i think it is the GA implementation that takes time on the bigger laptops to get right
because all upcoming AW will have it just check their facebook
Theres one guy who wanted it on "other" laptops and got this answer from Alienware
"That may be a possibility down the line. For now this is exclusive to the Alienware 13 and all future Alienware notebooks."

i will jump ship to ASUS this time around

Read carefully about every aspect of ownership and user experience before you do... a lot of people complain about Dellienware then come back after a round or two of another vendor once they realize how poorly designed, built and maintained systems are from other vendors in comparison despite the reviews and glamour shots of the systems; there are frequently good reasons why Dell doesn't rush things and is more conservative on releases.

I think we all need to take a step back and wait. We've all clearly gotten ahead of ourselves. And yes, that includes me...

Dell is a private company now. They don't have to bend over for shareholders anymore. This means they can take as long as they wish. I'm sure there's a logical explanation for them taking such a long time. And the fact of the matter is: none of us will come to know that reason until they officially launch. Thus, we wait.

Don't get ahead of yourself with your expectations now. I've been waiting a year now and nothing but disappointing news so far. At this point I'm quite certain alienware will NOT offer the 900M series until lower tier GPU's are being offered. Who knows perhaps they are planning to go back to AMD. I dunno but have lost my interest. Like I said I have waited MORE than enough for the release of a single laptop which has now disappeared.

I can tell you a gazillion reasons why GT72 is better than AW17. AW17 does have its pro's too, I agree with that, but is certainly not alone there on the top.

    "Dell doesn't rush things"

June 2nd 2012: The first high end mobile Kepler chip was announced from Nvidia.
June 5th 2012: Alienware issued out press release showing M17x and M18x featuring these and orders for the notebooks on the website have effectively begun.

October 7th 2014: The first high end mobile Maxwell chip was announced from Nvidia
November 2nd 2014: No notebook announcement from Alienware with Maxwell. Zero words even from the reps working for Alienware about approx ETA. Rumors about cutting away some notebook from their offering. Zero clarification from Alienware.

A vastly different Dell today than in 2012. Almost like they are downprioritizing Alienware notebooks after going private.
Dell, private or not, need to satisfy customers. We are the reason why they even can exist. They are doing the opposite at the moment, pissing customers off.
They may very well have reasons, but it all boils down to communication, which have effectively shut down on their part. And that will and have already began to damage their reputation.

Am I the only person here has absolutely zero interest in a gaming laptop that is not 18". I give people credit for gaming on a 15" or less because I surely can't do it. And as far as a 17", that is what I browse and use as my main computer. The 18" screen makes gaming possible for me, anything less and I would rather get a desktop. Let's be honest, most of us don't move these 18 inch "laptops" around much anyway. The draw is the screen size and then the SLI. I'm not going to buy a laptop that I feel I need to plug into an external monitor anyway just to play games and enjoy the power the machine has. At this point, I'm less worried about the new GPU's coming as I am about the future of the AW18 itself. Dell, may not only end my relationship with them if they discontinue the AW18, but they may also put an end to my gaming laptop days all together. I think someone should start a suit against Dell for Alienware abuse and remove them for Dell's custody. :)

Never said they were alone with quality products, only that you better do your homework on what to expect as you step out to vendors you don't yet really know.

On the point of communication, I agree 100% that they should do more; the 2014 "kickoff" was a joke. I'm just saying why they don't release at the same rate, and that the majority (IMHO) of other vendors don't as consistently offer a quality product backed up by support and warranty coverage that Dell does. Size creates slowness but it does have it's payoffs as well.

What Dell should do is read the forums, go back to its roots and have one rep inform us that AW will have the 17, 18 model with 900m series plus no soldered CPU crap. What is this? PS3 console? LOL!!!

The M series was a great hit. The features, upgradabilty factor, customizable on site & even the speed of release was fast enough plus the quality of plastic was also good. Now the slow release cycle with that overloaded eGPU crap and this silence...very disappointing.

