I laughed at 16GB RAM. I wonder what kind of 15" laptop you're thinking of.
Oh, and I haven't so far seen a 15" system with a GTX 280M, highest I've seen is a 260M (in the M15x), and even the fastest i7 quad is 'only' 2GHz.
The point still stands that this is the most powerful laptop in the world with a screen size of less than 15".
And it's a good deal cheaper than those ultra-powerful 15" systems. The closest you're likely to get with a 15" for the same price is an i7-720 (1.6GHz) with a GT 240M, if you're lucky.
You're in luck then, seeming as LoTRO is about as CPU-reliant as Internet Explorer. Funny that it's one of the only games I can play that doesn't ramp up my CPU fan to at least audible levels. (Apart from CSS, but well...that's not exactly as good looking)

The SU7300 is more than capable to run pretty much anything you can throw at it, especially considering the reasonably powerful GPU and low native resolution of the screen. Just because the machine doesn't have top end components doesn't mean it will only be able to run minesweeper. It has mid-range components for a 14" laptop, but in a much more compact package. In years past any time you put the same guts in a smaller package it was a lot more expensive.
I guess you need an i9 with GTX 485m SLI for $600 to make people happy. -
While it may have the most "powerful" graphics card in it looking at 15' and under it is most certainly not the most powerful machine.
My Sony CW 14' laptop will wipe the floor with the mx11 as the CW has a full powered Core i5-520 in it and a nvidia 330m. While there may be instances where you get equal (or slightly better fps) in some games that are not cpu bound in general the CW is going to be much much faster than the mx11.
Im still eagerly awaiting the I7 refresh so I can justify buying one of these little puppies. I dont mind waiting since there isnt anything I will need this sucker for until FFXIV, Diablo III, and SWTOR comes out for PC. -
And and i7 will probably bump the cost up $200.
-
etc etc
Just let me play Empire total war on a setting where I can see the crows in the leafy trees squawk in surprise as a musket ball zings past leaving a wisp of smoke in its trail...ahhh days of gaming bliss only exist in my dreams at the moment...and on the ps3, but no ETW on that,,,. -
I'll be playing Mass Effect, Torchlight, Modern Warfare 2, and Bad Company 2.
-
I actually bought that one from Best Buy; but returned it when I ordered the M11X. -
I mean, it's basically 1/2 of a T9600. I can handle that.
-
Yes I was specifically thinking of the Clevo W860CU (Sager NP8690) when mentioning a 15" with Quad core i7 and GTX280. though I mis-spoke when I said 16Gb RAM. I have yet to find it configured with 16Gb
regardless, I think we can all agree this is a very powerful machine for its form factor and is without a doubt the most powerful notebook under 13" and at least on par with 13" and most 14" notebooks.
for those who say the screen is too small and not enough realestate, I wonder what resolution your screens are? a very common screen res for systems under 15" (and some 15") is 1366x768. you have the same number of pixels if its 15" diagonal or 11". you dont gain any space. in fact the smaller the screen, the sharper the image will apear.
I guess we are pretty much all barking up the same tree -
left 4 dead, command and conquer 3, call of duty 4, street fighter 4, mass effect 2, counter strike source, and Big Rigs Off Road Racing

Sims and leasure suit Larry

the 1.3 duelcore is a worrie but if it can just get it across the line this could be a perfectly balanced sistem.
alot of people make big calls about what they think their bottleneck is and some times perspective is lost..
mabye its a well balanced sistem with a = bottleneck on gpu/cpu..
im intersted in seeing how world of warcraft runs in a 25main raiding enviroment.. and how SC2 will run on this..
every thing els im not fussed about the Source engine has finaly lost my apeal and i now hear than Episode 3 has been canned for HL3 and a new software base so very possiblity L4D2 is the last source engine game. -
I can guarantee SC2 will NOT be a problem. LOL. Blizzard's games usually run maxed on 3 year old hardware at launch.

