I am running windows 7 pro 64bit on an Alienware laptop. Everything has been great until last night, I was shutting off my laptop to remove the dvd player smartbay and inserted my other hdd smartbay which has Windows vista 32bit on it.

When I booted up my computer, I pressed F12 to enter the boot options, and selected my smart bays hdd, it started loading, gave me a bsod and than fixed some wierd settings, and than started to load up windows, also it started to finish a windows updat from the last time I had used the smart bay hdd.

After it loaded up, I changed a few settings, and than entered the shutdown.exe command from the start menus search box, because for some reason the shut down buttons havent worked on it for months.

I Tried to start windows 7 and it gave me the option to fix start up(recommanded) or just start windows. I choose to just start windows, and it ran the little animation, and than nothing. It is not frozen, because I can still see the animation moving, kinda like it's breathing, but it will just stay there, I left it there all night, and nothing.

I have tried since using the repair startup and after searching and trying to repair, it says that it cant fix it, and asks me if I want to send this information to microsoft...

I have tried fixboot, fixmbr, scanos, and when I do scan OS it only finds the windows installation that is on my C: drive, which is now my vista drive, I had to swap out the windows drive in my smart bay with the vista drive, and so now vista is C: and windows 7 is D:

I don't really know what else I can do, if there was a file I could delete off of windows and the repair startup would replace it, I have no idea why the loading screen just sits there, please someone help me. thank you.

If your OS was installed when the HDD was in the main caddy you might need to boot to windows dvd and select Repair. It is not enough to fix MBR. If you intend to swap HDDs in the nearest future, you might always run into this problem. I'd reinstall windows to the same directory without formatting partitions with minimal (if any) programs reinstall.
