Sorry if this has come up already, my wifi won't stay on long enough to do the search.

Just updated to Windows 8.1 and my wifi is working very inconsistently, I have to restart up to four times before it works.

I've uploaded the latest drivers from Intel and Dell, but no affect.

The websites sometimes freeze on 'resolving proxies.'

    Help!

...If I keep something downloading, my connection is much more stable. I have an Intel 6250 wifi card with the latest driver updated June 25, 2013 (15.10.0.12).

I did a complete clean re-install to Windows 8.1, and the problem persists. The wifi worked fine right up until the 8.1 install completed.

This might sound like an odd question, but is your windows still activated? When I swapped my wifi card for an AC model, my windows 8 actually deactivated....if that doesn't work, I would try opening up the back of your laptop and re positioning the card. If that doesn't work, uninstall the wifi card drivers fully, and re install (MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE DRIVERS ALREADY DOWNLOADED, if you have disk use the Dell provided ones if the latest don't work).

    :)

aha-I just saw that windows had de-registered. I had to call the codes in, but we'll see if my internet is more stable now that I'm official.

    Thanks!

...and one hour later still encountering the same problems. "Gateway not available" is what comes out of the wireless troubleshooting.

I'll try to open up the computer to see if the card is seated right, but again I had no problems with the wireless while I was upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 8, only once I upgraded to Windows 8.1.

Hopefully it fixes itself. Mine did :p But the windows deactivating was ridiculous!

I moved this to the main Alienware forum in hope that it might help users of other laptop models that are fighting WiFi problems with Windows 8/8.1 OS.

I see you've disabled IPv6, which is definitely a good first step when troubleshooting an intermittent connection w/ Gateway not found.

If you're still having issues, have you checked that there are no power savings effects enabled on the device? It will be in the device's properties in Device Manager.

Just a suggestion, i saw a great deal of improvement after i updated my routers firmware.

Linksys actually came out for a windows 8 specific upgrade for my router, and i think that helped a great. i hope that works for you.

Unfortunately, still experiencing the same symptoms this morning (Spoiler Alert: I lost connectivity while typing this post and had to restart twice). After a new startup, or after the computer has sat powered on for some time, internet stops without explanation. Other devices in the house have no issues. Fortunately, it seems to fix itself after one restart, vs. the five or six I needed earlier in the week.

    I've tried the following:
    - Used regedit to change my TCPIP6 DisabledComponent status to "ffffffff" so that it reads "0xffffffff"
    - Updated my router firmware. Again, other devices in the house have no issues.
    - De-selected the option under Device Manager to "Allow the computer to turn off this device"
    - My wireless card is an Intel Centrino (R) Advanced-N 6250 AGN
    - Driver is the latest, updated 6/25/2013, 15.10.0.12
    - The wireless worked fine prior to upgrading to Windows 8.1, so I am ruling out a loose wire or physical problem for the moment.
    - Windows internet troubleshooting comes back with varying causes of the problem, from blaming the internet router, the DNS server, or domain host.
    - downloads seem to keep the connection up, so once I start a download (from Steam in this case) I have not lost connectivity. Only after periods of idle time or when the computer is shut down.

For everyone who has intel 6235 card. Download 15.5.6.48 which you can find it on swupdate windows 8. Every driver after that didnt work properly and dont let windows update, update your wifi card.

Another thing to try is to set up a manual IP for the computer on the router.

Beyond that, I'm really stumped. You could try downgrading your drivers to something else, maybe the first one that supports 8.1?

Could you post a screenshot or two of the Advanced tab when you open the wireless card in the Device Manager? Maybe I'll be able to pick something out from there.

Not sure if it will work with Windows 8.1, but I found many Windows 7 drivers, some quite old Windows 7 drivers, worked far better for me with Windows 8 than new drivers that are supposedly designed specifically for Windows 8. Agree with not letting Windows Update install drivers. That seldom turns out well for me regardless of which version of Windows.

More than a week on, I simply can't believe that I am still having trouble. I've ruled out router, router firmware, provider connectivity, power, loose power to wifi card, you name it.

Intel does have some data on their website that they are updating their cards drivers for windows 8.1, but the 6250 card isn't included. Here's hoping.

Have you already tried using Windows 7 drivers for Windows 8.1?

I've had issues with this in the past, stick with the Dell OEM Wifi drivers, do no mess with the Intel ones as they seems to not be optimized for all system types. Also please take a screen shot of your network adapters in device manager, in some cases other adapters could be creating a false positive, which in turn interrupting your Wifi signal. Instead of restarting your system just disable your Wifi adapter and re-enable it, that should kick it back on.

One last thing, check in your power options settings and go to advanced to verify that your wireless adapter is set to maximum performance. control panel>hardware and sound>power options>edit plan settings>change advanced power settings