Some old favorites: UT2K4, HL Collection, Tribes 2, Deus Ex, Supreme Commander, RCT3, WoW
Some new favorites: Mass Effect 2, Fallout 3, Crysis, Dragon Age, and looking for that next 100hr plus addiction game!
Honestly though, I'm going to be using this mostly for electronic medical records. I work in psychiatry so I thoght the alien head logo was an appropriate stressor for the patients. It's like "No I don't see a glowing alien head, are YOU seeing that?" -

"6100 3Dmark06 is extremely weak" Well, I guess all those people who are casual gamers using notebooks that get 3DMark06 scores between 2,000 and 4,000 must be stuck playing solitaire and minesweeper.
Come on. Let's be serious for a moment here. Yes, you won't be playing Crysis at 1080p resolution with detail settings on high at 100fps ... but that's not what the M11x was built for. Alienware/Dell had a very simple goal in mind: Build an ultraportable notebook that still has enough GPU power to play games at native screen resolution on the road.
I've personally seen pre-production M11x systems (with beta drivers that should provide less performance than what ships to consumers) running CoD MW2, Star Trek Online, Dirt2, and Left 4 Dead 2 at solid frame rates (25+ fps) at 1366x768. No, detail wasn't always set to high and AA was off, but even the entry-level config of the M11x "should" be able to handle gaming with modern games while on the road.
I'll still be using my home-built gaming desktop for serious gaming at home and I certainly don't plan to do HD video editing on this machine, but when I've got some free time on a business trip or I'm on a vacation then the M11x should keep me entertained.
I'll reserve my final judgment until we get a review unit in house, but there is every reason to believe this ultraportable notebook can handle more than "older games." -
I like lotro, and i was going to order the new dell alienware m11x but have never played this game without a mouse on a notebook? anyone here like playing on a laptop in bed? I imaging it would be very hard to do?
wife may not like it either. heheheh.
another thing will the m11x have bt?
why not wait for the ion2 next month? -
the most hardware intensive game i will be playing will probably be street fighter 4. i will use the machine for on the go hd content, school work, and most likely some doujin game from time to time lol.
i just really like this because the size is exactly what i like and its pretty power for its size. and also i think the laptop just looks really cool -
-
Mass Effect 2, Bioshock 2, whatever's on steam. Supposedly this laptop can run Crysis, so I'm going to use a friend's copy to see if it will do just that. Hopefully I get invited into the Final Fantasy XIV Beta, so I can t start playing that! Right now I have zero room for a desktop, and I really don't have (or am willing) to spend big money on getting a high spec'd noteook, so the m11x will do for me.
The bigger problem is how will games be played that require the CD like say Crysis? -
I want to play FSX, how smooth will it run and which settings should I run it on?
-
does bioshock work well??
-
Games I have ready to be installed and played on the M11X are Crysis, Crysis Warhead, Borderlands, Dirt 2, Need For Speed Shift, S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Tom Clancy Hawx, ME2, L4D2, DMC4, RE5, World in Conflict, Operation Flash Point. Front lines, MW2, Assasins Creed, Fear 1 and 2, Quake Wars, and Venetica.
-
Heroes of Newerth.
TF2
cs
SC2?!
lol
maybe MW2.. maybe.. -
Why am I buying the m11x? I travel alot, long haul, UK -> US and usually every movie on the plane I've already seen!
I need: Portability, power and the ability to use airline power! or large battery option.
I've been trying to find a laptop that can game decently, started off focused on something that could play RTS decent as I thought no chance with FPS etc.
I started with the Dell XPS M1330. Which would play CoH at full res but low settings. it was ok. Looked for another machine as the XPS wasn't quite up to it, but would last a whole flight and was happy on airline power.
Couldn't really find anything better for a long time until I got a Clevo 8882 which was awesome if a little heavy, but battery life sucked and the screen quality was so so the machine worked well and if I unplugged the battery it would run on airline power.
Upgraded to the Clevo 860 which is phenomanal laptop i7-820 absolutely amazing screen (one of the best and at FullHD). But its big, battery life is non-existant and it won't run on airline power at all.
So M11x I think will give me what I need and a little more.
I want to try and play Batman, CoH, CC3, DoW2, Star Trek Online, CoD:MW1+2. Left4Dead etc. As long as it plays CoH and DoW2 well I'll be happy though.
My only concern with the machine is no DVD drive and hoping that games will work ok without one. Am a bit disappointed that no real game benchmarks have been posted. I was waiting to see them before I ordered but thought fack it and pulled the trigger yesterday.
Cheers,
Neil.

