New heatsinks sound interesting though for existing users.

I'm seeing discounts being offered until the 30th of October in Europe... Ugh, I hope they make their announcement sooner. I want to know if there will be a model with a 120 Hz screen and a 980M that I can afford

I'm hoping for MQ processors. Any i7-MQ processor, a 120hz screen, and a 980m (which I'll upgrade to a x80m when the true uncut flagship arrives). That's what I'm after. It would be fantastic to hear news from AW. Personally, I think AW's Dell ties are what's keeping them from spewing out awesome Maxwell news. That's just conjecture though.

I am very disappointed as I was really excited about getting an AW notebook, but I have the feeling that this delay we are seeing is nothing compared to what it will be(expecting their new models to be announced only in November). I just hope it's worth the wait...

They publicly said they will release the Alienware 13 before the winter season. I'm assuming they'll release other stuff at the same time.
Winter is coming. -
Don't forget DDR4 ram people! I That should be making an appearance too.

Do you know if the the Alienware 17 will likely feature the 980M? Or will other models get upgraded instead (AW 18?)?

I think they will keep the same cpus . Just market them as factory over clocked so people will feel like there getting all new cpus with there new 970m or 980m.but in fact the cpus will be exactly the same just with a 200 mghrz bump. But that works for me cuz then I would be able to just plug in a new 980m in my alienware 17 and I'm good to go. Minus the 900 or 1000 it cost me but no headachs.

I'd prefer they kept the current CPU's and just added Maxwell.Click to expand...
They feature the 5x series of Intel graphics so I was kinda looking at those in a future machine in case of maximising gaming time etc as well as having discrete graphics. -
Siphorous said: ↑Just out of curiosity - what's up with the HQ versions? Is it because they seem to have lower clocks? Are they soldered in (I have no idea)?

Thankfully, that won't directly affect me because I WILL NOT spend any money on a pile of feces with a soldered-on CPU and GPU for my enthusiast system. It will only affect me to the extent I won't be able to buy something new, but who really cares if new isn't better? I know I don't enjoy spending money on downgraded disposable garbage. I hope that companies that go down this road go bankrupt for being RETARDED. If they would PULL THEIR HEAD OUT they would understand that we DO NOT give a rat's anus about "efficiency" when it comes to our performance systems, and DON'T WANT their worthless BGA filth. Believe it or not, we care about (surprise, surprise) PERFORMANCE and QUALITY. Quality is NOT a disposable system with soldered-on processors. Now, get work while you still have a job and give us what WE want, not what YOU THINK is best for us. If this post seems insulting, arrogant and insensitive toward companies that plan to roll out BGA garbage mislabeled as "high performance"... good... poop-eating morons.

It's like they're trying to sell us a Lamborghini branded Toyota Prius.
"But...but... it looks like a Lamborghini, so it must be fast, right?" -
Ah, so the main beef is that of soldered on CPUs and GPUs eh. I can understand that.
In my system though (the r3) there isn't much room for manouever with the cpu unless I go to a silly extreme which would no doubt be trounced by the newest chips. GPU is a different story but the one in mine is ok for the time being (despite being the notorious 580m).
If that GPU dies after the warranty period - I'm just wondering whether to bother getting a 'safe' 680m or investing a lot more money in a 970/980 based machine (preferably a future Alienware one). Of course, if it gets to that point - I'd be just as upset as you guys if things were soldered on. -
Just finished chat with Dell.ie salesperson....new alienware laptops with gtx980 are scheduled for December, first or second week...UK may get them sooner,as usual...anyway,finally a timeframe is available for purchase planning.

I haven't seen a single benchmark of the 970M / 980M without an HQ processor.

You got to be kidding me. And lose out how much in sales to the other companies that have actually bothered to care for their fan base and included these new GPUs.
You suck Alienwarereborn2003 and TBoneSan like this. -
definitely too long when nvidia shows the new maxwell but dell doing nothing with their laptop. just take a look at how quick clevo do with the new w230ss.

I suppose everyone's in the same boat, but if I wait two more months for the AW 17 with my crappy 5-year-old laptop which is about to physically break down and which can't run anything substantial only to find out that the AW 17 is too expensive for me (largely above ~2500€
with the 120 Hz screen & 980M (or possibly that the reviews aren't good) and that I should have bought a GT72 in October, I am going to flip a table
-
There is not one bad review on the AW 17 on this forum that I've seen. You have nothing to worry about.

I am not sure how much a salesperson can be trusted when it comes down to this kind of stuff, but I sure hope that it does not take that long... It would be tremendously stupid of them to get so far behind their competition

The only issue I have is the complete silence from Alienware. At least an appeasement, an official statement that something special is happening and that's why it's taking so long, or a delicate "We're not thinking about our current/potential use base in any way at all and don't really care"
I decided on an Alienware 18 in September and fortunately I was smart enough to do research on any upcoming tech and decided to wait until the 980m was released. Well 980m is out, and I'm still waiting to pull the trigger... I'm patient but at one point I will begin to feel disregarded and choose a competitor.
I pray they do not shift over to soldering CPU and GPU as that was one of the reasons I decided on the Alienware. -

With refreshes, they usually add new features and improvements to the systems. Given that the 900M series cards support new technology, not currently available in any laptop, I am assuming that Alienware is planning to revise the I/O support for their systems to adhere to the new 900M series technology (i.e. HDMI 2.0/2.2). It would be a shame to "pull the trigger" on a system because you're tired of waiting, and then later regret doing so only to learn that there was a better option for the same price. What I'm saying is that you should hold on there a bit longer through October. They usually launch later than others, and it's almost always worth the wait.
It is worth noting that every refresh has coincided with the launch of a new CPU lineup from Intel. There's a small chance that Alienware may be planning to launch the new AW 13 and Area-51 this winter, and wait for Broadwell to release the R2's of their current lineup (14, 17, 18). This does not mean they won't offer Maxwell in their systems in the mean time. It only suggests their systems may not be revised/refreshed (R2) until then. Personally, I find this to be highly unlikely. There's no point in waiting. Everything is already delayed and far behind. Waiting equates to nothing but lost revenue. Less people will purchase the existing systems in anticipation for the refresh, but that's just my opinion.
P.S. I'm just putting all of this out there for everyone to consider. :thumbsup:kmuller likes this. -
This waiting is driving me crazy too. If I had a nickel for every time I looked on this forum for information in the last two months it would already pay for a new laptop.lol. I just hope I can install the new 980m in my 2013 17 without moded bios or drivers and I will be happy for another 2 years.

I'd love to have the option to buy essentially what is in the MSi GT72 2QE-211 (47100HQ, 980M with 8Gb VRAM, 16 Gb of RAM, 128 Gb SSD) with a 120 Hz screen, but I'm afraid the only option will be to buy higher stuff I don't need, thus driving up the price beyond what's more or less the maximum for me (2500€. We'll see!
