Dell has released a support article of the common issues after upgrading to Win10. Nothing about the dead panels, though.

most likely due to it being more of an nvidia issue. so my guess is it's ok to go to win 10 just not the latest drivers.

OMG, there is so much to hate about Windows 10's extreme security flaws that has bubbled to the surface now that I'm not sure it can actually be considered "safe" for anyone to use Windows 10 on anything. It's just crazy some of the stuff they have done... I mean, literally INSANE security and privacy risks an order of magnitude we have never seen before.

I'm kind of sad about this, because there were a few things I kind of liked and was planning to stick with the OS, but now I think doing that would be a gigantic mistake.

I think most of it can be disabled with enough effort, but man... I'm scared for all of the noobs that will just install it and go running around naked, exposed, and at risk. Micro$haft should be absolutely ashamed at what they have done.

    Why I don't like Windows 10

You know this sort of thing is happening all over, and it is just going to get worse...

Check the date on the article. That's why. That article was published before the issues surfaced and before anyone at Dell even knew. What appears to be the offending driver was released on 7/29. GeForce 353.62 WHQL is where this appears to have started. What we don't know is if it affects all NVIDIA GPUs, only certain ones, only certain displays, only Windows 10, etc.

i've only seen laptops with stock 780Ms and aftermarket 970Ms get affected.

i'm waiting till i get my 120hz panel working before i attempted another round of testing.

    Hi guys,

As was told here i got same problem. I made fresh installation to windows 10 after an upgrade with partition format so i cant even move back to 8.1 now. Everything worked perfectly fine and looked good but i noticed that during work, suddenly my screen goes black with cursor in it. It didint happen after installation as everything went smoothly. I was able to ctrl+alt+del and log off/log in back to fix it but it occured few times after it even suddenly after watching some movies for few hours yesterday. I got worried, when reading that it caused some hardware failures for external monitors and i uninstalled geforce experience with latest updates few minutes ago. Windows update then downloaded some drivers but at this point i dont have my geforce card installed . Its visible in device manager as Geforce 770m but not installed.

Earlier after windows 10 installation i quickly installed geforce 353.63 drivers, the newest that were on the site.

I dont play games so i can use the 2nd integrated card. Is it best solution at this point and just dont install any drivers for geforce?

    Thanks

I will get mine on Thursday probably so I can check out if it works with my 980m. Maybe it's just your 970m that's just working incorrectly. Install your old card and see if it's the display or the card

i've been chatting to them and it may be due to them using the wrong modded INF file. so i gave them the correct INF for their driver and it should work now.

Other than the always intrusive Android, I have never disabled so many options in a software in my life.

Good job to M$ indeed, they managed to beat Android in the amount of holes to be filled.

Never thought I would see that day

Well this sounds pretty scary. I waited a few days before upgrading Windows 7 to Windows 10. I installed it the other day and I haven't had a single issue. All my old drivers are working fine with Windows 10. The only driver I updated so far was for the video cards. I have 353.62 installed and everything seems to be fine. It's been a few days now so I guess I should be good?

Sorry to take so long for coming here and give my experience about this matter but I wanted to come here with real testing done so here I am.
First of all, I think we should as we I mean community on this forums and all others are welcome as well to make some donation run to help Mr.Fox to buy new LCD or at least help him a little bit with the bill.
This is my idea to be clear Mr.Fox doesn't know about this till he reads my post. And knowing him a little bit I think he is not going to like the idea about this donation to him but anyway in my case I owe him more than a little donation, the uncountable times he helped me through all this years it is more than enough to don't even blink my eyes thinking about a donation for him, as me I know there's other folks who will be more than happy to help him too we are on our own as MS & NV are not willing to help.
I've been reading all the pages carefully and I wanted to verify the facts so I toss a coin and let the fate decide if my panels dies or lives. So I did the upgrade to Win10 + 353.62 drivers with Samsung panel (I think it is the same as brother Fox).

As you know to activate your Win 10 key (transform win8 or win8.1 key into win10 key) you need to do an update from an existing activated SO in your machine to be able to do so (at least that is the only way I've been able to perform a clean install.

