    hi all

i dont mean the black or silver chasis.
ive seen one that looks thin with the glass on the screen cover from end to end and another that has them mean looking lights at the front and a bit thicker.

does anyone know why this is ??

    thank you
    mike

The square one is the first model. It has been replaced by the mean looking one.

I take it you never seen the older one before. It doesn't matter because you can't buy it new anyway. So you got the right one, congrats!

    lol
whats Santa Rosa and Montevina j/k

its a bit odd that alienware would use a previous name for new laptop.
ive never heard them do this before, thats what was bugging me.

They still should of have changed the name. Especially with the big change in how it's ordered, supported and manufactured. Plus does it really have anything in common with the old m17x? Quanta maybe? Anything else?

The name is a bit confusing. I'm sure Dell did it to help ease the transition of Alienware into the Dell distribution system by linking it to a past model (not the most popular past model, but that's what they get for having three AW 17" laptops at the same time competing with the XPS 17"). Maybe "M17x[ps]" would have been better?

The frist gen of M17x the two gpu where on the right hand side above the keypad and the cpu is on the left hand side when you type. The fans on the laptop where facing up. Airflow was drawn from the top of the laptop then exit out from the rear. There was also airflow from the bottem. Cleaning is a Pain in the rear. I have to pop the Keyboard out to get to the cpu and use can of air to blow it out. GPU I just pull them out and flip upside down then use can of air.

The new M17X has the grapics cards on the right and left side to premote better cooling. The cpu and intergraded gpu are in the Center becuse they use less power and run cooler.

    Also the Older

    i hope you're joking.

actually, the naming scheme is quite easy. the first letter is an "m" for "mobile", and is either lowercase for Santa Rosa-based systems, or uppercase for Montevina-based systems. then comes the screen diameter in inches, and then, if the system uses Nvidia GPUs, a lowercase "x" (if the system uses ATI cards, nothing). elementary, my dear watson.

Under that naming convention the names will never change.

    A. Yes, joking.
    B. Diagonal, not diameter. They don't have round screens on the current models.

That would have been interesting tough. I guess since everthing is new for the new computer, just to show that they are still AW not not just a new Dell, they kept the naming. I believe if AW was producing this machine by themselves, they would have had a new name.

ive just ordered the new M17x
and this is what ive experienced in the last few days

when ive tried to contact them about getting my name on the engraved name plate they told me i cannot have it !?? i asked for it 2 days after i ordered this system and its now only gone into phase 2 of production.

am also pissed that alienware free tech support number (0800) is now (o845 something) and them i put through to the indian idiots.

ive also tried to order a alien respawn kit from dell and after 30 mins of being put through loads approx 40 indians I GAVE UP but i really want the cd.

i am pissed that dell has taken alienwares best things and turned it into theirs.

i dont suppose you guys can help ?
i really want this laptop but i might just ring them up and say FU.

    also to add,
when i rang alienware (0800) for information on my laptop they asked for my customer number and when i gave it they said "thats not our customer number"
so after fighting for 30 mins on the phone they said "its a dell customer number and i have to ring them"
ARE THEY F***ING KIDDING ME, THE SUPPORT TO A BUNCH OF FOREIGN INBREDS!!!

do you guys have any advice appart from canceling the order ??
