    Here's a description of me:

I am not on the move very often. I want to have a laptop that I would be able to actually put on my lap. I go on vacation on occasion, for 3-7 days usually. I own and enjoy both consoles out right now. If I get a laptop, it's probably not going to be my main gaming device, but one that will be used often (a LOT of my time is spent gaming). I'm not sure if the m11x's screen is too small, so I will go to the store to check what it looks like in real life. Plus, my budget isn't the greatest (probably $900, I don't really want to wait any longer for a laptop, but if necessary...however, I heard I could haggle the M15X down a lot by phone call).

Which one should I get? Are the base specs of the M15X not worth it?

with that budget your only option is the M11x or maybe find a used M15x.

Yeah, with the amount of money you have a M11x is pretty much your only option. Wait a while, save up, and get a M15x.

From the sounds of it you want the M15X. Which is good, Because by the time you have the $ for it they will have better prices on all the newer CPU and GFX tech that is making its way into notebooks right now.

The M15x is only worth it if you can afford to get it with the GTX 260M. The M11x's 335M actually surpasses the 240M.

Also, if you're looking for true mobility, the M11x is the obvious choice. If you need battery, the M15x isn't going to serve you well with only two or so hours.

But basically, no, the M15x's base specs (i.e. the base graphics card) are not worth it. Unless you can go for the 260M, I'd go M11x. (I'd go M11x regardless, though. Just because I like it more.)

Get the M11x, you won't be dissapointed.. i think it'll be promoted to my main gaming system - AND i've got a powerful PC, xbox360, PS3, Wii, DS, PSP.... I guess i would have went for the m15x if i didn't already have a PC but this thing is great for what it is.

I suggest a M11x, unless you consider a 9 pound machine to be lap friendly. No need to option up the M11x either since most of the optional stuff can be found elsewhere for cheaper (software, HDD), adds little to no performance gains (CPU) or you can get away with not upgrading.

    M11x pro's:
    portable
    low cost
    lap friendly
    relatively fast
    superb battery
option to switch between main and intergrated GPU

    con's:
not as fast as the m15x, it isn't able to run everything on high/max
    small screen
    small keyboard
    no DVD or CD drive

    M15x pro's:
    very fast
    big screen
    big keyboard
    CD $ DVD drive
you can take it with you in a backpack

    con's:
    gets hot
    it's heavy
you can't play for more than 20 minutes unplugged
    more expensive

Both are fine machines. But for your available budget you should go for the M11x. That machine has a much better price / value level.

Most of the games are running without problems. I can even play Crysis on it. I have no problems with the 11" screen. It is sharp, good colors and games are looking good at native resolution.

On battery it runs six hours ... with WLAN for surfing in the Internet and small stuff like that.

On the other side my M15x is a real beast. Endless power and the best screen I have ever had! But it is a heavy Notebook and it size is more 17" than 15" ... a 17" Mac Book Pro looks small if you compare those two machines on a table.

If you don't move it ... no problem! But sitting on the couch with the M15x on your knees is no fun at all!

So you have to think how and where to use it!

I have both machines so I have the daily choice. :D
I from what I can say after one month: I use 70% of the time the M11x. ;)

    Sascha

if you have powerful desktop go for m11x..if not ..go for m15x

more than 1000$ for gaming laptop is a big mistake..desktop gaming rig is a better solution and cheaper..

Is it your main or second computer?

Main, I'd get the M15X. 2nd, M11X. Assuming both are withing your budget.

Firstly, well done for bumping a thread that's a few weeks old and now defunct. Please do NOT bump an old thread without good reason.

Secondly, considering you're claiming that buying a gaming laptop is a big mistake (considering nearly all of them are over $1000) in an Alienware forum, get ready to be very, VERY badly flamed.

You do know there are reasons people buy laptops over desktops. We all know that a gaming desktop would be cheaper and more powerful; do you think we just waste money on these laptops for no reason?

I needed a system that I could take on holiday, and occasionally use off-the-plug, the price was right for me and it performs as well as I need it to. So I bought the M17. And I haven't regretted it since.

    come on dudes..

one simple thing at your desktop with 500$ you can upgrade your gpu and play all the latest games with full graphic settings at high res..like 1920x1200 at big lcd,s or monitors

if your gaming laptop is more than 1 year old..you may have problems..and you can not upgrade..

    so the result?

you just killing that machine for a 500 $ to sell it and buy another brick for the limit of 2 years performance again..

*only at specific cases you need a lappy so powerful..if you travelling a lot..etc
**at your vacation m11x will be enough to enjoy your games for a few days..

    that is my personal opinion..

Well believe it or not, many of the users of this forum are 'specific cases'. Do you honestly think an average user-or even an average gamer-is going to shell out over $2000 on a gaming laptop?

I travel a lot. So I chose this laptop.

Plus, I'm happy with how it plays games.

There are a LOT of benefits to having the laptop instead of a desktop, and for some people those benefits outweigh the cost and lack of upgradability.

I never said it was wrong to go for the desktop route. None of us have. What we're saying is we've chosen to go for the laptop for a reason. No offense, but we don't need you trying to remind us of the extra cost we've paid, we know that already.

well, it is notebookreview.com otherwise we'd be posting on desktopreview.com. Speaking for myself I don't like to be anchored down to a single location. Especially since I often travel for weeks or months to remote locations.

ok..for me the meaning of "gaming" is to sit to my chair having high speed dsl..and playing my favorite fps online..all the others modes are just boring
i dont know if you can do this travelling allround....because i tried..with no lack

so i spent 2000$ before 1.5 year for a desktop replacement dell xps m1730...and i sold it for 900$..even with 9800sli...i had problems playing new games at all high and no frames drop below 60..

    total loss of money..

if at the future give us the option to upgrade the gaming laptops like the desktops..yeap i will be thinking about it..to buy a high end gaming lappy again

sorry mods for the off topic

same with buying a new car... you buy it for 20 grand, drive it off the lot and it depreciates 2-3 grand right there.. keep it for another year and there goes another 1-2 grand... it's just how things work.. i bought a gaming laptop asus g1s for 1300 or so had it for a good 2 years or so and resold it for 600? that's what you pay for new tech. Just depends on if you really have to have it right then and there.. If not wait a couple months it'll come down.

But i agree, sucks that laptops can't be easily upgraded, at least most such as the m11x..

    I had a gateway p173fx before I got my m11x. I think I paid $1200 for it? sold for around $900.
