After Watching avatar in 3d I now have to have a 3d system. Well at home everything is good to go but my 25" monitor will not pass. Needs 120Hz LCD. Wondering if AlienWare R-2 will support 120Hz or faster for 3d to work? 1920 x 1200 RGB LED Is what I am planning on getting But will need 3d bad. Can not find info on this new 1920 x 1200 RGB LED and Do I really need RGB, Will it make a big difference? I have the cash for MX 17 but want to wait 1 or 2 weeks to see how the refresh is going. Want to make sure no one is having problems with them. Looking at around $3,400 now so I want to make sure It can do the many things I like.

Correct me if i am wrong, but do you not need to have a special monitor designed to project 3d for it to actually work.
if you really want 3d the 3d TVs will be out very soon, those are up to 40 inch beasties and will allow you to view Avater in its glory once it comes out on BLUE RAY. -
Yes you need 120Hz, no the M17x has a 60Hz screen. Most TVs these days are 120Hz. Alienware sells a 24" 120Hz TN panel 1920x1080 for $499. It "matches" the M17x.

From what I am seeing at Nvidia site you need atleast 120hz and have a tool to test your system for it. I have dual 1gig 9800 gtx and will pass for 3D but says the monitor is not up to par. (IH252) 25" HDMI Seems like this monitor would pass for 3D as it is only a few months old but will not past the test. Other places I have searched said for 3D it needs more that 120Hz for monitor.
Has anyone gotten a 3D experience from their MX 17? I know there are a lot of games that support 3D. Even thought I am not big into gaming It will be nice to have.
Will be a long time till I get a new TV. Hard to part with my 65" Mit HD. -
The asus g51 has a variant that supports 3d.

a 40" TV will suck so bad in 3D that it's not worth it.
If you want 3D experience, you really need either sit very close to the TV or need 50"+.
The image doesn't really "come out" with small screen area. I hope you know what I mean. -

And yes, as far as I know you need 120hz+ refresh rate to adequately convey the 3D experience. -
The preferred way to get 3D on a computer is to have special glasses that will blank out each eye in turn to the screen frame-rate. A screen refreshing 120 times a second allows 60 combined frames for 3D content. Less then 60 refreshes a second and you start to get headaches and what-not, which is why 120hz is needed, 120 divided by two eyes is 60.
A less preferred way is with the red-blue glasses, this will work with any screen but messes a bit with colors. If you have the right glasses for that you can get a taste of what the 3D looks like using the 3D vision Discover option when setting up 3D.
A way that's better then both of those is with circularly polarized glasses with each lens polarized at 90 degrees to the other, but the technology to get the picture projected is only commonly found in 3D theatres.

There are no 1080p 120Hz laptop sized panels in existence yet. Later this year hopefully. Once available 3D will take off in a big way with gaming laptops. nVidia 3D Vision and 3D Vision Surround demo's were awesome at CES this year. Not only Alienware 1080p panels were on display but also the new Acer:

I haven't found any retailers in the US yet but if they are this cheap in the UK they should be a lot less than $499. The problem is currently the only GPUs which can do 120Hz stereo gaming are nVidia so if you get the 4870's or the new 5870's in the M17x-R2 you will be out of luck unless ATI get their act together. Stereo gaming is also a massive performance hit as the GPU has to calculate everything twice, including the shaders. It might be a while off before it's any good in laptop form unfortunately.
It's such cool technology though, I want it now! I might have to build a beast of a desktop rig and scale back on the laptops -
iaTa, does the 3D seem immersive even if the game wasn't designed for it? For example, if I'm playing MW2 and someone tosses a grenade towards me, will it seem as if the grenade is coming out of the screen towards me in 3D?

Well nVidia had a few games on show - Avatar: The Game, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Dark Void, Just Cause 2 and Need for Speed: Shift.
Now I know Batman and Dark Void are 3D Vision certified - I'm not sure about the rest - but they were all absolutely awesome (especially Dark Void). I was completely absorbed into the game even though I was stood in the middle of the Las Vegas Convention Center with thousands of people around me and bright lights etc. Really stereo gaming has arrived and it's here to stay. You're going to love it
The 3D Vision Surround projector setup they had was running on 2 x Femi cardsAlso spectacular. Oh and the 3D Blu-Ray wasn't bad either. You could potentially buy 3 x Acer 120Hz 1080p panels for around a third of the price of a M17x. Then build a desktop rig with 2 x Fermi cards with the rest of the money and have one hell of an awesome setup. That's my conundrum right now. If only mobile Fermi SLI was closer!