That would - if Dell paid any heed to these forums - satisfy the enthusiast portion of the Alienware market, but there are millions more Alienware customers that do NOT frequent these forums and WILL buy any trash that Dell churn out BECAUSE it is ALIENWARE........those less educated than those who frequent these forums on Alienware and high end gaming laptops WILL be the bread and butter market for the majority of Alienware computers sales - those people who will buy, simply because of the association of performance with Alienware will do so in droves, but little do they know of the backwards, crazy thinking that is leading to some rather obscure decisions on how Dell and Alienware is going these days. They will be happy in their own little ignorant world, confident (mistakenly so) that they have a powerhouse, uber-machine.......you know what they say, right? - ignorance is bliss......and Dell can cash in on that without having to push hard to satisfy the probable very small percentile of it's client base on these forums that actually do give a damn about performance.

For those of us who KNOW what performance actually means, it's a different story. I imagine many people with vote with their wallets this time around until Dell/Alienware actually pump out something that would satisfy the enthusiast market....they have not done that in quite a while, IMHO.........

Whilst I'm sure they DO read these various threads etc, they simply don't give a rats butt about providing the enthusiast with what they want - they are happy to settle for mediocrity and sell it in droves to sheep.

Like I said before, I'll upgrade my AW 18 to 980m sli once it works and 780m sli to m18x r2 and go from there. If after 5 years they offer bga products, ill just go Clevo.

As i said before AW will release 980m with soldered CPU. Alienware got very large market, company is just runnin on brand name and of course got outstandin design. Unfortunately soldered CPU MB price will be sky high.

Soldered chips will be a reality which everyone will have to accept at some point or other, people can delay it for few years by changing brands but 2-3 years down the line you won't have any choice. What can any laptop brand do when intel will sell them only BGA products for laptops??

Well, that's what everyone says. If that is true, I view it as being a good enough reason to stop trying. I know I'm not going to buy anything with a BGA CPU or GPU. If a lot of Alienware customers feel that way and Alienware knows it, they might as well just fold up the laptop operation right now because they won't have anything from Intel that is worth burning any calories on selling.

Switch to desktop... looks like Alienware did. Ask yourself why and maybe your comment is the explanation we are looking for. We cannot tell Intel how to run their business, but maybe we can run them out of business (or knock some sense into their stupid thick skulls) by not purchasing their mobile CPU trash.

Just to be fair to Porras -- you really need to understand how binding some of these NDAs can be in industry. I myself work for a pharmaceutical, and the NDAs I had to sign when I joined was a good 5 sheets of paper. To put that in perspective, my entire offer package consisted of 10 sheets of paper.

Yep exactly. NBR tends to skew our perspectives, but when you take a step back you realize for every one of us that actually cares about real performance and upgradeability, there's 10 more that don't, and buy Alienware because OMG ALIENZ N LIGHTZ GAIZ.

Yes you're probably right, they will become a reality like it or not. The only thing we can do is vote with our wallet and boycott Intel's BGA crap. And if you've been paying attention to the shenanigans that Intel has been up to, they actually wanted to push BGA to desktops as well.

I've said this at least 3 times already, but the day Intel makes desktop chips BGA only is the day I go AMD and never look back, performance et al be damned. Sometimes you do things out of principle, even if it's not the most logically sound.

Yeah, I agree... we can't expect Brother Porras to jeopardize his livelihood just to feed our frantic need to know what tomorrow brings. That would be an unreasonable expectation for us to have of him. Also consider that he may not be on a need-to-know basis as a member of the social media team. He has to do what is expected of him to feed his family, and to avoid mishaps it would be prudent for the Dell/Alienware employees in social media to have no access to information they do not want to be shared with the general public. It is hard to let something slip if you're kept in the dark on purpose. As they say, "Loose lips sink ships." Better safe than sorry... good for Dell/Alienware and good for our friends like Mr. Porras to not get fired.

I would go AMD in a socket before I would stay with Intel and let them own me through BGA filth. And, that's definitely out of principle because AMD CPUs absolutely suck. As long as the Extreme CPU and K series are in a socket, I probably won't be willing to drop my performance standards that low to make a statement they won't listen to. It would be an equally effective message for all of the sales of BGA processors to dry up and blow away with X, K and mobile Extreme continuing to flourish.