I'll be playing a lot of games on my m11x since i've really neglected PC Gamer since I got a PS3.
Age Of Mythology, Age Of Empires 3, Doom 3, Quake 4, STALKER, Crysis, Left 4 Dead 1+2, Mass Effect 2, Modern Warfare 2, Warcraft 3, Dawn Of War 1+2, Dragon Age: Origins, Quake Wars... Pretty much anything decent. Plus tons of older games.
Can you get noCD patches for pretty much all games? -
yes but you get stupidness like I think it was Batman that you'd be playing and it all looked fine but it had detected a "illeagal patch" and all of a sudden you'd get killed alot easier. Just hoping to avoid that pain.
Can you play steam games when you are not online? -
Yeah Steam games can be played offline.
Ah thats good, most of the games I have on disc aren't that recent anyway so they should be fine. I think the most recent is Age Of Mythology, been a while since i've purchased a physical copy of a PC game! -
I bought one just for when I travel, got it cheap thanks to staff price
-
Im buying M11x, and since i'm no computer geek (yet), I thought i'd ask you about what you think of it. Here are the specs:
Intel Core 2 Duo Su7300
8 GB RAM
500 GB HDD -
-
World of Warcraft
Torchlight
Dragon Age Origins
Counter Strike Source
Left 4 Dead
I have like 60 games on Steam so I don't know but mostly those 5... when I need study breaks at a coffee shop or something -
Starcraft 2
Diablo 3
Heroes of Newerth
...and a crappy old-school mmo -
1. MAME
2. NUllDC
3. PSX
4. PCSX2
5. UT / UT 2004
6. Killing Floor
7. A bunch of THQ games (Got the $50 steam special for 20 THQ games last weekend)
8. Flash games. I saved a bunch that I use on my N900, plus online ones too
-
I think I'll start with Mass Effect for offline; and Guild Wars/Bad Company 2 for online.
-
My games at first will be:
WoW
Torchlight
Mass Effect 1
Mass Effect 2
Borderlands
Bioshock 1
and Crayon Physics -
CS:S
Borderlands
World of Warcraft
Diablo 3
Starcraft 2 -
-
did anyone try out bioshock 2 or 1 ????
does it play well??? -
-
Yes and normally Dell put these in even if you didn't select the option, and all you need is the 3G mPCI card and you are all set. I'll be testing this the day my machine comes.
Even if they haven't put the aeriel in you can install the aeriel yourself also, its not difficult I did this on my MSI Wind.

-
would be great thanks mate ..but do you also think it will run on med. settings smoothly??
-
Bioshock, as well as many other UE3 games, I'd think would be perfectly playable. Maybe not at max settings / AA, but certainly playable with a bit of tweaking.
I can't think of many games that this should have too much trouble with, if you're willing to lower the graphical settings.
The problem with PCSX2 is that it is very CPU dependant, and it needs a lot of raw power. -
I'm hoping to buy one (eventually) as a super-portable solution to 3d modelling on the road... need to figure out if it's actually good enough first - though I have heard of netbooks being able to run 3ds max and maya
-
my current laptop is acer 5920 g.
specs: intel 2 duo processor t7300 8600 gt geforde and 2 gb ddr2
do you think i will game better on the m11x than with the 5920g even the acer laptop has got mor ghz for the cpu?????? -
I have played COD MW2, N4S shift and DAOrigin on it. All perfectly playable

I don't have Bioshock 2, so I just benched my copy of Bioshock through a playthrough of ~15 minutes:
1366 x 768, all settings maxed:
Min FPS: 15, Average: 53, Max: 80
Game was very smooth and sharp.
Unfortunately I've got a busy day ahead of me, otherwise I'd bench Dragon Age Origins and a variety of other games such as Empire Total War, COD MW2, etc. -
Just picked up RE5 from a buddy
What will you be playing on the M11x exactly?
