work in the m9750, although it does physically fit into the socket, the mother board doesn't support it and does not boot.
Instead i bought a T7600G (unlocked), i bought 2gb of 800mhz ram so the ram temp won't be an issue if i decide to overclock the FSB , the T7600g has been reported to overclock stable to 2.8 with ease. ( intel advertises 3.3mhz )
the 800mhz ram, T7600G (clocked to 2.6~2.8), ATI HD mobility 3870's, and maybe some FSB overclocking should revive the m9750 to a pretty decent machine. i will post a new thread with results when i am done. -
wish i would have saw this sooner, i tried this on a freinds M9750, but it would even post.. we got 3.08ghz outta the T7600 though hes got the 7950gtx's its a pretty decent machine, so the 3870's should be a decent upgrade.

With a prorcessor running at that kind of speed and two 3870s on the same heatsink, good luck not having it burn up after a few months of use.
I would HIGHLY recommend using top performance thermal paste, and running it with the back off on a Cryo LX or simiarly good notebook cooler. If possible even get some RAM heatsinks and stick them on the heatsink for extra cooling. -

Why is it that nobody told the OP that the CPUs were not pin compatible.
And @ OP, all you had to do was download the datasheets from intel and you would have known that the x7900 would not work.
Also, I agree that you should overclock the FSB. You can get a higher clock speed if you lower the multi and increase the FSB. The CPU needs less voltage to be stable that way, and you will get better performance. -
I have a custom cooler that does an awesome job of keeping this rig cool. and i'm not going to get crazy with the overclocking, I will probably just increase the FSB by 100mhz or so ? The CPU only shares a heatsink with one of the 3870's. I use arctic silver 5 , is there a better paste ? and thats why u got 800mhz ram, its a 667mhz system and i doubt i will be overclocking the FSB more then 800mhz so the ram should be fine.
I don't know alot about overclocking, but i read that this is true, thats why i got the t7600g so i can actually change the multi. -

I think you should overclock the FSB by 30%.
Your CPU will handle more.
By the way, if your ram becomes unstable, flash it to a lower frequency and higher timings with thaiphoon burner. -
30% is alot, don't you think i would start having heating issues with the GPU's at that much even with a kickass cooler. -

Higher timings will let you overclock the ram more.
If you flash your ram to 533mhz, your FSB : DRAM ratio changes in your favor, also your ram will have more overclocking headroom so you can take the FSB higher.
If at 30% it's too hot, lower the multi. You want a high FSB and a low multi because that makes the CPU more stable, so you wont have to give it too much voltage (maybe undervolt a little), which makes the CPU cooler.
What processor can i put in my m9750