No point in having a hot-running, power-sucking AMD desktop CPU that runs on par with a low-TDP Intel Ultrabook CPU running with half as many cores at a lower clock speed. For every customer they lose, I'm sure they'll just jack the price a little to make the same amount of money off of those that are left to leech from.

You know I wonder whether Intel has considered the fact that if they keep dragging their feet, enthusiasts will simply stop upgrading. Sure there's always going to be that 1% within the 1% that constantly buys the latest and greatest, but for those who don't have that upgrade itch and can see through Intel's BS, there's not much incentive to upgrade these days.

I mean the Nehalem era 980X is 4.5 years old and getting a bit long in the tooth sure, but it's far from obsolete, and still spanks the living crap out of the 4770K with its 2 extra cores. And keep in mind those 4.5 years were still relatively "good" years because Intel cared enough to at least try. Now that Intel isn't even trying, I can foresee someone like me with the 4930K should be able to hold out for at least another 5 years. And for someone rocking the 5960X right now, I think they're pretty much set for the next 10 years lol.

I guess Intel may not care at all because the enthusiast segment still only makes up maybe <5% of their revenue.

NDAs are serious, I interned at a pharmaceutical production company and by god they sounded like they would personally execute me if I slipped anything. Its not fair to expect confidential information out of Porras. You can't stake our speculation, rumor mill and general disgruntled status with Alienware against a man's livelihood.

Sandy bridge quad cores should be good for another 4 years easily. I think Intel vastly underestimated the strength of their CPU architecture, and are slowing things down to avoid hitting the roof too fast (Moore's Law)

I didn't mean Porras should jeopardize his position at Alienware. I only use his name because he is the only AW rep here I know of. I meant Alienware should
    A) Clarify if certain models are discontinued
    B) Get the preorder for the notebooks with 900M chips running on their site.
    C) Give out approx ETA when they start to ship these notebooks. If not a date, then try to pin down which period (ie This month, Next month, Next year etc).

Porras as an employee of Alienware that works with customer service have an obligation to tell the higher ups about the negative talks that surrounds this thread and the big confusion if he can't talk about it. He should try to get an approval of at least answering some of the points above.

Maybe I'm asking too much, I really don't think I do because like mentioned earlier, all other OEMs have clarified the launch of their notebooks which haven't shipped out yet. Preorders sites are up at resellers, ETA is there, information about hardware too, the companies have made announcements to the press a long time ago.
Alienware have done absolutely nothing of this. That's what dissappoints me.

That they ignore this thread makes me sadly to believe we are just a tiny part of their total sales for the Alienware notebooks like steviejones explains. Or maybe its because of the downsizing in Alienware since they went private. Or maybe they are changing the structure with focusing more on fewer notebooks like AW13 and GPU box plus the AW17, Alpha console and the Area51 desktop which is why AW18 may dissappear. Maybe all above combined.

I don't know. All I know is that I have top 1 week more before my patience with Alienware have run out.

Cloudfire, I understand your frustration, but that's just not how things work in the corporate world. I personally know of a few big companies in my field that likes to compartmentalize and segregate everything, to the detriment of productivity sometimes. There are stories of people being told "that's not your job" and "why are you talking to this department". For all we know brother Porras may not even have a direct line of contact to the CS department, and you're vastly overestimating how much he could do as an individual employee. Plus as brother Fox mentioned, he could be on a need-to-know basis, and right now Dell has decided that he doesn't need to know.

lol that's a bit extreme. Mine was long because it spelled out in very clear detail what I was not allowed to divulge and for how long, since as a bench chemist I have access to some of the most important (and high guarded) information available.

Now that's just gross laziness on Intel's part. If you know a potential ceiling is nearing you double down and find ways around it, or invest more into R&D and discover something else. What you don't do is halt your own progress to delay the inevitable. It's very similar to drug discovery actually. If pharmaceuticals simply rested on their laurels we'd all be worse off. Incidentally, that is what's happening in my field actually, which is why you hear stories about big players laying people off left right and center. Only those who bothered to invest in a sustainable R&D program came out relatively unscathed. All others who joined the race to pick the low(est) hanging fruits are now reeling from the effects of their strategic missteps as their patents start to expire, and pipelines start to run dry.

