    Hi guys,

Well finally my X9100 arrived today from Shirley and Im happy as Larry!

I would like to clock it to a nice safe level like 3.4ghz without going through tech hell. Ive never tried to clock anything before and I did a little research into the concept of overclocking and why its possible.
I understand I need to download Z-factors BIOS but where can I get it and can I just burn it to disk and install it? then use setFSB to adjust clocks?

    Any help is appreciated,

    thanks!

i would use a usb stick to flash the bios much more relieable.

Flash it then increase mutli in .5 steps making sure you are very careful and bench at each step then keep raising until you start to BSOD while benching, then use setfsb to try and get a litte higher

    Hi Pmanuk,

Firstly, So it can be flashed by DVD? I cant find my USB stick at the minute!! also z-factors guide for flashing using a USB stick looks like a lot of work.

Also, when you say increase multi in .5 steps....using which tool?

I have some ideas for cracking onwards but Im just trying to clarify.

ps, have you received your new rig yet?

    Hi frozenarticguy,

yes it finally arrived and Jesus it feels awesome in games all-round. The games are much smoother and dont stutter at all.
I replaced that pad near the CPU with thermal paste which IMHO is not a pad at all but lots of the thermal paste as it just crumbled in my hand like plasticine!
How did you clock your CPU? do you have to use z-factors BIOS? and can I just burn it and install it that way?

(hope your having fun with your new pooch.....hardly a pooch...a bull-mastiff!)

Yes I used Z Factors BIOS and SetFSB but I went back to the new AW Bios and kinda regret it. Was fun to OC. There is a way to make a bootable usb stick on the OCZ link but for some reason I can't get mine to go, maybe you'll have better luck. Yeah we got an American Mastiff and already the is spoiled as hell. Cool dog though, smart as a whip

Overclocking aside is Z factors BIOS as stable as Alienwares new BIOS?

    thanks.

Yeah I've had no problems with either one of them. Other than being able to oc, you don't get the AW head when booting up. Give it a try, works awesome!

    Hey Tony,

Im picking up my new rig tomorrow from the OEM in person :)

I really dont reccomend flashing from a disk, buy a new usb stick if you have to :p

When you flash with Z's bios there is an option in the bios to overclock the multiplyer in .5 increments

I found that after a week or so of having my qx9300 installed the AS5 burnt in and i was able to get a little more out of the cpu so take it slow and gradually go up and up

You have my email address if you want/need any points in the right direction mate

Oh cheers mate! thats very kind of you and nice to know I can PM you if I need some assistance.
I will find the USB stick over the weekend and do it that way....its nice to know that you can do it all in the BIOS.
I just got a 3DMark06 score of 13749 @1280x1024 so am happy at the 1000 point increase as frozenarticguy predicted.

As I will be in the market for a new PC myself over the next 6 months do keep us posted about your new system and above all; good luck with it and enjoy it.

    Thanks.

I hit about 12500 with my CPU at P8400 at 2.65, so I'd guess he was somewhere around there.
@ Tony - let me know if you still need the BIOS; I have a copy of it, and have flashed my M17 in prep for my X9100 so would be happy to help you, Im also happy to help with overclocking :) What thermal paste are you using? AS5, Tuniq, OCZ Freeze?

    Hi Alex,

Firstly thanks for the offer and yes I would like a copy of the BIOS if available but no rush for it.

With the T9600 I think I was scoring around 12500....I dont remember exactly because it kept going up and down depending on which OS Vista or windows 7. The lowest I had was 11500 approx and the highest was just over 13000.
I read that rather excellent guide for a review of 80 thermal pastes and decided to try something different to what anybody had suggested.
    I chose Thermaltake TG2 and check out these temps just taken 20 mins ago after a mad 2 hour gaming session;

I find the processor runs a lot cooler and games feel so much better Im so happy with it.

    Oh and here is my stock 3DMark06 score as a screenie;

Lets say I overclocked to a nice safe figure like 3.4ghz then what score can I expect roughly in 3DMark06?

    thanks guys.

you can change the multiplyer in the bios but not the fsb, for that its best to use setfsb

Im going to pickup my machine about 11ish :)

nice to be able to go and get a coffee with the MD of the company who sell em :)

    Tony - here's one I made earlier :D
    http://go.notebookreview.com/?id=52....com/files/263822862/usbdisccontents.zip.html

Thats the contents of ZFactor's Bios update CD ISO which didnt work for me on B14, combine with the contents of a bootable USB stick. Basically when you follow his guide and use the HP USB Bootable programme, it creates some bootable files, I unhid those and copied them as well, so if you format a USB stick in fat32, and then copy everything in this folder you should be good to go.

If it doesn't like the non-original boot files, follow Z-Factors USB Bootable guide; and then copy the files from this ZIP across, but when it asks to overwrite some identical files say no, as you want to make your own bootfiles; keep them, but use everything else :)

Then when you boot your M17, hammer F10 as soon as the machine is switching on, and choose your USB stick (usually shows as USB HDD) out of the list that appears :)

Thanks Alex for the BIOS, I will download it when I return from work and I shall begin. its appreciated.
I think looking at Marvies post 15000 would be a very good score so I know what to aim for(thanks Marvie)

Dont guys....your making me laugh! I wont be getting anywhere near up there with my limited technical knowhow but it is nice to have a benchmark or two.

I notice from your link Mandrake that E-wrecked drivers were being used....I may look at these myself if they work well with Windows 7 that is.

Thanks for the info guys and I will post back once I get cracking!

It's more time consuming than anything. If you keep at it you should be able to at least hit 15K.

use zfactor's bios and pump the multiplier to 12x which should bring you to 3.33ghz and then raise your fsb using setfsb in theoverclocking thread. most x9100's top out at 3.57ghz. some maybe more some maybe less. with this you should hit 15,300 with stock gpu's and heavy optimized OS.

USE 8.57-8.10 to push you gpu's.

    Hi,

gunna carry on with this tomorrow or over the weekend as Im busy for the next day or so and want to get this right.

Just one question PMANUK.....whats the first impressions of your new system and does it compare to an Alienware unboxing....including peripherals and packaging?
Oh OK, one more question; why not Windows 7? It really optimizes these sort of notebooks!

    thanks.

Oh....just for you Mandrake(an extract of an E-mail from Shirley...you was right about where he resides)

    Dear tonytoff,

I am sorry about the delay. There are something wrong with EMSin China late July. Actually, I live in the US, but most my products are shipped from China.
Thanks for your business. If you have any question or problem about this item, please feel free to contact me.

I felt guilty about having a moan about where he shipped from so I grew some balls and E-mailed him in person....this is after Ive received my X9100 btw.
