Hi everyone, I just bought an m15x before I moved into college. Thus far, I love it, but I do have a couple questions that the members of this forum should find interesting.

    1) What are standard temperatures/worry levels for my GPU and CPU? I downloaded and installed Rivatuner and Notebook Hardware Control, and my computer tends to idle at GPU = 53-57 and CPU = 47-51 degrees Celsius. I have an Nvidia GeForce 8700, and I'm looking at buying a Zalman NC 2000 to help matters.

    2) The only game I've installed to this point is Unreal Tournament 3, and it performs at a fantastic level. However, it can get pretty hot, and I've had it freeze up and necessitate a forced shutdown. However, it does this at around 85-90 degrees Celsius, which seems to be much lower than the threshold. Any ideas why this is happening?

    3) One more off-topic thing: The keyboard on this computer is annoying. If this is a problem solely limited to my keyboard, then you can ignore this. If not, then can anyone offer some solutions? What I mean by annoying is that it doesn't seem responsive to fast typing in that it often has trouble processing fast typing.

Many thanks in advance and glad to be a part of this forum,

    Krishen

thats pretty hot for the 8700. my 8800 idles at 53 - 55 and goes upto 88 when playing games. the 8700 is suppose to run cooler than that when playing games.

keyboard unresponsiveness is a known issue and being worked on. the patch to fix the issue got delayed because of a hurricane in florida.

My 8800 idles at 74C.... CPU idles at 48C and 45C with x34 installed. I feel like my fans are hardly running at all. I posted in AW forums and Warner told me those temps are fine? Any thoughts?

update your drivers to 177.83 so your card can downclock while idle. it will lower your idle temps by 20 degrees. Either that or idle in stealth mode.

Argh, I got owned by Vista. I had typed quite a lot for this post before it shut itself down for an update.

Anywho, the GPU temperatures seem fine, though I would take further precautions by either rising the m15x to improve airflow below somehow or buying a notebook cooler. The notebook cooler should cool it down at least 3-4 degrees Celsius on both the GPU and the CPU.

Like what exiled said, the patch for the keyboard responsiveness is being worked on and I am currently receiving updates from Roswell (via email) frequently about their progress on it. You may find these email posted on either of these threads:

I'll update you personally via PM when I receive further news on the patch.

Don't blame Vista for the settings you choose to use. You can get rid of auto update, and manually update your self. I've never encountered that problem before.

Well, it was actually the first time it decided to restart the computer without asking me first. I had no idea it was updating itself and it didn't prompt me first if I wanted to restart. I was just a bit surprised and a little frustrated that I had to retype everything over again.

Putting that aside, I believe the patch for the keyboard responsiveness should be available soon, so I wouldn't be too worried about that.

I'm actually hoping the responsiveness can be altered at will. Like say maybe users can choose a numerical sensitivity for the keyboard? I don't know. It's better if they just focus on fixing it, but that would be nice.

the plastic cover around the keyboard will start to warp. the plastic itself is the worse kind you will find on laptop. Poor quality + highest price = extreme profit margin (aka industry standard)

My plastic cover around the keyboard at the outer edge towards the AlienFX lighting started warping due to extreme heat being generated. To make matters worse i didn't even play games.

Watch out for yours and take out warranty to a further of 3 years or more. You will need it. Buying warranty to back up a product is a very bad sign of things to come.

If Alienware warranty is like a new car warranty they may try to wriggle out of it with the term "Wear and tear". The plastic not withstanding extreme heat being generated by your m15x is debatable because of variable circumstances.

To protect myself financially, I was forced to upgrade to an m17x because the quality of the m15x is not worth mentioning in the same light as cow dung.

That's... odd. I don't recall ever hearing of plastic warping due to heat...

It does happen, but you'd need a lot of heat to warp plastic this thick.

    Edit: Yay, post 100.

What is the average CPU temp for the 2.33GHz CPU on the m9750? I seem to average around 70 C
