I am about to go ahead and do this. All of my computers are running XP Professional with SP3, and it just feels SO much faster than this new computer (with an SSD btw). My new computer is about twice as powerful, but feels just as fast. About to go ahead and downgrade unless someone has a really good reason otherwise.

    Any opinions?

I gotcha, so you are planning on upgrading to Win7 when it comes out, but will stick to Vista until it does so.

Well you are probably going to put a 32bit os on a 64 bit system which will not utilize it to its fullest.. If you use 64bit xp, well I still have nightmares of that and there is no way I will ever do that again.... So, doesnt leave me with any option beside possibly win 7

Were you not around when Vista was released

Even with Vista dumbed down and all its eyecandy turned off, it was still about 40% slower in almost all benchmarks, including start up, shut down, and restarts.

that was before Vista is a stable OS and better then XP for gaming not just because of DX 11

you should just use win 7 till the official release ...

i doubt you can even down grade due to drivers lacking

Yes I've been working in the industry for 20 years so I didn't miss the release of Vista. Do you have a link showing what benchmarks were run with the initial release of Vista compared to it's current version and Windows XP?

vista is not as bad anymore as it was at release, people need to get over that besides no one in their right mind will put a 32 bit os on this machine especially since win 7 is around the corner that is vista done as it should have been in the first place. I currently use win 7 64bit on 3 machines with no issues at all and better performance on top of it even though it is still in a testing phase. xp is old, outdated and support for it via microsoft is coming to an end soon as well as most 3rd parties are starting to drop driver support for xp as well.

So downgrade to xp if you want but most of us will not.

I agree most of Vista's issues are PR related and not technical ones.

You think the google community is not informed on the release of Windows 7, a major operating system, "invinceable"?

I think it absolutely is, I have just read several places about the different versions, some which are free to download and others which are going to lock up in July.

Just asking for some help, that's all.

get it straight from microsoft windows 7 webpage, i believe they are still giving it out until july, it just requires that you have a windows live ID. The client will be the RC version and is good until june 2010, in april 2010 it will start to shut down every 2 hours but considering win 7 is being release oct 26th, it should be plenty of time to be legit by then.

win 7 64b will be about a 3.2gig download by the way

Since u have ssd's you have to do a lot of optmizations (built int vista and even better in 7) in order to make it ssd friendly. Just warning you ahead of time.

yeah, Win7 is the way to go if you have an SSD.

with standard drives there really isn't a reason to upgrade from Vista, unless you just really wanna. the 64bit Vista outruns XP constantly, hell, I had 32-bit applications (in particular, 3DMark06) giving higher speed ratings on 64-bit Vista, than on XP... it was kinda funny.

bottom line, Vista was like every other MS release... even XP took at least one service pack before it was tolerable (does anyone even run XP without a service pack anymore? does anyone remember how bad it was?) same with W2K, and even Windows 98. they gave up on 95 and ME...

W2K Server even had a flaw where the remote terminal server would crash after about 5 minutes, making a head-less server useless after being on for 5 minutes. haha. but whatever.

Vista was the transition OS between 32 and 64-bit... considering XP x64 Edition never caught on... hopefully Win7 will be 90% 64-bit.

95 was a transition OS too... but we don't talk about that anymore.
