I agree, GabeZ. I was trying to inspire milcs to use his creativity to imagine scenarios in which one computer or another could be regarded as "technologically better", as a matter of opinion, to whomever is using that computer.
I have a buddy who refuses to change over to PCI graphics because he insists that AGP technology is superior. This is a guy who studies circuitry and technical manuals on the subject.
Personally, I think my friend is off his tree. He plays the original EverQuest because that is about the most advanced game his system will run. But that is his opinion.

surely it's not very noticeable with todays games, but what about photoshop? solidworks? those are cpu intensive apps. -
While this is true, most users dont buy a 15.4 inch laptop for graphics applications. They need high resolution screens and bigger screens. I am not saying that the new motherboard wont be faster. It certainly will be. I am simply stating that the performance differences are not so incredibly better for the m860tu that the m15x will be obsolete or even not be a competitor.
-
there is a wide different between "almost unnoticeable" and "not so incredibly better", don't you think so? majority of graphic design major students use 15.4" in my school.
-
I myself am getting the m860tu for the mere fact its going to be the only powerful 15" laptop on the market. Most people want portability more than screen real estate these days, if they really need it, they'll attach a larger screen to the laptop. Honestly, carrying around a 10 lbs wide 17" laptop gets tiring after a few years and this comes as a great welcome.

Just came back home and read what line and plug posted... Oh well... What else can I say?
Oh wait... I know... whatever. My "creativity" is really not that good.
Let's talk about something else then. -
I do think the m15x is powerful in what it does, portraying that marketing can overcome the obstacle of a horrendous product and establish a fan base to always support it to the death. But as a laptop, nope. The only powerful 15" laptop will be coming out in 2 weeks. -
you do know that there are some m15x's out there that are perfectly fine right...
-
I know I know
I'm just playin'. Both laptops have their pros and cons, god bless anyone who exercises their right to freedom of choice. I know I did. -
in fact there are more than a few and it is quite possible that the same overheating issues that plague the m15x will plague that m860tu
-
-
Skidude... look at last weeks. Look at the ammount of reports from people that have been here since before they received it. Look at how many cases of broken GPUs are there? Don't you think that's a bit too much? In one week? And it's not that these people came here to complain...
Maybe people should really use their brains instead of their hearts. Hearts will only become heartburn...
Anyway... I'm hopping my new M15x (whenever I get the replacement) will be great. I'm a bit tired of trying to make people see the truth... but they refuse. -
People on this forum are more likely to notice problems that would not plague the common user. Admittidly, on a notebook like this there shouldnt even problems that go unnoticed by the average user, but most wont even notice things like underclocking and overheating. Also remember, there are lots of people on this forum who posted they were ordering their m15x and then never posted any sort of review when they got it. Most likely because it worked great out of the box. You never seem to take this into account.
-
Maybe I'm being optimistic milcs, but you HAVE to think that there is a good deal of working laptops out there, otherwise Alienware's resellerrating ( http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Alienware) should be down the tube and nobody would order from them. What lineazy said I have to agree with as well.
But that's just me being an optimist -
True...
But look at the examples of Syth, crissha13, yankesball... all damaged GPUs. It's not that you can keep playing without the GPU.
Kitanna... No lights on some areas of the laptop... It's really something that does not go unnoticed to anyone... appart from AW quality control.
Jordan and Daedric complaining about bad speakers...
EDIT: I almost forgot:
Andrekm- CPU downclocking of a laptop that was received less than one week ago.
Elclitosius- Still can't use touchpad and keyboard at the same time.
Most of these people have been here for a long time... they didn't come to complain. They do, in fact, have issues. Issues that are completely unnaceptable when we are talking about a computer like and Alienware, that costs the money it costs. It's really absurd this keeps happening...
To finish... I have no doubt that AW lives only due to their fan/"afficionados" base. That's the only thing that can justify such a poor quality computer to continue being manufactured. It's like Apple... a bit of crap with amazing marketing supporting it. -
You're all overlooking one obvious fact. If Alienware does the inspection like they claim, there can be only one other issue...........the shipper. As a Dell contractor I've seen it thousands of times. The laptop is in great working order when it leaves the facility. However, the shipper gets a hold of it, tosses it around a bit, and by the time it gets delivered, some things are either damaged or shooken loose. Why do you think Dell switches shipping carriers?
Gabe -
I'm just glad I went with the M17x... the few who have received it like it (I haven't heard a single complain from Menneth) and I'm pretty sure it won't have the same disastrous level of issues the M15x had.
@ GabeZ- I've had two different computers (one laptop, one desktop) delivered via FedEx without any issues. It's all about packing, not the carrier. -
I wouldn't be so sure. But we'll just take your word for it.
-
I've been really lucky with everything to do with UPS, DHL, or FedEx. Never had any late shipments or damaged items.
-
If i ever receive a damaged item from any of these guys, i'll sue.
I trust them with the package. I don't need them destroying it. -
actually you wont have to sue since those companies have insurance. they will pay for the damages.
-
I would have to agree with the others that Most of alienware laptops have been working 100%. The few that had major problems have come to here. Then we get the ones that go. Dont buy alienwere they are cheap and mine did not work right. Pout Pout Pout.
What people should do is go ok I have a problem. What can I do. It like a second view on the problem. It like doctors. if One doctor seid you will die in a month. Are you going to sit and Pout for that month and die. No what you will do is ask other Doctors. -
i think you speak for a lot of people lol
-
-
Lineazy and Atol pretty much summed up my opinion.
-
Go and tell that to Syth, Crissha, Andrew, Eclitosiousus, etc...
They have been here before looking for information...
A forum like this should be like Clevo's one... mostly sharing information and knowledge (with also problems being discussed). Why is AW only about problems?
I was quite happy with the thread about OC'ing the 8800GTX. That's what we should see more of. More people happy and sharing their "tricks and tips" and less people describing their never ending problems, day after day.
More... I think people missundertand a strong attitude to try and make something happen with "pouting". If lots of us here make lots of noise is to make changes happen. Honestly, no one can be indifferent to THREE GPUs being fried in less than one week of use... and this was just last week. Honestly... can people really see how there is something wrong? -
I think this forum has a good balance, and that's mainly down to the members (you guys.. and girls).
When people moan and complain, I've noticed that people are only too happy to offer possible solutions for them, and suggestions. I think that this forum is very helpful, and patient.
And of course, there are still threads that are useful to the more experienced members who wish to OC things and take their computers above and beyond.
EDIT: To attempt to explain it... it's like you all WANT the M15x to work out well for everybody, which is really sweet. -
-
People should open their eyes and understand no one here is fighting against anything. We are indeed, all on the same side. We just want to have a perfectly functional M15x. Is that asking too much? Of course we could do like most of the people and just mind about our problems... but if people are putting an effort in trying to help everyone by making sure no more problems exist... I fail to see where that's not just the right thing to do! People need a wake up call... -
Is there a chance we would have a case if everything was compiled and sent to some kind of independant investigative body like trading standards? I might mean something else, but trading standards is the only thing I can think of off the top of my head. I know what I mean though...
Just somebody who could ask on the behalf of all the complaints and look into why faults are occurring. If AW were that concerned, wouldn't they have tackled the repeated problems by now? -
gd idea but i don't know the answer to the Q
-
I am almost 100% positive it is not AW's intention to have problems. I am sure they want every owner happy and spread the good word.
But they have some issues to work out and how is that my burden to bear? I work hard for my money and purchase a product and then you expect me to help them figure out their problems? -
I think you might have missed my point...
I agree with you in any case. We should not be responsible for any of their mistakes and we should not have been used and guinea pigs. It's really revolting...
