Hello, I wanted to buy a smartbay Hard Drive/Battery seperate from m15x because I don't have enough cash. I looked on the AW site and I couldn't find it. I was wondering if there was place to buy them like a Best Buy or something and if it would be cheaper or more expensive. If it's more expensive then I'll just call to change my order and get one shipped w/ my laptop.

you have to call AW to order. My advice would be to wait till you receive your system. It turns out to be cheaper

If you call to change your order it will more than likely be delayed and as taco said I believe it's cheaper to buy one once you own the laptop.

Yeah, also the smart bay is a proprietary thing to AW so you won't find it in a retailer

i wonder if its possible to just have nothing in the smartbay to lower a tiny bit of weight. I guess i could just tape the hole up to keep it clean lol!

You could. AW support has instructions on how to take out the actual Optical drive out of the supporting cage, so you should(/could) be able to use just the shell to act as a protector without the weight of the drive

I called tec and asked for the harddrive kit (just the bay without harddrive) it cost me $17 + tax and shipping! I also ordered the bay battery the total cost was $91.75 tax and shipping inc!

huh that's interesting. you could put a 500gb samsung in there for mass storage etc... tempting. oh yeah, i presume you're from north america, seeing how you were able to order a smartbay battery, right? they don't even offer the damned things here in europe... i wonder if i could just have someone from the US order one for me and ship it over... should work right?

Is this true? If so, my world of options completely opened up... i'm in the market for a HD, and if I can get a large one on my own w/ smartbay seperate, that would be IDEAL.

just remember you can only install a 2.5" HDD... so you're limited (at the top of the line) to a 7200rpm 320gb drive or a 5400rpm 500gb drive... unless you wanna take your chances with the velociraptor :)

Yes its true! The hard drive kit and bay battery (m15x) for a total of $91.75! A savings of over $300 for me! I have put a 500 GB hard in it and is working great! I choose to buy it this way ( the price of the battery is half and 10% discount on top ) because it was alot cheaper then buying it with the comp and I get to choose witch hard drive I want! You can do the same for the lcd but you have to send the laptop in and let them do the upgrade! The Lcd upgrade will cost me $265 tax inc instead of $300 + tax! Just call tec support and see for your self! :)

all i can say is wow. kinda sneaky of AW to make stuff so much cheaper afterwards. but i won't complain, and rather look forward to getting me a half-price SB battery as soon as they're available in europe.

someone who already opened his SB-HDD said that they are IDE... from my point of view this would be stupid as SATA supports hotplugging etc.

yes that would be kinda stupid. plus IDE HD's are pretty rare nowadays anyway.

newegg.com, for starters. but i'd check and make sure it's really IDE before you order. you might want to ring up AW.

no clue. maybe. you do know that SATA drives are hot-swappable, and so is the SmartBay in the m15x, right?

sorry, just trying to subtly tell you that the chances of the SB harddrive being SATA are higher than it being IDE.

They are 100% sata hard drives! You would know that when you were ordering you notebook or know anything about computers! IDE drives are on thier way out! SATA are the mainstream and Solidstate are the upcomming!

I really thought I read it somewhere here. (the thread where somebody opened a SB harddrive, made pictures and said that you can swap the HDDs) but in the end it's good, that I am wrong. :)

yes! thank you very much for the info. just ordered the kit and battery, which came out to around $90 after tax + shipping with a 10% discount. so about how many hours are getting with both batteries fully charged? both on high performance and on stealth mode?
