I just installed Windows 7 RC Ultimate x64 to another partition and I am dual booting with Vista x64. I did a clean install to a separate partition and it had a reference driver for almost everything and seems to run very well, the few drivers it did not find it snagged in the first window update that ran. It even pulled a March 2009 ATI 3870 driver, I am impressed. After it updated and rebooted I checked task manager and it was fully booted up with a memory footprint of only 687M and the processor actually sat at 0% the whole time I watched. I will have to do some serious performance tests, but I will say that after playing with it for a couple of hours it seems to be a pretty slick OS that is much tighter than Vista, yeah for tighter code and better compilers.

So with the RC coming out on May 5th for the public, any moderators want to start the official Windows7 thread and miniHive?

WHen windows7 rc expires in may 2010, you have to buy windows 7 then reinstall. i think i read something about updating the rc to the final version... i could be wrong. And from what ive seen you can run vista drivers in windows 7 under vista compatibility mode or something..... then again i might be wrong again as i usually am

It will require a reinstall, that is what we are being told now. The RC will run for a year before you must purchase.

I did not install any drivers, none, zip... I have done a clean install to a new partition. It installed all but a couple of drivers, I then ran Windows Update and it installed 3 more drivers. I have checked the device manager and all are up and running. I then installed the Panda AV Windows 7 beta for AV by clicking on the Security Center message and going to the MS web site which recommends AV for Win 7.

And then I installed 3dmark06 and ran it. I am averaging a little over 100 marks HIGHER than under Vista x64 as installed by AW. I am a bit blown away that with the Microsoft WDDM/Generic drivers I am seeing higher scores....

Here are the results running under Windows XP SP3 Compatibility Mode which are about the same as what I was getting under Vista x64.

Am I missing something or the second glossy layer can be removed? It would be nice to get a matte screen...

I ran the tests without installing any drivers, I installed the OS and then ran Windows Update for the additional drivers. All drivers on this installation are MS WDDM/Generic.

Actually in the sticky there is that process of burning the drivers on a separate CD, and other stuff.

jdeclue's posts in this thread have all the info in it. The W7 on M17 thread doesn't have 3DMark screenshot or comparisons. This one says that everything pretty much worked right off the bat with minimal user input (plus one windows update that covered everything else), AND got better 3DMark scores with generic drivers.

Those are the news I want to hear with my M17.
