I'm curious as what people think as to whether or how long m17 will last after new All Powerful M17x comes out?
I remember when the m15x and m17x first came out and the m9750 was thought lowly of, but its tried and true design persisted for a long time. Don't get me wrong the new m17x from a technical standpoint seems far superior, and all those lights do look fancy...but there just something about the classic black skullcap of the m17 carrying on the m9750 heritage.

M17 is still Montevina and a lower priced option. I think it'll be there at least until Calpella is released.
-
It's much lighter and has support for the 3870s, with a probable upgrade to the 4870s. It also has a more restrained style that will appeal to some buyers. I'd say it will continue to be offered. It's not like when the m9750, m17x Mark I, and m17 were all available, each based on a different generation of technology. Counting the XPS 17, Dell/Alienware had four 17" gaming machines offered at once. It looks like the two models will compliment each other very well, and streamline the gaming laptop options.
-
why would the m17 just die?>
quad support and high end GPU's don't just die -
-
Yes the M17 will survive.
-
no im selling mine because i need to downgrade
3 reasons
1 need better battery life
2 help people at NBR and to push this laptop
3 downgrade( i just dont need all my m17 firepower now) -
The M17 will survive just fine like the M9750 did.
This may also be how we get our much anticipated 4870's with DDR5. -
how is selling your unit a step up to a downgrade? would you not be upgrading by selling your m17 to acquire the new m17x?
curious... -
-
He's just trying to justify the purchase...lol!
-
Yep, after seeing how ugly the new m17x is and with the current m17 pricing, I just ordered a brand new one tonight. $59 for 4GB of RAM from Newegg, and I plan on taking the 2 new 320 GB drives I just put in my m9700 and moving them to this. Should be one heck of an upgrade for not much more than $2k.
-
Beauty will always be in the eye of the beholder....congrats on your purchase!
-
I'd gladly give my M9750 and M17 for that gorgeous ne M17X!
I guess I'm a beholder. -
I think it will stick around with those nice GPus and quad core and the styling. I love mine and hope to add quad core and possibly upgrade the GPus at some point also
-
I really like my M17 and have never had any trouble with it. -
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
of course it will. most people already stated why.
-
Hey Don,
You mean you're not gonna sell your rig and get a new M17X? -
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
no. Lol. that alienware is going to be way out my price range. don't forget the only reason the m17 is cheap is cause ocz also had it. otherwise that would of easily gotten a 300 dollar bump. IMHO
-
lol - only 300? your being a bit generous dont ya think?
-
OCZ and everyone else had this model!
Now we've got exclusivity with the M17X. Ouch! -
we have exclusivness with the m15x as well...no?
-
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
woah i just saw your 3dmark. i think you just beat e-wrecked with his x9100.
i like when different people had the ocz the price was competative good for us not for them. -
EDIT:Crap! no I didn't. It was a typo, the 9 is supposed to be a 6. -
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
let me check. i'm serious. i think he was 15,892
-
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
yeah you did. you better put up x9100 record next to yours.

Sorry to say I accidentally pressed 9 instead of 6!
So close too!
I don't know how I can squeeze another 280 points out of this thing unless an awesome driver comes along. -
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
oh i see all you have to do is push your gpus and you there. if you want best results. email me and i'll help you out.
-
Sounds good Don,
I'm still waiting on my new thermal paste though. I usually get stuff fast from Newegg but it's been like 8 days so far.
As soon as it arrives I'll drop you a line.
Thanks.
I'm gonna go wipe the egg off my face now! lol -
I doubt the M17 will be phased out only because you can get a really good price on the M17's now (2000 for my specs and more?).
Its a cheaper altenative for the tight economy and ATI fans will probably stick with it. -
-
I know I'll end up comparing the price of similar specs between the M17 and M17x. Hopefully the difference won't be too bad.
-
If GDDR5 isn't an option, they need to at least put DDR3 4870's in the M17 and it will remain a great option. Right now the 3870's are fallling behind though. You can't buy a gaming notebook based on it's 3dmark06 score alone
The 4870's and 280's won't get much higher at 06, but the game scores have been and will be a lot higher.

electrosoft Perpetualist Matrixist
The only issue with the new M17x is currently the 280M's aren't really leveling the 9800M GTXs which in turn are equivalent (or a tad less) than the 4870's in the W90vp at stock.
Stock speeds are what matter to me for everyday use 99% of the time.
In the end, I think you will see the 4870's, 280M's, 9800M GTXs all in the same ball park, while the 3870's will be placed in the realm of 9800GTS, IMHO. -
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
so your input is the 4850, 280m, 9800m gtx all single is the same. i am trying to look for post but i can't find any.
msi gt725, vs sager np5797 vs (i don't know any notebook with a single 9800m gtx right now.) vs 3870 CF(lol i'm just playing about this one. it will win. ) -
I recently brought my M17 and i do love it to bits. I am not tempted with the new offering, aside from the GFX card for all main purposes its not that different.
i will change to a quad soonish and possibly 4870's depending on price.
Failing that i will wait for this refresh's refresh -
the m17 is stilll a very nice rig
i love mine -
I guess time will tell. It's a nice rig at current, but unless they make some upgrades soon after the new m17x comes out this week, I'm afraid it will fall by the wayside. I hope not though. I personally like the look of it better than the new one.
-
The M17 is more portable than the new M17x (it's 0.41 inches thinner and over a kilo lighter, I think). Plus, it's much more budget friendly (Alienware must acknowledge that there is an economic crisis going on >.>). Keeping this in mind and that it will soon (hopefully) get the 4870s, bringing it within the realm of the new M17x, no, I really doubt it'll die out.
I just wish alienware would do a bit more with the M17, give it a few more flashy lights like the new M17xI have to say though I love the matte black finish on the M17 and I personally really like the old style that it uses.
-
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
the m17x is only going to be budget friendly if it is upgradable like the m17.
-
-
With the m9750, everyone said it would last a long time with an upgrade to dual 8800 in SLi.. Alienware pulled that essentially at the last minute and instead offered the new m17x with no additional upgrades for the m9750.
The m9750 lasted for about a year and a half with no new GPU upgrade path using intel montevina CPUs.
If Alienware decides NOT to release new 4870s for the m17, how long to you think it will last?
I want to believe Alienware will release 4870s for their m17, I really do, but history tells me otherwise... -
grey , they will because they have nothing to lose...
nvidia fans = m17x
ati fans = m17
simple
its the 4th time without answerwhen i post this: how much do you think the 4870 will cost over a 3870?
-
-
no its not a guess because the m17 is the one with reasonable price
so if you know the prices of both cards you can make an assumption i dont know them -
-
i dont know english that good, but ill try to make myself clear
1 for me assumption is more than a guess , its a prediction when you have something to count on
2 and i dont know the aprox prices, maybe some of you knows
#45 sounded intersting
is it better now ? -
ati price and performance are more reasonable than Nvidia when the upgrade options are listed. So i go for ati
-
performance in what?
-
(4870 vs. gtx280)performace in gaming is on the par although very few games could be slightly faster than ati. However, if using mobility modder to get the most updated drivers could fix all the issues
Will M17 survive after new M17x?
