hey guys, wanted to share my experience. this is concerning an m17x r2, i bought it from a fellow NBR'er and it had no warranty on it, since the warranty expired.
So at first i just messaged a regular sales rep to see if i can get a warranty, gave him the service tag... etc etc, he said no, not possible since the warranty already expired. So i tried again messaging another, said the same thing.
After that i emailed a rep i was "friendly" with, since he actually knew what he was talking about. i emailed him simply asking if i could ever get another warranty, (and i stressed the part that the warranty already expired) and he emailed me back saying yes, it indeed is possible, he gave me a "dell warranty" number to call, and so i did, and after an hour of explaining, the lady gave me a quote of how much it costs and said i can! although I didnt get it simply because my machine is working perfectly right now, and on top of that i dont have the money. But i did want to see if its possible, and it IS.
if i ever do get a problem on my machine, ill do the same thing and get a warranty.

Great, good to know. Was there any discussion of cost?
-
-
how long has the warranty been expired ?
-
oh for like 4 months...? somewhere around there.
-
that much for a warranty!?
you can just purchase a new one.
lol. -
-
Hmm...I dunno. $870/3 years = $290 per year...which is about the average cost of a repair. Unless you aren't comfortable with opening things up and fixing it yourself, I think I'd keep the money and take my chances. The only way I'd go for that was if this machine was a critical piece of my job, and time really is money.

That's way too overpriced for warranty.
I wonder if you could go through Square Trade instead? Would be way cheaper. -
-
btw heres the number to call for the dell warranty:
800-247-4618 -
if it ever does go wrong then you can buy a new one m8... and you never know you might pick up the R3 or even an R4 for that money 3 years down the line.. i think you would be crazy to buy that warranty
-
its all different for each person, but wait! i called in yesterday again to see if i can get a dell warranty... so they took me through the process again, the outcome was that this time i got an even cheaper quote, i got complete care 3 yrs, for 540.00$
im telling u just pull their leg and they will drop the price! -
update: i talked to a new rep 2 days ago and after some haggling, they gave me a quote for three years on basic for 320$$
-
all that price changes, depending on when and who you call should be illegal...
if you had gone for the first quote of around $800, and then I told you I got the same for $300, you'd feel robbed, conned and ripped off... -
btw this is the price i got for basic, the first one was for premium. the start of basic for three years was 600$ -
but my point is, if two people are sold the same thing, at different prices, isn't one of them being ripped off?
-
edit: you might like the book The Jungle lol, im reading that in one of my classes, its pretty interesting. -
To think a company will offer a single price for every customer is just naive. I can guarantee you that if you are a fortune 500 company buying x amount of Dell systems, those systems may see a discount due to the volume and the promise of future deals with the company. If you are buying a single system, you have very little negotiating power as the probability of you buying another system to offset the margin is slim to none in the near future. -
You would be able to get a new laptop for that price, since most M15x are going for those prices but what if you're configuration is worth 3,000-5,000+ then its better to extend the warranty then to buy a extremely lower spec model for the same price as your warranty.
To me personally, the 540 would of been okay if I never knew about a lower price, since 1 - it is out of warranty 2 - almost every company never gives extended warranty after the warranty has expired, trust me I've tried with several companies, so you'd be paying extra to be covered for an extra 3 years out of warranty period.
Everyone's subject to their own opinions, but to me that seems kind of fair.
EDIT: I think basic warranty applies to being NBD and advanced is the accidental care, does that sound about right? -
You Still can get a Warranty after one expired!
