I can see the price being better with the ATI, but performance and driver support? Nah.

The more I read up on the speeds needed for GDDR5 to shine, the more I see them being a very, very modest bump over the GDDR3 cards.
ATI has been playing catchup to Nvidia, and with the 4800 series, they are finally on par, if not a smidge ahead, than the 280M. But it won't be any earth shattering wins either way like on the scale of the (4870's, 4850's, 9800M GTX/260M, 280M) compared to the (3870's, 8800/9800gts, 9600gt etc...) out there.
Vantage GPU definitely shows which cards are next gen and which are not.
Now, with that being said, the M17/OCZ is STILL a killer notebook capable of playing all modern games. It is when you push max details/effects it starts to feel the pinch moreso than the 'big boy,' cards out there. -

ok well my notebook comes on tuesday wenesday. so we can do some test with you, me, john, and anothergeek. i am the only one with a dual core
. i have toget the q9650 asap.
-
Electro, you've got your W90 right? You want to run some overclocked single GPU benches? I can match up with 1080p.

also i LOVE my system but i need something with better battery life so i am going to get the m17x that way ill have better battery .
it will be a serious step down in performance.
my mind is made up -
My m17 lasts nearly 2 hours, i cant imagine a desktop replacement lasting much more then that
Pete -
The new M17x has integrated GPU that you can use for less battery usage, atleast I think that's what moo's referring too
-
yeh i guess, but with the size of the m17x i cant imagine having it on my lap on a train for long, however i do carry the m17 tho
-
haha that would be funny if everyones m17...just died, so theyd have to buy the new m17x...
Sorry thats just what I thought of when I first read the post and my humor is kind of wack.
Im sure when they come out with the new 4870s the m17 will be right on par with the m17x again... -
if you add 4870's to the m17 aside from being nvidia there isnt really alot of difference
kinda of a relief for me tbh lol -
I'm just praying that they decide to add the 4870s to the M17. They might decide not to in order to increase the popularity of the new M17x. (In my opinion, it would be stupid. With the M17 with 4870s and the M17x with 280Ms, they target both the nVidia and ATi markets.)
-
that would be the smarter way to go
try to get both markets.
the m17 will be right on parmaybe even better .... flash with OCZ and overclock and you have a winner
-
Interesting, if you spec out a m17x the same as the m17 its almost exactly the same price. I'm curious to see if the price drops on m17?
-
You see, Moo, that's the problem...If it would be on par or even better then it would draw a lot of attention away from the new M17x most likely, due to the fact that it would (likely) be cheaper. (At least I think it would, I doubt it'd cost something like $1000 for the upgrade to 4870s) And for that reason, Alienware might not go there.
I really hope they do though. I personally prefer the M17 in the way of mobility, with its larger battery and the fact that it's lighter and thinner. (I wish they'd put that new M17x style in it though, that thing looks really nice.) -
They will have to drop price or start upgrading the m17, there's no reason it should cost as much as the m17x. I'm guessing they will keep the price high on the m17 initially to push the market toward the m17x. Then after they have sold a certain benchmark they will start lowering m17 and hopefully start upgrading it!
-
I have heard that the M17 will be discontinued shortly, and the new M17x will get HD4870 options. Dell intend to have all their gaming models under the one brand.
-
i would throw my m17 into the trash if that happens......and im dead serious too
-
That would be very disappointing indeed!
I mean the M17 is still a quite capable machine, seems like a waste to just discontinue it, at least until the architecture of it prevented further upgrading. But until then, it seems stupid to drop it... but I wouldn't count it out yet, it's tried and true. Just like when the m15x and m17x first came out, lots of hype, then nothing but post after post of problems.... you will always have bugs to get worked out on new models. -
just give it to me
halogod, where did you get that secret info about 4870? -
AW tech support guy. His name is like *****. he knows me for calling all the time hinted this info to me.
took out his name, dont wanna get him fired -
I just needed to know hes a aw rep -
I really hope that is not going to be the case! Hope there is some forewarning before anything drastic happens.
Additionally I question how long the M15x will survive until it's replaced? -
-
Hey im the buyer -
im actually thinking of selling my m17...dirt cheap for like 1200 with everything
-
pull the quad and the HDDs first
-
But you would have to, with 3 other M17s for sale in the bst forum -
Really. Pull the QX9300, RAM, HDDs (even just if it's 1) and sell it as a barebones for like $700-800.
Quad's worth $400+, HDD's worth another $100 or $200, and RAM's worth at least $50. -
naw...im gona keep my m17...it maxes all games still...i will wait for the next laptop release...its just amazing how much the m17 value dropped, pretty worthless machine w/o gpu upgrades for many
-
So the nerdrage has passed. That's good.
-
lol almost...still dying for the new m17x....but o well, life goes on........
.....not really that m17x is too da** nice -
I know. I'm just looking for reasons to buy Nvidia cards now and not wait.
If only the game list for Physx was more attractive... but the only game on there that's a selling point is Fallen Earth because I got a beta account. -
nvidia will be better for overclocking and the crysis games lineup.
-
And don't forget the Nvidia cards will be less CPU dependent.
I also prefer the mobile driver support provided by Nvidia. -
Don't know about that. After they broke the limits on the clocks looked like they were able to push the 4850s in the W90 and GT-725 further on overclocks than the GTX 280M with increased voltage.
-
They're only less CPU dependent in synthetics and Physx games. -
Remind me again how long the 280 GTX has been out?
-
-
Oh, you mean the previously fastest GPU's offered by A.W. in a laptop?
-
You're not selling me on them Rob. ;þ -
go for the gtx280m's....i would even if they offered the 4870's. The shaders on the 280's will give u better performance on latest games...and dont listen to ati's "we have 1000000 shader cores" cuz they count theirs different and actually have less
-
And I'm not trying to sell you anything, especially not a card that's really a 4850 w/DDR3.
You are obviously partial to the "4870's" just as I'm partial to the "280 GTX's".
I guess we'll just have to wait a little longer to see the proof.
I'll go ahead a bookmark these posts. -
man i have always been a ati person. but i have to say so far in notebook drivers especially they have less than stellar support... wait let me correct that they have terrible support. i would so much rather buy ati but nvidia is just SO MUCH better in driver support than ati is for these notebooks. i would love the 4870's also but if they have the issues with the drivers like the whitebook did ill have wished i went nvidia

Will M17 survive after new M17x?
