Hello everyone, i ordered a m17x yesterday with the lowest ram option in order to save money. So I need to update it lately myself.
However, I don't know what brand of ram alienware m17x uses: Kingston?corsair?crucial?samsung?......I want to ask to people who have already updated their ram.
Also, I want to buy the ram at 1333mhz ddr3, which brand offers best ram memory module? Which are compatible with m17x?Which site can I buy from?
Thank you for yours answers.

-
any DDR3 ram is compatible
and do you want to overclock ? -
Actually, yes. But does the overlocking present any risk to the laptop? I may overlock it to 3.02 MHz.
-
no it wont hurt it ....
what CPU do you have ?
Now the best performing is the Kingston hyperX as noted by several members works very very well -
I have extreme qx9300, gtx 280 sli, 4 gb ram ddr3 at 1033mhz
-
hi guys, i hope im not hijacking this thread but i just have a question, when i bought my m17x, i didnt see the 1333 upgrade, so went for 4gb @ 1066, is there really a difference between both ? i do not overclock
-
Moo, can you give me more information about the Kingston hyperx ram? Thanks. -
it was on dell.ca but i already have the laptop

if you want the best
but any ram will work fine i run my 1066 ram @ 1333 but i have a higher CL -
So this is the best ram curreNtly. Thank you for your information. May I add you on msn? Thanks
edit: it is pity that they don't offer 8 gb ram -
-
is it true that the 1066 runs hotter then the 1333 ?
-
yes you can add me but im on here more
to my knowledge that i not true -

Yeah i thought they were $100.00 originally..
-
flash storage prices fluctuate ALOT
-
Yeah i have been hearing the past couple months that DDR3 prices were on the rise...

that one review is in fact from me
The lower CL means less waiting for the ram between accesses which leads to slightly higher temps. In general though, ram runs hot.
I also bought it for $100 (first person we know of who got it) and it is awesome ram. I cannot imagine a usage that would actually utilize 8gb of ram though....just because the laptop can take it, does not mean it should have it.....It has been proven that beyond 4 GB there is 0 benefit to ANY games and most real world apps -
Oh, really? Why is there 0 interest with a ram which is superior than 4 gb?
-
um because you dont need it ....
-
Yes unless you have something specific in mind for using 8 gigs or even 6 gigs for that matter its just a waste of $$ ..
Your better off putting that money towards an SSD ... -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
just because it is there does not mean it will be used
If you understand how a processor, memory, and cache are utilized, you will appreciate that more ram will mean very little (if any) in system performance after you are above a certain level. And I mean understand in a Computer Engineer way, not in a "I know how to build a computer" way -
HEHE. Thank you for your answers.
What is shameful is that I am currently on my second year of College in Computer Science departement. So I just begin, and I will understand all that very soon.
So I will take the 4 gb Kingston HyperX 1333 Mhz. What does the 1600Mhz one do? Is it faster than the 1333 Mhz one? Because I don't see a big difference about price. And what overclocking multiplcator you guys advise me? 3.2 or 3.02?
Thank you. -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Both of the 1600 kits will run at 1333, since the nvidia chipset does not utilize XMP. They will run at cas 9 as well if you read the data sheet, so just get the 1333 cas 7 kit
And Comp Sci will not go nearly as much into processor design, but take it if you can, I found the class to be very cool (I am electrical engineering - would have done computer engineering but don't like programming) -
Exactely, I hate programming too. Java is ok, simpler than C. But the C language is a true nightmare, I can't understand anything about pointer. And the final exam is approaching.
Ok I will take the the 4 gb Kingston HyperX 1333 Mhz. So everything I have to do is to open the personalized plate, remove the current card and then insert the two new cards in the slots? right? Do I need any driver so that the 2 new RAM could be functionnal? -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
You remove the back cover, then remove the small silver plate. The personalized plate stays on the back cover. No drivers are needed
Yes points are tricky, but crucial. C is easier to learn, but much harder to debug haha -
Yes. To be honest, I want to be videogames designer, and also videogames music compositor. I am quiet good in music. And I love videogame music such as Final Fantasy ones. Nobue Umetsu's music is just amazing.
But I will try to stay with programming. Even if I dislike it. -

I bought the Kingston kit. I've used their ram many times and always been very happy with it. It allows for better overclocking or just generally more stability.