We cannot expect for any news to be passed on to us, via any AW rep on this forum, that Dell as a global do not want to be passed on. Wether that be discontinuations, product specifications etc etc - the world just doesn't work that way when it comes to big business - they tell YOU on a NEED TO KNOW basis, not the other way around. I do however agree with cloudfire in saying that things could (and maybe should) have been handled better in that sense, but in the same breath I do not expect any of that kind of news to be forthcoming - wether it be from Brother Luis or anyone else from Dell posting on these forums.

As for Intel and their BS, well......if you don't have much in the way of competition, why try harder if you can make the same amount of money............I know I wouldn't work an 80hr week if I could get the same results from a 30hr week.

I wonder what Mr. Moore himself thinks of what Intel is doing these days. He hasn't been super involved in day to day operations at intel for years now, but I believe he is still a chairman of some sort, and even at age 85, he still keeps up with current technology. Maybe someone should write him a letter.

Judging by the howls here it appears many people didn't understand this and the impact on Dell...this is fairly well known if you check around and is why Dell, a major desktop supplier is trying to re-orient their lineup. To satisfy the market desire for greater mobility and provide a bit more future proofing, I think they settled on the Graphics Accelerator concept to help create some sense of upgrade-ability.

I have to say I find it rather humorous that people are acting like people buy Alienware due to the styling alone if they aren't uber-enthusiasts... if you don't think this is also a factor in MSI, Asus, Nvidia, etc purchases. you need to listen to the people who buy them. If anything, I laud the AW purchasers for at least having the sense to not jump on the half-baked (literally) ultrabook designs those manufacturers are pimping; that shows a real lack of understanding outside of staring at a raw spec sheet that doesn't tell the whole tale. Otherwise you are just spouting the same cool-aid those vendor's fans spew constantly while complaining about how loud the fans are on their lap-toasters.

A lot of folks buy Dell because they prefer dealing with them and have had a long history either at work or privately; it's a good bit deeper than "blinky lights OMG" for many folks that stay with the line that aren't pure enthusiasts. I see and hear every bit the same unthinking trend of folks buying ROG because some "gamer" told them it was the best, or MSI these days with no understanding qualitatively of the pros and cons of those vendor's products.

Now, do I believe Dell is starting to pull back performance for price even more to their detriment, yes, but to say that everyone who isn't tearing down their machine to tick a benchmark up 3 pts. makes up the rest of the non-enthusiast sales is just impressed by styling is a bit over the top.

A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. So a computer with a soldered processor can only go for so long no matter if you can upgrade the gpu for 5 or 6 years.

Maybe it's their way of telling us to "get some real soldering skillz" and invest in a reballing station

They (Dell) could have done the upgrade-ability side of things by making their Alienware laptops more upgradeable - instead, they have chosen some BGA crud and adopted the 'thin and light' mentality which means you cannot get an MXM card inside a thin and light machine. Whilst I can see that the GA eGPU allows for better performance for laptops (AW13 for example) with a soldered on P.O.S gpu & cpu, it still detracts from the fact that to get performance out of your PORTABLE Alienware gaming laptop, you need to chain it to a desk. How ludicrous is that?? - if I wanted a desktop, I'd get a desktop.

I maintain that they (Dell) should not try and play 'devil's advocate' within what is supposedly their performance notebook market. Their customers from within that segment want two things - performance and portability. When there are other manufacturers out there offering better performance coupled with portability, machines like the 13 are gonna be an EPIC fail.

If Dell want to concentrate on their desktop line up, let them mess about with their run-of-the-mill desktop machines - what they should not do is to try and feck about with their performance gaming division to try and make it mainstream - Alienware was never meant to be mainstream as it is supposedly all about performance and enthusiasts, and their laptops were supposedly about performance and portability. Seems nowadays to get performance AND portability out of your Alienware notebook, Dell want you to strap your portable machine to an eGPU close to the size of a mITX because they couldn't be arsed doing the job right to start with...

