I know this is a laptop forum. But this can apply to laptops as well I recently bought an alienware x51 desktop. I replaced the hdd with an ssd and change the mode to legacy I believe. Installed both windows 7 and 8 on it. Works awesome except 4/5 boots, the computer will stay at a black screen before the windows spinning logo or the alienware logo. Not the post, it passes it all the time the one right after it. What causes this? Is it a bad ssd or a boot issue ? Or do I need to change the bios settings back to the original settings?

It's not likely to be the BIOS settings. I use Legacy boot for Windows 7/8.1 dual boot on the M18xR2 and the Alienware 18.

It is either something with the drive, the OS installation or a driver causing the freeze while the OS is loading. My guess is a driver is causing it. Have you checked in the Windows Event Viewer to see if there is a tell-tale event that corresponds with the date/time when the problem is observed? You can also use MSCONFIG to disable all startup items to see if the problem goes away.

the only thing that the event viewer shows wrong is the network card isnt connected to the internet, which it isnt due to running off of wifi. the only driver problem i have is high definition audio is giving me a code 10, but sound works properly.... this sucks. Should I reinstall windows?

It might not hurt. Install Windows 7 first and see if everything goes well.

Yes you can read the smart data like a regular HDD, sometimes the manufacturer of the drive has software to do more work.
