Hello,
I really need to get a new gaming laptop (my old Dell xps gen2 is died) and after a lot of reasearching online I decided to get the m17. But I've heard rumors that they will be adding the new ati 4870 gpu to the system as well as offering a new bios which will allow you to overclock the extreme cpus without voiding the alienware warrany. So right now I decided to wait a bit for these upgrades to come out but I can't wait too long since I don't have a working computer at the moment. That's why I wanted to see if there are any recent rumors/leaks as of when these upgrades will be available? Any info will be much appreciated.
Thank you!

Unfortunately, at the present time there is no information available that we can share with regarding future changes for our notebooks.
Thank you. -
both HD4870's and the OCing BIOS are coming, but we don't know when exactly. If we would, this forum would be chock-full with threads about both, and this thread would be unnecessary
-
there coming thats all we can tell you and if you read the m17 sticky it will have all the information about them

Given that Alienware doesn't allow overclocking on the M17 right now, I doubt that will change. When I had the M17, I found the CPU got far too close to its thermal limit while overclocked. Overclocking certainly won't help the system's stability.
-
Could have been the thermal compound used. When I first got my QX9300, I used regular AS5 and ran Wprime a couple of times. Cores would hit around 82 max when running 1024m. Got scared because I just spent $550, ordered Noctua NT-H1, reapplied, and now it maxes around 75 and took a longer time to reach that point.
Also, I believen Fn+F12 is the OC function for the M17 with the Alienware BIOS (the newer BIOS I believe) that bumps the multiplier to a full level, which is a start... -
The Asus W90 has a separate heatsink/fan for each 4870, and a third heatsink/fan to take care of the other duties.
The M17 has room for just two heatsink/fan assemblies, and one is shared between both 3870s.
So I don't expect to see CF 4870s on the M17, no matter what anyone has heard or no matter what the sticky says. I expect single 4870, or maybe 4850CF at a push. -
time will tell
....it has been stated/rumor that flextronics is working with them to fix the issues with heat
-
They wouldn't announce it anyways. If they did, no one would order any M17's until then.
-
Bah that would force them to make a move
I'm not buying anything until they do anyway

That does present an interesting problem. No matter what Alienware does regarding modification of the GPU heat pipes, there's only one spot for a heatsink, period.
-
At this point I'd "settle" for the new 40-nm 4860 if the die shrink makes the heat more manageable.

Arctic Silver 5 was applied when I got it, and I actually re-applied it to make sure that it wasn't the issue.
Do you have any more details on Alienware's OC feature? -

Did you also apply AS5 on the smaller chip that is also covered by the CPU cooler in your M17? It had brownish cooling paste on it. Any other people change the termal paste on the smaller chip? -
Not much, other than this thread.
When the 4870 gpu and oc bios will be available on m17?
