I'm looking to get an external cooler for my Whitebook/M17.

Right now I'm looking at the NZXT CRYO, but wanted to get some input or first hand recommendations from you folks before I take the plunge.

    Thanks y'all!

It looks great! But I don't like the color ... may be this is a "beta version" :)

The NZXT Cryo LX would be your best bet. Unless that concept cooler comes out as expected during Q1 2009.

yeah i was looking for a cooler too...to keep the cpu temp down lower...will the NZXT Cryo LX vents line up with the vents under the m17? and will the fans blow out under or blow in? i wanna make sure the flow is correct on this specific cooler

I found that the Zalman has its fans twords the bottom of the cooler and the fans on our laptops are more twords the top so the cooling wouldn't be that great. I have the Rosewill 17inch and that works like a charm

I use the NZXT Cryo too. Thing is, the original fans don't do much, especially if you have the filter fibers on the bottom cover blocking the vents. Nonetheless, the great thing about the Cryo aside from the fact that it comes with a useful USB hub is that the original fans are standard 120mm and they're three of them. I already swapped out the original ones with Aerocool Turbines which have more air-flow.

hmmm so which is the best...i havent seen any proof in these lowering the temps of cpu and gpu significantly....and there is no way im swapping out fans after paying 60 bucks for the NZXT Cryo LX

I actually looked at cooling pads and learned the difference from laying it on a table and a top of the line cooler is...well a couple of degrees =/.

Maybe I'm overestimating the usefulness here. I had an older Asus G2S series - you know, the ones with the overheating issue? :( So the difference between cooler and no cooler was an average of one heat shutdown a day with the cooler, vs. several without.

From what I'm hearing, though,l the coolers are nice and will cool the M17 (and I'm getting one anyway!) but it's not the requirement that it was for my old rig...

...which is nice. I've been agonizing over finding the 'perfect' cooler, but if it's not as critical a component as I thought, that'll take some pressure off the decision...

I bought the NC2000 from Zalman.
At first I thought it would help...i mean the Laptop is sitting just perfect on there, very comfortble for writing and gaming etc.
But after taking a closer look it does not really help that much for the temps, expept when I place it really low and remove the backplane.
Does the NXZT Cryo perform better? Is it worth spending 70€ on it? (BTW: I need a USB Hub anyway)
Another question regarding the cryo...as far as I know it is possible to use an external power supply...does anyone know if there are any specifications besides 5V ? Can I just buy a random one that fits?

today will arrive my nzxt cryo. I'll made a little review and temps comparisons.
EDIT: just used my luch break to test it quickly. I'm not impressed. maybe a 2 °C drop. It's definitely fondamental to mod the bottom cover.

The Cryo is pretty much the best thing out there right now for an M17. The Zalmans vents are at the bottom so no help there.

The temp drop is going to depend a lot on the ambient temps of your environment with a lappy cooler. So just keep that in mind; that said my M17 and my friends old Aurora lappy do run several degrees cooler more often than not with the Cryo.

The fans on the Cryo are interchangeable (which I love) with other fans if you so wish for a mere $10.

    @HaloGod2007
Changing the fan flow (in or away) is very easy, all you need is a screwdriver.

    Hope that helps.

The cryo drops my temps by about 8 degrees on GPU at load, Im tempted to try with some of the Scythe Jyuni fans I have in my old desktop; but Im worried if I do then I'll end up back to square one on noise!

Down side of the Cryo is the M17 doesnt sit 100% on it; and unfortunately it sort of slips over several hours of use, as theres no where that locks well; well not without only putting it about half on the cooler.

I have the Cryo and like it very much. The Zalman has the fans on the bottom and seem to be somewhat worthless. If anything I just prop up the back an inch or two

Do you have the same issues with your M17 'slipping off' Frozen? If so what did you find the best way to deal with it, without affecting the cooling?

Yeah they slip off a little so I put some bigger rubber mounts that prevented them from slipping. I found them in our maintence department here at work but I'm sure they are at Fred Meyers or Lowes. I used it to oc my X9100 and I was able to get 3.53 for benchies.

My M17 is a pain to get to sit "just right" on my Cryo but once I get it there it doesn't move on me unless I bump it with a decent pit of force. As for me, every little degree helps considering how the heat can be here. The other day one of our A/C's (We have 3) went out and it was 110F in my office until nightfall.

I just ordered the cryo...in a few days I will be able to compare it to the NC2000. I hope it was worth the money...

It is (to me anyway) worth the money. Especially since the Zalman will do very little for a M17 (due to intake placement).

Forgot to mention in my last post to try Undervolting if you haven't already, it's an awesome way to reduce temps with absolutely no drawbacks whatsoever.

Check flipfire's Undervolting guide in the Hardware Components and Aftermarket Upgrade's thread. Super easy and on average you'll see 10c reduction or more if your lucky. (I went from 71c to 60c max stress w/o Cryo or any other mods).

Whizzo reviewed the Zalman NC2000 a while ago, but with the m15x. It can be found here.
