This is just what you think. I'm mainly asking because on my poor-high-schooler income it will take me close to that to be able to afford a really good M17x.

Who knows but I'll tell you one thing.
I'll have one in six months regardless

It'll be the same in 6 months.
-
I don't think it will be the same. In my opinion, I think the M11x will have an i3 and the M17x will have dual 5870's.
-
There aren't any low voltage i3s.
-
Yeah, generally it doesn't seem like a huge changes are coming till Sandy Bridge. Some minor improvements and upgrades (5870CF, 480M SLI, USB 3.0, cooling, PSU) are possible however.
-
Not yet, but there are some rumors already.
Here you go. -

That's not what I meant by the same. I meant Alienware will still be successful with their products in 6 months. Things will be going the same way for them then as it is now. -
I've seen that there are going to be low voltage Arrandales already, and it's been pointed out that since the tdp is 18w (of some, others are 25w), and it has the integrated gpu on it, it will come out consuming less power than the SU7300/SU4100 and the separate integrated chip. If they call some of the 18w cpus i7s, I see no reasen for them to go to something that consumes any less power (supposed i3 low voltage). The M11x stays surprisingly cool, but I'd like to see a better ATi and the 18w i7.
Edit: The link specifies that the ultra low voltage Arrandales will be called i3s and i5s, not i5s and i7s. So pretty much I'm hoping to see an ultra low voltage i5 accompanied by an ATi of comparable power consumption and more power making it into the M11x. -
I'm also hoping that in six months they offer the Saitek X65F HOTAS bundled with their systems, instead of the X52. I really want the X65F, and when it's bundled it's almost always cheaper.

Tried to rep, but wasn't able to. Thanks for the link.

Now I remember reading that!!

Thanks for the Link Aikimox.

There's really only one thing holding me back from buying an M17x right now. I'm wondering when more laptops are getting either 120hz LCDs, or oleds. Although I want ATi cards, I expect this to only come about at a time when Nvdia cards are present, specifically for 3d purposes.

It will become like this,

I just noticed that there's an Apple mouse in that picture. lol.
-
That's probably what killed it, lol.
-
Lol! The mouse belongs to the iMac. I bet you are referring the ' mouse ' to the technician who came right?

I know Clevo is going to be releasing a new flagship in June. I'm thinking Alienware may be releasing a revised M17x at some point sometime soon as well. There is already talk of Alienware working on a laptop with a 400w PSU, curious if they will make a chassis revision or keep the same one.

what is Sandy Bridge ???

I hope to see at least some incremental improvements in AW, at the very least CF 5870!
Its the next generation chipset that allows for additional features and improvements. Someone else is gonna have to give a link for more details... -
Well just check out wiki! Intel Sandy Bridge (microarchitecture) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Should be a nice refresh. Would make for a good Christmas present. -
Man, I hope they release it soon, because if I get one and then they release the new one two weeks later I would be really mad. 400w PSU? That's alot of power. I could light up my whole house with that much power if I used CFL's, dang. I hope they either keep the current chassis, or make something that looks even cooler. How their going to do that, I don't know.
-
I wantie i3 ULV and 5730 in the M11x R2. I wantie!
-
I doubt there will be major changes within 6 months. Personaly i'd be content if Alienware would fix all the build issues the m11x has, and a stronger cpu would also be nice ofcourse
Regarding the m15x and m17x, I think its worth waiting for ati 2nd generation direct x11 cards (by the time direct x11 will be comonly used, the 1st gen gpu's probably won't be able to run the games that support direct x11 at decent settings anyway) and any Sandy Bridge (32nm) would also be a good upgrade from my current Merom (65nm) cpu ^^
Though I fear that by the time the m15x or m17x will offer what I want for a reasonable price (like a year from now), it will be in a new chassis and according to a thread I read here Alienware is no longer planning to use a metal outside cover in their future laptops (the chassis will still be metal most likely but still...). -
I would really appreciate an HDMI In port in the next refresh. Would be nice to hook up my console. I have no use for a TV and would rather get rid of it. Doesn't seem like it would be too complicated for them to add that feature.
-
In 6 months from now people will have the third iteration of the "CF 5870 HD" thread speculating that their rep's uncle's nephew's son told them the CF 5870s will be coming out next week.