The only thing Dell has announced to the media, this promo for their exquisite overclocking and cooling solution .. Alienware Unleashes the Full-Potential of Intel’s Core i7 Laptop Processors

    Oct 9, 2014 |  9 comments

Alienware announced that all Intel Core i7 equipped Alienware 17 and Alienware 18 performance gaming laptops will ship with a factory overclock, increasing the power and unleashing the full potential of Intel’s potent Core i7 processors. Already leaders in mobile gaming, the Alienware 17 and Alienware 18 laptops feature an uncompromising approach to performance and the newly overclocked processors push the hardware faster than ever before, giving gamers ultimate processing power whether they need higher FPS when fragging or extra fidelity when streaming to their subscribers.

    1.PNG

Keeping your components cool under full load, all Alienware laptops feature full-throttle thermals that utilize copper D6 heat pipes that pull thermal energy away from the processor and blow it out from the back of the system through copper fins for maximum cooling efficiency. This highly efficient cooling system enables the overclocked Intel Core i7’s to run at maximum performance without throttling or overheating. All of that extra speed requires an adequate AC adapter that can fuel that much power, and Alienware’s power adapters are more than up to the task, providing clean power with more than enough juice to drive even the most intense gaming sessions without compromise.

“We always prioritize performance first and foremost with every product that we develop.” Said Frank Azor, General Manager of Alienware. “Our engineers worked hard to optimize every last ounce of performance without sacrificing the quality and stability that users expect from every Alienware product.”
http://na.alienwarearena.com/news/a...otential-of-intel-s-core-i7-laptop-processors Why they came with this now, when they know every other PC manufacturers announced that their gaming laptops come with Gtx980m?

Man, talk about the pot calling the kettle black, LOL. Everything he insinuates to be "not OK" describes Apple's modus operandi to a tee.

But, irony aside... yup, I get it. There is absolutely some truth to what he is saying, and it does apply to the sorry state of affairs we find ourselves in right now. His problem was that he didn't walk the talk. He always presumed to know best and decided for everyone. It was always his way, what he wanted, or not at all. Want Mac OS on non-Mac hardware? Pound sand. (Yes, it can be hacked... most things can.) Want to upgrade your Mac with the latest and greatest high performance hardware that makes the PC fans as giddy as school kids? Tough [ insert rhyming slang for pectorals] said the kitty. Stalin, Hitler, Mussolini, Jobs all had something in common... they were legends in their own minds. The only people that really agreed with them were the apostles and disciples of their respective cults. They abused their power and their delusions of grandeur for their evil empires never came to fruition.

Now it's monkey see, monkey do. Based on their behavior, Micro$haft and Intel seem to view themselves as invincible and infallible. It sort of worked for Apple and the Jobs-lovers, as long as you were careful to overlook the fact that the company have been dwarfed by Micro$haft for decades. Unfortunately, Micro$haft and Intel have gone down the same slippery slope of not listening or caring what customers want and insisting upon giving them what they feel is in the best interests of their cash-generating corporate machines.

For the first time ever, Apple is finally starting to present a real and present threat to Micro$haft. The more Micro$lop chooses to not pay attention, the less unattractive Apple products become to consumers that are having a harder time identifying anything compelling about being a Micro$oft customer or using Windows. The lines are blurrier than they ever have been, customers feel alienated and there is less of a compelling reason to choose Micro$lop products than there ever has been in the past. Apple isn't getting better, but their nemesis is getting worse. ChromeOS and Android are riding the same wave.

Connect the dots Redmond... Intel, you're next, bubba. People that are technical noobs that don't know how and have never cared about upgrading or servicing their computers are going to bow their necks against filth like BGA, hardware and software certification, software and firmware signatures and Secure Boot. Why? Because they can, and they don't like being told they can't, even if they don't want to. Phase one is consumers slowing waking up and recognizing they are being controlled, manipulated, dictated to, and lied to.

I honestly think you overestimate the average age of Alienware's primary buyers. IRL I have never encountered someone with an AW laptop over the age of 24. There is a pretty big overlap with the Razer demographic.

Not saying this is a negative, I just don't think that many people who buy AW have had much experience with Dell CS, or professional experience with their products.

