I am now looking to upgrade from my hefty 5.4 kilogramme area51m7700 and replace it with something else. I am currently on the 3.0ghz P4 with 2Gigs of RAM and have been looking at the Core 2 2.0Ghz with 2 Gig of RAM. Is there a noted performance difference between the 2 laptops and is it REALLY worth upgrading in your expert opinions.
Cheers

Right now is not a good idea, as the new x15 and x17 models get released within the next month or so. The performace of those models with the 8800m cards will outperform the current dual 8700M... and also if you 'do' want a M9750 model... you should wait anyway, as the prices of them will drop once the x15 and 17 ones are released (a month or 2 isn't that long to wait!).
-
Well the processor will be a hell of a lot faster, but I dunno if it justifies an upgrade. If your in the market for a new computer I would wait for the 17x to come out or the m9750 to offer the 8800m, which will be soon. If you need a computer NOW than you can't go wrong with getting an m9750 because it is upgradable. You'll just be paying the price of the 8800m later. If you look at my signature than you will see a computer with those specs you are looking for. Compare 3dMark06 scores and thats your answer as to how much faster. It sounds like your looking for a lighter computer aswell and the m9750 we know is one of or the lightest gaming computer out there and is only 1.5" thick. We do not know the dimensions of the m17x. It will however offer the "Extreme" Intel Core 2 Duos and Three Hard Drive bays instead of two, but I like my m9750's look and there is not much difference. I think the m17x will be heavier, but I could be wrong. The best cards right now other than the 8800m are two 7950s. The 8700s are worthless imo. Thats just my oppinion, but I hope it helps. I am probably going to get flamed by someone for saying the m9750 is a waste of money right now, but the prices were significantly lowered.

The m9750 is a very poor buy right now. Buy an 8800M GTX machine today from Sager or wait for the new Alienwares. Check out the NP5792.

As a former m7700 owner I think you sort of missed the boat on the m9750 the price for the individual components sort of went up in cost. The machine I just bought for $2499 is now $2690. Not to much but when you're thinking about old technology, it is quite-a-bit.
I loved my m7700, if it didn't die I would be still using it. But I told myself that I would never pay $3800+ for a notebook or buy a notebook the size of the m7700. This is why I choose not to wait for the m17x (starting at 3k) or get a sager/clevo, bigger than the m7700. The m9750 gives me the ability to play all the newest games at almost the highest quality and still not pay too much.
If you do go with the m9750 get the 1gb ram option, buy your memory from newegg. -
fair enough comment on the m17x however i personally think it looks fugly and i would not want to be spending $3k+ on a laptop. I will prob be flamed for this but the reason i'm looking at another Alienware is cause of brand loyalty i guess, already owned an Aurora desktop before my notebook and now as i have a PS3 games are not the highest priority so GFX is not THAT important more so performance for the likes of transcoding, watching movies, sometimes cubase stuff and feeding the movies through the DVI-D to my Kuro screen.
-
Well for $2450 you can get the computer in my signature or a Sager with the single 8800m.
-
i forgot to mention that i'm uk. The Sager looks sublime and seriously sexy piece of kit but by the looks of it no distributors in the UK or any GBP for the NP5792. Any other manufacturers using the Clevo M570RU

I used to have the 7700 and that thing was hot as heck. I love my 9750 and with the upgrade to the 8800 gtx's I would say that it would be an awesome upgrade for you
-
yes the m7700 was suprisingly hot actually and i phoned Alienware when first purchasing the notebook to see if this was meant to be. Is the m9750 any quieter too?
The evesham is still £2k although VERY nice unfortunately i wanted to be looking at sub £1.5 :S
Anyone got an average price of a 2nd hand m7700 with EVERYTHING still included like the original box, still got the protective wrap on the glossy front and under the screen etc etc. -
yes the m9750 is very quiet compared to the loud ass m7700. You only hear the air pushing through the system and not the 6 fans blowing at max speed 90% of the time, like the m7700.
-
Plus if I remember the vid card for the 7700 was under the left palm and I got 3rd degree burns sometimes when i played
-
lol yes admitedly it does get seriously hot and was not overly portable either. So its either go for something out of date tomorrow and spend a bit less now for the m9750 or pay between the teeth for a next gen santa rosa. Btw is there anything else i should look at in terms of same spec as 9750 for same price??
-
Remember that it is the 8800M that will make all the difference in gaming performance-not the Santa Rosa CPU. Wait and see if the m9750 can accept the 8800M graphics card.
-
it can trust me , even though reviews are showing the SLI 7950GTX are killing the single 8800
-
Shiznit i think that with the m15x out friday i may opt for the smaller screen as already have a plasma now for all the movies and opt for this baby.Heres hoping i can afford the bugger in the UK
-
-
think they call it sarcasm
-
-
I just love my machine...not really getting hot and is relatively quiet.
-
Dude you just dug up the thread from the dead. Let it live in peace
Worth an Upgrade M7700 to M9750
