It might fit in a ODD caddy for HDD installation. The drive performance appears to be very slow, but it would probably OK for data storage.

Nope. 12.5mm is the tallest our ODD caddy's can take. Since the optical drives in our Alienwares are only 12.7mm tall to begin with, the ODD caddy's can only accommodate a 12.5mm tall drive in the allocated space. To mod your system, you would need to move the daughter board that contains the express54 card slot in order to give yourself the added 2.5mm of space. But that small shim up may be enough to misalign the express54 card and memory card slots on the daughter board with the corresponding slots on the side of the frame.

There seems to be more than enough space between the drive and the I/O daughterboard on the M18x, but I haven't measured it. That may not be the case on another model.

don't think there is enough space in the r3/r4, but don't quote me on that for sure.

Believe me. I've tried on a friend's R3. It's only about a mm too tall, but it's enough to where the daughter board doesn't fit right.

This HDD's also require move power than the other 5V rated ones. That might also be a problem. I've searched high and low for a AW user that has installed this HDD...to no avail

It might be a real hassle to make that work but it would be worth for storage :) better just to get an external one if that's what you want it for.

I don't get these thick 2.5 drives. Desktop owners would just get a 3.5 drive and laptop owners can't use it. So who are they for?

I believe they are for server racks,
I'd love if this baby would fit in my machine. I might be tempted to try down the road. I'd part with my optical drive for 2Tb of storage.
I thought that besides the obvious size constraints the slight increase in power requirement might be an issue...?
