Someone posted this in the gaming forum, which I thought was a nice find, so i thought Id post down here just for those who don't visit that part of the forums.

Appearently you can use this device to use desktop gfx cards to replace the ones on your laptop.

No support for xfire or sli it seems, but it could in the future I'm sure, and then we could turn our systems in REAL powerhouses :D

    maybe ;)

however it would take quite a chunky single gpu to best the xfire 3870's

Why not putting a Desktopcard in ;) (I think space heat power and wait isn't a problem)

well even if you put it in SLI you need a seriously fast interface

Hmm, might be nice to make a cable that connects directly to the mobo connector with a header on the back of the case.

Easy to unplug but not so easy to switch to original graphics card.

Sounds like a good mod for a laptop with integrated graphics as well.

    M17X?

The connection bandwidth will always be a problem as each new generation of faster GPU will require an even faster interface connection to support it (and it will succeed only if that is possible). Seeing as the interface is built into the laptop you're still going to need to purchase a new computer to upgrade every time a faster connector is developed.

The real benefit to external cards is not ease of upgrades but getting desktop performance in a more portable system.

these kind of external solutions using pcmia or expresscard have been around from MANY years. it's NOT a serious solution...
usually these solutions are very expensive and very low performance.

    maximum expresscard bus: 2.5 Gbit/s

    pci-express:
    v2.0: 500 MB/s per lane
    (SLI/CROSSFIRE) 16+16= 16gb/s

    v3.0: 1 GB/s per lane
    (SLI/CROSSFIRE) 16+16= 32gb/s

Expresscard limits the bandwidth from an inserted ×16 video card (4 GB/s in each direction), to just ×1 (250 MB/s in each direction).

There are already external graphic solutions for desktops, Nvidia Quadro Plex using a pci-e 8x or 16x card and slot for interconnect the cable.

In computex 2008 AMD announced the ATI XGP technology based on proprietary cabling solution which is compatible with PCIe signal transmissions.
It really uses an external PCI Express 2.0 connector.
"The device connects to specially designed notebook using the uniquely crafted external PCI Express© 2.0 connector designed and developed with JAE Electronics, Inc"
This is the only real solution. and it really works.
