Hmmm.. hey thanks for that, it really sums things up, do i install vista ultimate like how i would normally do? or are there any turtorials specifically for the alienware m17?
And thanks for the swift reply! :-D -
Why do you want to move from Home Premium (Or do you have Home Basic?) to Ultimate?
There is almost no advantage - most people have no use for the extra features of Ultimate, and even if you do need one of those features, there are lots of free, third party applications that will do the same task.
Let us also remember that Ultimate is slightly slower because it has a larger overhead.
The only reason I could see for getting Ultimate is BitLocker, and let's be serious... no one is using BitLocker on a gaming rig. -
Hey thanks, yeh i have Windows Vista Home premium x64. Would that be good enough for gaming? will it have the same performance as windows Vista Ultimate? i think ill stick with the premium, i dont really need the other apps, but thanks anyway you have all been great!
Thanks -
Home Premium is better suited for gaming than Ultimate.

The basic difference is Ultimate combines some of the features of Home premium with some of the features of Buisness.
There are some other differences, but as mantioned above, to get all the details you can visit MS.
Upgrading to Ultimate will add nothing to your gaming experience. -
Hello TalhaCruise i see uve got your Alienware m17, when i got my m15x i jus moved it onto ultimate x64 mainly due to restriction with x86 Premium, your better off staying with 64 bit premium since thats what it came with because there really arnt that many advantages at all with ultimate.
Happy Gaming!! -
To the OP: Enough said. Unless you want to fork up wasted money buying Ultimate is the right decision for you.
(I think the answer to your original post is... invest money on upgrading the hardware of your computer. home premium is already perfect for gaming) -
If you are going to purchase the OS then I would recommend to wait for another 9-12months and Win7 will hit the markets by that time... for this 1 year you can download Win7 Release Candidate from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/download.aspx for FREE and evaluate it for free till June 1, 2010

If you want to engage in remote desktop connection sessions with another computer Windows Vista Home Premium cannot be the host client. XP PRO and Vista Ultimate must be installed on either the host or the client I believe. Of course, Server 2003 and 2008 will also run this application
-
remote desktop on a premium can make a connection to another business, enterprise or ultimate vista machine but it can never connect to a premium

The Ultimate edition of anything is always the best. Thats why its the Ultimate!!

Ultimate! -
Well there are several reason to move from home to ultimate. However, the biggest reason would have no effect on gaming. Home version is geared towards people who have no networked infrastructure such as window domain servers. If you have a home network that consist of a modem and router, you would get no benefit from switching to ultimate. The only user difference is home version does not support Bitlocker, Aero, complete PC backup, no domain support, and I believe no Windows media center. But if you do not work in a domain and do not need user authentication, it would make no since to switch over to ultimate. As long as you have the 64 bit version so you can get access more then 3.2 gigs of ram your fine.
I actually have Microsoft Certifications for Vista, MCTS and MCTIP.
SO you can trust my opinion, you would be wasting your money and time if your are not concern with the key points mentioned above. I would lastly suggest waiting for the release of Windows 7 or downloading the RC from M$. WIndows7 is 100% better then vista in so many ways its ridicules. For example, I have 6gig of ram on my desktop, with vista running my ram stayed about 40-44% in use. Booting into WIndows7, ram usage is 20-26%. Please its a lot quicker and slicker looking. -
Hey guys thanks for all your opinions, im sure this will help others too, sure cant wait for the official windows 7 release :-D
Thanks for everything. -
Might want to make sure they have fixed the 3870 crossfire issue with the latest W7 rc1.
also, one of the reasons I don't use W7 is because some programs won't work.
Specifically, for me, Window Blinds is not compatible with W7.
It's worth a shot because W7 is an improvement though. -
The main difference in Ultimate vs Premium