Well this part Mr.Fox is aware of, the first time I got in win10 I noticed something really wrong my screen doesn't turn during cool boot, but as my pc seems to work I just typed the loging password and I was lucky enough to get it back working (I've been dealing with this issue since the beginning of my experience with Win 10).
The other thing I also noticed was that my monitor was running at a higher refresh rate than it should, 64 Hz to be more precise, I think this was caused to a lack of proper drivers so I just install 353.62 drivers and set the proper refresh rate to 60 Hz.
(I forgot to say that those steps were done after performing the clean install I was talking about, so at this time I've installed Win 10 twice, one for the key exchange and one for the clean installation).

As I always do I started to run some benchmarks and change whatever aspect of the new OS I know I will never be able to get use to it.

I am 100% that this OS perform lower in terms of performance as Win7 or Win8.1 as Mr.Fox has stated.
The good part or the bad part for this case it is that my panel is still working, it is for sure still doing weird stuff but he is still here, even with full bright turned on.
The only hardware difference between Mr.Fox's hardware and mine is that I'm using SLI980M as for software j95's inf mod.

Again I'm so sorry for what happened to the father of this community and I think we should help him to get out of this trouble.

i still wonder if having aftermarket GPUs is better because, for me at least, it's saying that my GPU is not compatible and therefore won't download the nvidia drivers?

That's what mine said. The 980s in my PC were incompatible, so I downloaded win10 manually. I installed 353.62 (after modding it) and win10 did not try to download any other Nvidia driver. So, possibly aftermarket upgrades that aren't approved are a good thing. ;)

    Cool, get the word out!

Out of the time I used win 10 it never downloaded the nvidia drivers, I had to manually install it though I did tell it to not to do driver updates.

I still doubt it is win 10 that is causing this LCD failure. We suggest using older drivers for the time being.

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Same thing happened to me today as well!!!!!!!!!!!

I had to take my laptop off of my HDMI cable which was connecting it to my LED LCD TV.. After doing so, I rebooted the laptop. 8 beeps followed; no post. I tried powering it off & on a few times, same loop!

Here is the kicker: I connected my HDMI back in, so that the laptop is now connectod to my LED LCD TV again, NO BEEPS, posts normally just as it did before!!!

I am positive if I reboot again without my HDMI connected, I will not be able to post.

    Win 10, newest Nvidia driver.

Guys, try connecting an external monitor & booting with it!! You may be able to get back inside!

I am deleting this driver now. WoW. Scared as hell!!!

DO NOT USE THE LATEST DRIVER ON ALIENWARE SYSTEMS FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!!! JUST DON'T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Edit: For the record, after connecting my HDMI cable to the laptop so it boots with both my TV and laptop's LCD running--the laptop LCD is FINE and in perfect working order. It did not burn out. This is odd. I hope it helps some of you guys out. I'm puzzled.

anyone tried older drivers????? we need to confirm that older drivers are A-OK to use.

For those who are using Win 10 switch to 353.38 hotfix or older to see if it fixes your problems.

After booting back in, GeForce Experience just crashes for me. Device manager>display adapters>880m properties>unable to roll back the driver. The option to do so is not there.

Can you please link a driver I should try out that will work with win 10?

I am afraid to reboot now; LoL.

353.38 hotfix is a no go. I installed it, then disconnected the HDMI from the laptop after enabling SLI and re-booting. 8 beeps again, no post.

Connected the HDMI cable again, no beeps, boots to desktop perfectly, SLI enabled. Both laptop LCD and my LED tv work fine. I cannot reboot the laptop without HDMI cable being connected to laptop and my TV. It will do the loop of 8 beeps, no post.

Interesting note: Before my first 8 beeps no post experience (on this matter today), I could NEVER restart & see my BIOS password prompt on my LED LCD TV. First, I had to enter my BIOS password on the AW18's LCD, and after doing so & pressing enter, then when it loads from that point, I could see the windows password screen on my LED LCD TV. Kind of 'cool' that I am now (for the first time ever) able to see the BIOS password prompt on my TV. NOT cool that I am unable to reboot the laptop without the HDMI cable connecting me to my TV; if I want to post that is.