You won't regret it. Top notch brand...excellent for overclocking and general bad-assery.
-
Ok. A little question to you, according to you, what is the reason which incites you to take the ATI crossfire as graphic card for your m17x?
-

I picked it because it is a newer generation of tech than the 280m.
I have been a customer of both ATI and Nvidia in the past, and found both to be great manufacturers. I have been burnt by both companies and been great pleased by both.
For me, it really came down to the ATI's being newer, supporting DX10.1, and that was about it. The reviews were pretty even so I figured I would give them a shot. If I want the 280's down the road, they will be cheaper to pick up than the 4870's would have been going the other route.
Also, when I placed my first order the ATI's were still being listed as DDR5. -
ATI has newer tech in there cards IE Directx 10.1 vs DirectX10/Shader model 4.1 vs Shader model 4.0 on the Nvidia end.. Nvidia is now finally Adding DX10.1 to some of there current cards as Directx 11 is already here and is the future..
In the end though with the current crop of games out the performance in some games will be better on either end ATI or Nvidia depending on the game..
You cant go wrong with either but from a pure benchmarking standpoint the ATIs are winning by a decent margin and i dont see the Nvidias ever catching up as people have already squeezed them as much as humanly possible ... -
And what about overclocking? I heard a lot of people who said that it is difficult to overclock ati than nvidia
-
you just need to flash your GPU bios right now but i think there will be a tool eventually
-
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, I cannot decide which one I take. ATI cross fire 4870 or Nvidia GTX280 SLI?
I read a lot of topic about these 2 kind of cards, and pros and cons are 50%-50%. I am really confused now. I don't even know if i should cancel my order to change the GTX 280 to a crossfire 4870
Could you help me please? -
If i were ordering right this second the ATIs would be the cards hands down..
In the end though like i said the difference in gaming for the most part will be a wash and not worth racking your brain over...
Reason i push the ATI cards more is because of the features i also mentioned before ...
Depending on how far your order is along would be whether i cancelled or not.. If your weeks into the build then no dont bother but if you ordered this morning then yes go ahead and switch because you have sometime on your hands waiting already and an extra day or 2 is not going to kill you this early on... -
ok. I see some topics on other forum that GTX 280 Sli performs only in Crysis, and in all other games, the winner is ATI cross fire 4870 HD.
-
There both very close in performance but yes the ATI cards are the winners...
So if you live by the rule "If you aint first your last" then get the ATI cards..

That is a particularly unusual circumstance that would absolutely utilize the ram. Was just saying, 99% of people don't need more than 4 gb.
-
fine
if you have to come to a forum to ask what kind of ram you need your prolly will not need more then 4 gb's -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Well said Moo, like I always have said, if you don't know if you need 8 GB, you don't need it
-
I've been hunting around for 4GB HyperX individual sticks from Kingston (or the equivalent elsewhere), but I guess they don't exist yet. -
Sager Meister, if you find any let me know.
I must be the 1% that would need 8gb! use my m17x for video edding on sony vegas -
You guys would probably benefit more from the Sager NP9280. More hard disks, desktop processor, all that good stuff.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
ya, for actual produciton work, the d900f is the way to go, and you get the trip channel memory (up to 12GB)
-
Yeah, but that's too practical.
I do want to game also. It's a flexibility thing. Plus, I've owned both a Sager and an Alienware machine, and I just like the build quality of the latter better. The M17x ratchets that up even further with its non-plastic, aluminum shell.
Sagers are good machines, and the one I had lasted 3+ years, but eventually the hinges broke. It also doubled as a space heater. My current Alienware is coming up on its 4th year, and while it has its issues, I still love using "Big Blue".
If my m7700a could hold more than 2 GB of RAM, I might have tried nursing it along for one more year. -
2x4gb Kingston hyperx ram will be the "ultimate version". I would buy them even if I don't use the extra ram. Just want to be "ultimate". Hahhaha...
-
lol the 4gb is enough for most of the thing for m17x.. i wouldn't change for quite some time now =)
Which brand of RAM for alinware m17x update
