    Just a quick question:

If I got the win 7 upgrade CD can I do a clean install on my computer?

I'm having a crap load of problem with my upgrade. Currently at idel my cpu is running at 45% usage on both cores and i just cant get it to go down. Then when i attempt to do task it jumps up to 100% and stays there for the majority of my session?

So unless i can find a solution for that then i think a clean install maybe the only answer?

Yes you can do a clean install of Windows 7 with the upgrade DVD. Check out the other threads on the topic that have been started.
I believe anyone on here would recommend that method over the upgrade option from Vista.

FYI, a clean install using an Upgrade Product Key will activate as long as a previous installation of Windows is still on the hard drive at the time of install. Using this on a blank hard drive or one erased by DBAN will cause activation to fail.

Make sure Stealth Mode is off. Also check your power profiles to make sure the CPU can max its performance to 100%.

I had a similar issue just after installation. In my case it magically disappeared after a good night sleep  When I checked in the resource monitor, it was the 'System Interrupts' process eating away 35% of the CPU constantly. I don't know exactly what made it disappear (something Win7? Indexing). A had some difficulties with the OSD not working proprely and installed it up to 4 times to get it finally right. Also, windows selects 'balanced power mode' instead of 'high performance'. I hope it goes away for you like it did on mine (although i'd like to know the cause).

EDIT: system is crawling to a halt again here too (issue got back on its own). So we're already with 2 people having the same issue.

Ok, to make things more complicated. Restored Win7 backup to the good state (clean install with no CPU eating and only driver software installed). Was good for an hour or so, now starts eating away again. The only thing changed is 2 windows updates. Anyone has a clue to what's causing this (I don't think this can be a virus since clean install)?

I know when I was overclocking my M17x, that at idle with CPUZ running, the CPU throttled down to around half speed and when I fired up a program to play a game or whatever, it would kick up to full speed again for best performance, but it is a feature help keep heat down and prolong battery life I assume. I haven't heard about this leak issue before on NBR from anyone else.

Ok, next step. There is 1 process WmiPrvSe that's eating constantly between 10 to 15% of the CPU. I suspended the program in resource monitor and then the system behaves normally again (01 to 02% CPU usage). when the program is resumed, service PlugPlay starts to eat at a constant rate of about 5% too. Strange thing is with the program suspended, the computer seems to operate normally. Any clues here? Your help is much appreciated.

Found It (stupid me) It was the dreaded 'stealth mode'. Apparently, when I cleaned the touch strip, it must have switched to this darn mode without notiying me. Just hit the button and now it says 'Full Power will be enabled'. To the other guy that has/had the same issue, just hit the stealth button again. Jeez, these guys at Alienware better make something to completely lock out this 'crawl a F1 computer to trycicle speed' mode. Learned my lesson now:wub: .
