That's exactly what I said? BUT they don't make 680mx in mxmb form what exactly are you trying to correct me on?
Edit* also it's a revision of the chip regarding The different tdp and different form factor: not soldered into the board. They didn't make the 780m with the 680mx and it's not a rebadge. I mean come on, I don't like to be corrected on something that trivial.

With this talk of the shortage I was kind of surprised to see Alienware in NZ make the 780m a 'free upgrade' on the three lower-end Alienware models. If supply is that constrained, and is expected to remain so, would they do this?
Given how much extra I paid ($890 NZD, or about $700 USD) to go to the SLI'd 780's from the 770's, I'm a bit cheezed off about this. That and the fact I'm still waiting for delivery ... -

You don't seem to understand the process, where they build the chips, test/bin them, then assemble them on to boards. The difference would be where they assemble them on to the boards, where AW is mxm, and iMacs are the mxm-sideways weird format. The TDP limit doesn't have to be set within the chip or something. -
"iMacs are the mxm-sideways weird format" - of course they are... that's the way they do things

Well put, thanks then for the explanation. Learn something more everyday. So then we all go back to this.. Why didn't they have a bunch of them? Already .. ?
-
My guess is that they did order a whole bunch, and now they are gone. Demand exceeded supply. Same thing happened with 680M. Maybe they should have ordered the same number of video cards in total, except that 100% of them be 780M (meaning having no stock of 765M or 770M on hand and handling orders for the downgraded GPU as a special order on an exception basis only).

More info: The Dell status pages stays in "in production" and the EDD still states "10/1/2013." -
-
-
-
Where are people also checking for their status?
It sounds like there are 2 places where one is more updated than the other. The dell order status page I have been using is this one:
https://www.dell.com/support/orderstatus/
Is there a better one? -
-
I was emailed by a rep today that has been keeping tabs on my order and she told me it is being delayed due to a parts shortage, as expected. My EDD is still 8/23 though for some reason, I would have expected that date to be updated by now.
-
... dammit now I'm infected with hope ... -

Bah, I do hate the waiting game, worst part of a notebook order. Hopefully something I can put to bed if my visa comes through

Update: original EDD was 8-23, now updated to 8-21..yeah !!Good Luck everyone on the 780 bubble.

Where is the place you are checking that says "partially shipped"? Its different than the Dell order statut page?(since you said that this one shows "in Production")

You said that it says somewhere that it is "partially shipped" so thats why I'm asking if you a looking to a different place than the regular Dell order page?
Also a good way to know in advance if the order is ready to be shipped, is to go to Fedex.com then select "track by reference" and enter the order number as the reference and leave at today's date.
Once they send the shippment info to Fedex it will show up (usually 1-2 days before it is tendered to Fedex)

I am very upset with alienware over this. When I ordered the laptop I was assured the EDD was accurate by several sales representatives and there would be no backorder. This is because I start graduate school on Monday the 26th and my EDD was a firm 8/22. I never received any warning, so when I saw this thread I emailed my representative who had assured me at the time of sale he would keep me updated of any changes. He nonchalantly told me my EDD was changed from 08/22 to 10/04. I ordered on 07/28. The reason I'm so upset is because I just sold my only other laptop to pay for this one, and now I'm computerless for my first 7 weeks of grad school. I don't even know what I'm going to do. Obvious answer is use university library computers but they will not be sufficient, and the hours are not compatible with my schedule.....very upset with dell/alien ware on this lack of preparation/organization
-
My EDD also changed to 10/4 today. I do not expect to have to wait that long to receive my computer though, I'm sure they are just overestimating to allow for less complaining about EDD's not being met.

Beat the wait, get an MSI laptop with a 780M! I looked at Alienware and they are just too expensive!
-
The only trouble with that suggestion is that MSI doesn't make a laptop that effectively competes with Alienware on looks, performance, build quality or service/support. We expect to pay more for a better product... at least some of us do. It would be better to just be patient and wait to get the better product rather than settling for a less expensive option because of being in too big of a hurry.
Even if they were on a level playing field, last time I checked MSI did not offer a laptop with an Extreme CPU and 780M SLI. For those that are really passionate about having a beast, anything less simply will not do.
I'm not saying that MSI laptops are no good, because they beat the stuffing out of something made by Lenovo or HP. But comparing MSI to Alienware is like comparing apples to oranges... or a Honda Civic "tuner" to a Lamborghini. They're in a totally different class. -
There's a single dead pixel on the screen though; it's toward the left edge of the screen and it's permanently red... Ugh... -
Ugh.dot.

-
From what I've seen on this forum, I think you need to have more than a couple toward the center of the screen to qualify. Also, I don't really want some technician to take apart my brand new computer just for a stupid dead pixel on the screen...
-
At the end of the day, either just cancel your order or just get some temporary computer to use (like 200-300 bucks) or live with school computers for a few weeks.
I know the sales rep said so and so, but if you follow these forums (a bit too late, I know), the sales reps REALLY do not know what's going on so banking on them is at your own peril. Especially for something like this. Lesson learned I know, but it'll serve you in the future...
One reason I haven't bought a single accessory neither yet. No SSD, bag, nothing...even when things are going on sale.
I know it sucks, but if I was in your shoes, I wouldn't have banked on it arriving. -
As I have mentioned in many posts, if you are patient, AW will be cheaper than pretty much any comparable machine if you are willing to wait for a coupon (no haggling) or sale, or pure haggling. My specs are also with a 4 year warrantee...1 year and I was at 2400 or so. -
You are correct it takes 3 near the center to be replaced under warranty although you might be able to convince your rep to send you one to replace your self. If your up to it. -
Thanks Alienwolf, rubbing in progress...
EDIT: I found that pixel can display red, blue, and black properly, so I think only the green component has problem. So far the pixel is still there.
Also, I hate to take this post to a different direction, but has anyone noticed that when the light setting is at the brightest, you can see the tape or whatever fixture that holds the screen on the backside at certain angles when there's only a single color displayed (rectangular or triangular distortion of the screen)? It's hard to explain so please see the picture: note the rectangular shape but ignore the reflection of my hand on the screen and the discoloration due to my camera.

After looking at that image, I agree with alienwolf. That screen needs to go. You can still use it like that while waiting for it to get replaced, but I would not even dream of leaving it like that and living with it.
-
-
Not ready to be shipped then. Ordered mine July 30th and updated ETA is 10/03
-
@ Hackintoshihope,
Yeah, per alienwolf's suggestion, I have tried several pixel cycling programs, massaging the screen, applying pressure, etc., and so far, it's still there with the green component inactive.
@ alienwolf and Mr. Fox,
Aye, sir, will do. But for now, since I'm in med school and it's difficult for me to be at home during normal work hours, I think I'll wait until October for the fall break. -- I have a 4-year warranty, so it shouldn't matter when I request Dell to fix the screen, right?
As for the rectangular/triangular things, they are almost unnoticeable around the screen unless the brightness is at maximum and there's a solid color displaying. The the pinkish hue is an artifact of my camera. The screen is actually good during normal computer use unless you look specifically for the defects.
PS: this community is partly why I choose Alienware, thank you guys for the inputs and suggestions. I know I will need a lot of those as long as I have the laptop. :hi2:
