...order the 1gb option on the m15x, then buy 4gb of memory at best buy and install it myself? Can I even do that? And if so, are there specific specifications I should look for.

you'll save at least 200 bucks. so yes, definitely cheaper and smarter. i did it too.
you'll want to look for SO-DIMM DDR2 RAM with 667mhz clock speed. brand-wise, go for someone with good warranty, like kingston or corsair, or crucial or ocz or whatever. it's all the same factory in taiwan anyway. to make sure, i'd call some one from AW and ask if the model's compatible with the m15x.
installing's a piece of cake, simply unscrew the back plate, pop out the old ones, slot in the new ones, close up and you're good to go. basically fool-proof. -
Even I can change ram. Good places to order ram are
newegg.com
crucial.com
Both are probably cheaper than best buy. Crucial has instructions on how to do it and also a ram checker to guarantee the ram is compatible. -
So you can't install ddr2-800 in the m15x for a speed boost?
-
well, the mobo can only handle 667mhz speed. if you install 800mhz RAM, it downclocks to 667mhz, but the latency goes down. however, that is barely noticable, so i don't think it's worth the price.

Frys.com is a good place also.
Would it be cheaper to...
