Which would be quicker: the 3870 crossfire in the m17 or the 260 m sli in the m17x?

    I'll put it this way:

The 3870s weren't faster than 9800M GTs or 9800M GTX in SLI, and the GTX 260Ms in the M17x are faster than both of those.

    It's a no contest blowout.

Yep 2x 260M's will absolutely positively rape and pillage those petty little 3870's with no remorse.

    Dual 260Ms destroy dual 3870s.

Based on the specifications Nvidia put out, the 280m have about 18% more raw horsepower than the 260ms. The GTX 280m is rated at 562 gigaflops while the GTX 260m is rated at 462 gigaflops.

However, this may not translate directly into an 18% speed boost in real world tests. In a rough guesstimate, I'd say you'd see a 10 to 15% difference in benchmarks. It all depends on the game, how well it's coded, drivers, etc.

Yeah in real world gaming performance its more like 10 maybe 15% more, on average performance for the 280M's over the 260M's the extra 16 stream processors per GPU or 32 total in SLI plus the 280M's slightly higher clocks, do not give it that much more of a performance increase I'm sure Nvidia's results are skewed a bit, also the 260M's should be easily over clocked to stock 280M's levels, definitely the dual 260M's are the better buy for price performance ratio on the M17x.

There was a chart comparing the 260m vs the 280m in that 200+ page thread. It's between page 150-200. gl.