I don't think any of us have enough information where we can speak intelligently about that based on personal exposure, and I think it is very easy to miscalculate a lot of things on that basis. This likely varies a great deal by country and regionally within a country. Since we are merely speculating, I will toss in my two cents worth.

I think a ton of Alienware's most faithful customers (those that continue purchasing their products over a period of years) are probably over age 30. I know of a number of folks in this forum alone that are over 30. I'm over 50 and Harlon was over 70. It probably safe to say none of us have a clue about any of it based on our limited frames of reference. With no marketing and sales data to support this kind of speculation, our theories are useful only for their entertainment value. I think we can apply this to almost any brand. If we look at computer enthusiasts as a whole... hardcore gamers and overclockers, there are many that are not young bucks.

Many of the youngsters that are emerging enthusiasts are second generation enthusiasts that grew up in a home with a dad that was an enthusiast. You don't stop liking cool stuff when you get older. The veteran enthusiasts may have bigger bank accounts to afford the cool stuff, but are less inclined to blow it on something cheap and half-a$$ed like an Ultrabook slapped together with BGA chips and bubble gum.

I am not saying that there isn't plenty of grown people with AW machines, its just that if you go to a college campus you are likely to see more of them being toted around in the course of a week (by students) than you have anywhere else over your whole life.

Hehe I was too busy wasting money modding cars and chasing tail in my 20's. I'm somewhat a settled down family guy now in my 30's and geeking out modding my laptop is the next best thing.

That may be totally true, since they are easy to spot on a crowded college campus with the majority of the people on campus packing around some kind of computer hardware. It would not surprise to see more Alienware laptops on a college campus at given time that what I might see at another location. As they say, "Birds of a feather..."

But, it may not be an accurate indication of demographics or overall product distribution. How many customers have one or more Alienware machines at home or in their office, or both, that are seldom flaunted in public? That might vary a lot by location and what kind of college campus as well. Is it more common among college campuses with spoiled rich brats with daddies that buy them whatever they want? Or, is it more common in technical colleges where the students are more likely to recognize quality and performance as they work to pay their own way through the education process? They cannot afford a second chance, so they have make it count. I could guess on these things, but have no earthly idea. I haven't met anyone that has a collection of that kind of information available to share with us.

I'm not saying your observations are not accurate about seeing them frequently, I just don't know how the numbers stack up looking at the big picture. It could also be inaccurate to draw any conclusions about the type of Alienware that is most popular based on what can be observed on a specific college campus. In some cases people want and buy what their clique decides is the most cool. That could be more likely among the younger customer group, as maturity often carries less tendency to be influenced by the opinions of others. As people mature, they begin to think for themselves (hopefully) and care less and less about what other people may think and say. There also comes that day of epiphany, where they realize, "Dang it, Dad was right about that."

Campus's are highly concentrated populations so it might seem to be higher but it is screwed. A large number of AW owners are probably desktop replacements and the 18 sits on a desk and never moved. Every campus I've been on over the last 10 years seems to be more little apple computers being carried around.

AW is the known enthusiast/highend gaming/lust machine that is well known. Our nice community here on our forums is a very very small piece of the whole brotherhood aw has globally.

Wait what? So there isnt snything new with the cooling on the overclocked versions? Those heatsinks looks exacyly like I had in my previous AW18.

So they are just overclocking the CPUs and not doing anything else. Haswell is already hot and made my CPU fan run too much. Id rather have better cooling to accomodate the new OC CPU or some downvolting of the CPU

That's exactly the way I read it when that BS was released. The cooling system is pretty good so all they did was unlock the (safe) level 1 overclock Intel provide in the core all along. Then make a big hoo-ha about how they had 'unleashed the power of the i7 with design engineering skills'. Those skills were at the design stage many moons ago, not some 'new' modification. My view of course ;).

If you're lucky enough to have one of the higher CPU's you get level 1-3 anyway, as I do. Single core 4.1mhz on level 3, 3.9 average across all cores and no temp problems, never hear CPU fan cranked up :).

Another disappointing news after another lol.

My AW18 had no problems cooling the CPU off either, it was just that out of all 3 fans, the CPU fan was clearly the one most active and making most noise. So it would be brilliant if they upgraded it somehow. But doesn't look like it.
