Nice! Thank you for sharing. That was a really nasty thing to do to customers. Glad they fixed it.

I went ahead and booted into Windows 8.1 to install the update. First time I had chosen to use Windows 8 for a few minutes instead of Windows 7 since October 24, LOL.

Anyone else seeing this issue with Windows 8.1? Look at the top row of tiles in the first image. If I choose the "customize" option (right click) so the tile group name editor comes up, then cancel out they return to normal. Really strange. It may have been like this all along. I almost never use the Modern UI because I hate the way it looks, but I never noticed until after the update was applied.

Fox, that is not normal... it almost seems like a 3rd party app you installed is causing some sort of glitch...

That wouldn't surprise me. I can't accept Windows 8/8.1 in the form provided by Micro$lop so I have tons of tweaks in place to make it a palatable OS. I think I will just ignore it since I ascribe zero value to the existence that part of the OS anyway. The desktop is normal, so it's not a big deal. The charms bar has been made inaccessible through mouse movement, so I don't have to worry about ending up there by accident due to its spastic behavior. I did a clean install of 8.1 to my mSATA on 10/17 and have used it less than 10 hours since then. I never noticed it until after the update was applied, but it may have been like that before the update.

Unfortunately, there is no way to completely remove it and the Metro UI as far as I know. It is still accessible with Win+C, but you can make it to where it stays out of your way most of the time. I wish there was a way to "uninstall" all Metro features and enable full Aero transparency as native features. The fact that Micro$lop stripped out so much UI customization also makes it a pathetic operating system in many ways.

There is an option in Stardock Start8 to seriously cripple the Charms bar as well at disable all desktop "hot corners." There are also registry tweaks you can use to disable the "Charms hinting" idiocy.

If your Synaptics driver has an option for edge swipes, disabling that also helps.