Anyone have any bright solutions for this mess?

I don't understand... When the HDMI is connected both the TV & the laptop's LED LCD work just fine. If I unplug the HDMI cable, the laptop's LED LCD still works by it's self. How exactly is it busted now? WTF is causing this??? Someone needs to pay for our damages on this matter because we did NOTHING wrong here. Either the newest driver or Win 10 is causing all of this none-sense.

So what now, I need a new screen for my laptop???

Man, so sorry this happened. Connecting an external display to mini-DP and HDMI does not work on my AW18.

For the sake of documenting this problem for NVIDIA, please post these details in this thread: https://forums.geforce.com/default/...-drivers-killed-three-samsung-lcd-displays/1/

I'm currently running 353.62 driver & Win10 since 29th July, it is making me nervous all this talk of LCD screen failure, but my system is a bit further removed than the A17 and sli gaming laptops (the ones that have been affected so far) - I tell myself!

Thanks. Now we wait for a response.

I would call Alienware Support about getting a new LCD set to you and downgrade back to Windows 8.1 right away. Hopefully, the warranty will cover it. It may not since it is something you did rather than something they sold you, but they are usually very lenient and generous giving customers the benefit of doubt.

Windows 10 is an incomplete abortion that was NOT ready to be pooped onto the face of general public as a "FREE" upgrade.

@steviejones133 and @Scanner - I think you are both playing with fire by leaving Windows 10 on your systems. If you plan to continue rolling the dice, dropping back to an older driver is probably your safest bet.

so basically guys, those who have windows 10 now wich drivers do you have?(cant move to

8.1 anymore) as i wrote i am simply scared for any hardware failures. I uninstalled geforce 353.63 and all i have now are the drivers installed by windows update from 22th July. 10.19.version 13.5362

I didint have any black screens with that weird sound like from old pc's since i've done that, but its just one day, i also keep my tv disconnected from the laptop . Earlier with 353.63 all was installed ok and worked fine, i even watched some tv series for whole day on sunday and there were no issues but suddenly after many hours it crashed. Later on i read mr.fox thread and uninstalled geforce experience 363.63

I dont need to use nvidia as i think i use now intel hd 4600, dont play games and also go for few days out on friday so maybe new drivers can be released by then. I can leave it like it is or uninstall also windows drivers and keep nvidia disabled . Any suggestions what to do ?

Got geforce 770m on alienware 17

P.S I cant even believe we are discussing it and that there could be such problems from eaither microsoft or nvidia that cause so much problems for mr.fox and others

People that also have that Geoforce experience software should uninstall it. There is a conflict between win10 and Geoforce experience which can screw up your PC . Win10 tries to update latest Nvidia driver and if you have a different driver in Geoforce a problem will occur.

You might be OK with older drivers. @Rotary Heart is using my 345.20 desktop driver mod with Windows 10 and having no problems. It's hard to know whether or not it is isolated to the latest GeForce driver or something with Windows 10. The safest solution would be to drop back to Windows 8.1 for those that are able to do so. It does seem like 353.62 drivers are the common denominator for all of those who are reporting LCD failures and 8 beeps with Windows 10.

@Daniel1983 - If I had to read between the lines here I would hazard a guess that maybe, somehow, Windows 10 has selected your LCD TV as the default display.

The fact that you can see your laptop display while connected to the HDMI is a little puzzling.
I recently had a similar problem with a M17xR4 3D LCD panel, it would boot with a backlite, but no picture, if a HDMI or display port cable was inserted the laptop LCD would reappear and stay that way until the next reboot, even if the cable was removed the laptop screen still worked until the next reboot, then it reverted back to a backlite screen only with no picture.

It turned out to be a faulty LCD panel, the FIRST faulty 3D LCD panel I've come across in over 100 units.

Have you tried looking in NVidia control panel to determine if your laptop LCD is the default?
Grasping at straws I know but hey, at this point in time I think any suggestion that help the wounded M18x owners is a good thing
