I've already emailed AW but we all know what they're like. It definetely didn't sound like a response from someone very knowledgeable, it sounded more like a response from someone with a guide of what to say (the spelling and grammar was poor).

However in the response I did get they said that any modification to the settings or cooling system itself will void my warranty.

What would you guys say? Is there any official word on it from a higher up authority?

it will be voided as long as it is in there ....

Remove the copper mod and the system's warranty will not be voided.....and i highly do not recommend next time you are talking to them that you mention you did it ;)

Please be aware any modification made by the user causing damage to the system will void its warranty. Also, we suggest in order to obtain full support on any issues that may arise, the system should be in its original state.

    Thank you.

The first rule about copper mods is we don't talk about copper mods?

    Correct

You can modify the system but if the system is damaged and it is caused by YOU , your warranty is voided. That is coming from reps them self.

    So go for it.

But I do think its strange that its the only fix as of now ;)

YES im looking @ you Armando

What would be super cool, is if we could get some sort of inkling of a clue as to whether or not someone in Alienware has actually looked at/performed/tested or otherwise investigated the alleged aforementioned copper mod fix. OR If we could get some sort of inkling of a clue as to whether or not anyone who works with Alienware who may actually own the system themselves has actually experienced the same issue. That would be super cool, but I'm not holding my breath as anything anyone who works with them would say to that affect would potentially be considered as an admission that something may be wrong with the system design.

While they would not want to do that , they are not the ones who designed this.

AW did not sell this laptop as soon as it was release(correct me if I'm wrong)
And even if they did, they did not design it Flextronics did. They (Flextronics) are the ones at fault in this case. Alienware is at fault for not pressuring Flextronics to fix the design flaw and continuing to sell the system ( like the m15x situation  ) but nothing other then those other 2 things. Crappy as it may be ...

I didn't use the email address linked with my order. ;) And I mentioned nothing related to my personal laptop. I didn't even mention my specs, although obviously I made it clear that I have a quad.

The trouble is, my father doesn't want to let me do it on a system that's under a month old and cost £1,600. He seems to think "if it isn't broke, don't fix it." He wants official word from AW that this IS what is causing the stuttering (i.e. the northbridge) and that copper modding it will fix it, he wants me to log whenever the stuttering happens to prove it (lol) and he doesn't want to do it as he's worried of causing damage to it. (Yes, I've told him that only a moron would manage to screw up applying non-conductive thermal paste and putting the fan back on, but he's still cautious.)

If it wasn't for my father holding me back I'd already have done it.

@EvilCorsair. Your father's a smart man, I'm holding out hope myself that the issue can be resolved through the warranty. In the interim, I just deal with it. It seems to work itself out after an hour or so of operation (or a couple reboots).

Mine fixes itself after one reboot and doesn't happen often. The problem is when it happens IN GAME, either in a game that I can't alt+tab out of or it will close completely, or a game where I'm in the middle of something.

I'm wary myself, but it does seem near impossible to damage the system with a piece of copper and a tube of non-conductive thermal paste.

I just wish Alienware would just admit that the M17 has this bloody problem and provide their own fix for it, even if it was just this copper mod. They are in a way fools, in my opinion, for not offering it, as the copper mod has been proven an effective method.
