Is it the Area-51 version? If so I don't know. If it's the newer version then yes, it will work.
-
Yes, you can. http://www.mxm-upgrade.com/m15x.html
You need the 2.1 version, found in clevo M860TU's.
Godspeed. -

Order 9800M GT heatsink from Alienware.
Also, update to the latest BIOS. -
You lose HDMI ability when doing that btw.

Thanks for the help guys, I did a bit more research and shopping around if I get a 9800m from rjtech is gonna run me 950$. I also wanna upgrade the cpu to a x9000 but this whole thing is roughly gonna cost me 1300+. I'm thinking I should just get a m11x lol.
-
Honestly you should stop spending money on the area 51 m15x. Take it from me a 9800m GT m15x user that it won't take you anywhere to dump anymore hundreds of dollars into it and you're much better off just saving towards a new PC. And I say this not because the Area-51 m15x is a bad laptop or an outdated one, but because you're starting to hit the threshold, meaning you're paying top dollar for very insignificant improvements, and thus ultimately wasting your money. The gains you'll see are very minimal. For instance 10,000 give or take is about what you'll score on the 3D mark test give or take, now you can pay extra dollars and go up a few hundred or down a few hundred, but again ultimately you're just going to be stuck in that range and it's ALOT OF cash just to move a few hundred up.
You're going to regret it quickly I promise you that. My system is a 9800m GT t9500 and I won't be adjusting any aspects of this lappie. -
But going from the 8600M -> GTX 260M is a huge leap for $390.
-
it'll cost more then 390 after you factor in the heatsink, but also you don't have to aim so high, you can go with the 3870 from Alienware directly and get that for 175. Plus the 260m doesn't allow you to use your HDMI port, the difference between a 260m and a 9800m is quite minimal as well.
-
Do this OP. -
Yeah I was told my alienware on the phone that I can get both the proper heatsink and the 3870 videocard for a little under 200.
That's simply just unbeatable. -

His point is incorrect for your case, but whatever. Of course someone with the 9800M GT is set for life, but an 8600M GT (there is no such thing as a GTS btw) is seriously scraping the bottom of the barrel. A 3870 is 2x as fast and would extend your machines gaming life by a couple years. At least long enough to see what's out by the end of the year, which is a much better time to by than right now.
-
Still, I love mine. IMO its the best looking computer AW ever put out... laptop or desktop. And as 1 of the 1st lappy's with switchable gfx, it is very very versatile.
Fix the hinge (with epoxy), and get a 3870 and you should be set for a long long time. -
Hello, i have a Alienware area-51 m15x with CPU - X9000 and GPU - 8800m GTX.
But having a lot of BSOD (normally when playing games). Should i change it to a 3870?
PS: I cant even install the latest drivers from NVIDIA. I got a BSOD as soon as i get on login screen.
Thanks. -

Well not planning to, actually gonna order a m11x soon when things for me get a little bit more settled.
-
Say, are you going to sell that m15x?
-
GallardosEggrollshop Notebook Evangelist
yes most likely I'm going to put it on ebay and craigslist for 900ish OBO. lol
-
Contact me about the price of that system I might buy it off of you. My brother loves my m15x so much we want to get a second one for him to use. I have a m17x R2, and still like my area-51 m15x, lol.
Will a 260m gtx work in my m15x?
