i have always wanted to buy an alienware computer whether it be desktop or laptop (for obvious reason, gaming of course!). ive been reading some threads on the m15x and im aghast at the number of complaints. i know dell bought alienware in 2006 (i think), and lets be honest dell is crap now...horrible quality computers. i have a dell e510 so dont tell me dell is good, i know the quality of dell computers. has this awful quality been transferred into the making of alienware computers?

if so what other gaming computers are out there comparable to the performance of alienware computers? and plz dont tell me the dell xps

    thanks

Just like anything you buy, nothing will last forever.

I am Extremly pleased with my m15x. The BC is just like most it isnt a rock, you need to take care of it as you would with any $3000.00 laptop.

If you take care of it, it will last you a long time.

i wouldnt call dell crap computers. I have never had any serious problems with them.
I can tell you straight out that paying more does not mean a longer lasting laptop. It just means that its going to hurt much more when it breaks.
For my experience, I have a $10750 voodoo after my investments. It has seen 1037 hours of use in 18 months. Do the math. 4 motherboards, two graphics cards, a dead memory card, a dead screen inverter, and a warranty I paid for which did nothing for me.
My Dell E1505 cost $2300 with the 5 year high end warranty customer care 1 day service and all. My touchpad died, i called dell, within three days I had a new touchpad. (would have been one day if it wasnt a sunday in between)
When my power supply died, that was the same. Two days I had a new power supply and I didnt have to pay anything.
Two small problems, and they were both resolved very fast. To give you a time of usage on the laptop as of now. 7827 hours according to hdtune.

Going with Dell is a much better choice. For one their warranty is amazing.
The only time I can say "you get what you paid for" with laptops is the warranty. Dells highest end warranty is awesome. No questions asked, and its fixed.
I paid nearly $1750 more for a warranty with voodoo. The second something broke, I called, and they do nothing for you. I had to pay the money for new motherboards, graphics card, screen inverter, memory, and so forth.

Alienware is a bit better than voodoo, but I must say that the besy warranty is definitely through dell.

Just whatever you do, do not every consider buying from voodoo, they are a bunch of conartists

I too disagree with your comments about Dell. I bought an M15X and had several problems that AW could not rectify. They gave me a complete refund after MUCH hassle.

I now have 2 XPS M1530's and love them. No issues at all and they do exactly what they were made to do. I too have the extended warranty and do not regret it at all.

I'll vouch for the Dell warranty. I ripped a key off my keyboard and they replaced it within 3 days. This was done on their basic 1 year warranty.

I'll also vouch for Dell quality. I migrated from an Inspiron 8200 which I've absolutely tortured with gaming since 2002 (and I'm still using it). Aside from minor issues resulting from natural wear and tear, it's been an absolute rock. Unless things have changed since 2002, Dell is the foremost commercial outfit I'd by my hardware from if I don't build it myself.

You might want to take a look at the Asus G50vt series gaming lappys. I bought mine in November and have been thrilled with it. Depending on where you buy it, they usually come with a 2 year warranty and a 1 year accidental damage warranty.

Regarding the quality of Dell, my E1505 is a rock. I've dropped it on pavement, left it in the freezing cold for hours, leave it on standby and pretty much treat it like crap, and it's still going strong. It's like a Honda.

I'll tell you this, I wanted the m15x, and went thru half a dozen different laptops in 5 months before I finally gave in and just got one. I have been completely satisfied with it ever since.

since 12 December 2007, my notebook has seen 8500 operating hours. i leave it on pretty much all day long. it runs exactly the same as i got it.

clean the dust out and get a notebook cooler and your DTR will be set for a while.

Everything I've read so far has been that Alienware's quality pre-Dell wasn't very good, and from what I've experienced, Dell has had little to no effect on Alienware's quality since. Like some of the others here, I've actually had significantly better experiences with Dell than with Alienware, so I would strongly recommend staying aware from Alienware if you want quality.

Up until my m15x I have been a dell owner and have always found their machines to be well built and very well covered in terms of warranty (best in the biz) I'm hoping some of this will rub off on alienware now that dell owns them

I honestly think that the AW build quality is very cheap. Just look at all the screen hinge problems the m15x has had. I don't regret buying the m15x but I'm not gonna buy another AW unless all indications says that they have made their machines rock solid.

Some sacrifices were made with the m15x to get it to be thin and light yet pack powerful hardware; the plastic used on the chassis is a bit thin.

In general, all of the Alienware machines I've handled and tested over the last three years have been good quality products so I wouldn't have a problem recommending them.

Dell taking over Alienware has nothing to do with Alienware's quality; Alienware is maintained and managed as a separate entity.

I originally found out about alienware when a flyer for their desktops came with a game I bought... and was most caught with the awesome looking chassis of the computer. Fall 2007 I had to drop out of art school and give back my macbookpro (the school gives them out to all new attending students) and so was without a good laptop.

I finally gave in when I saw the m15x... I read of all the problems here... haven't really had any of them. Only issue I had was a small crack on the back of my screen and they replaced it within 10 days (includes shipping to facility, repair, and journey back here).

Though people are right that the chassis is a little thin, like Chaz said it's because they wanted to make a smaller laptop with great capabilities and heating is an issue. Like all electronics you should treat them with great care and they will last.

When I get out of college and get a good job and all I'm probably going to invest in another notebook and probably a desktop of theirs.

the quality is only the brand name as we all bandwagonly believe, the support is good for me i know it's not good for some from what i have read.

i just had to buy one but now i did i also know i could build one myself for less costs and faster system with much better result and i am much happier now knowing i will never buy another alienware again.

i have wasted too much money on computers from now on i am going to build my own pc. i now have a computer with useless dual ati radeon 4870x2 that lacks support from ati itself. what hurts most is alienware australia didnt even bother to tell me before i bought mine that 1 week later after they took my money they would bring out a new computer. that really hurt me i think aw australia didn't even care about me they just want my money and even made me pay $350 to have it sent after i paid $8500.

Not telling me about the new computer that is about to be released in a week is plain greedy especially when i have asked them if they would be a new computer coming out in a couple of weeks as i didn't want to pay for the old technology they are selling on australian aw websites compared to the us aw. NOw they have to go fish in a new pond to find a new sucker.

the AW quality is normal every body sends out duds but for so much money they shouldn't as much as every one else. the m15x was plastic and thin it was small and powerful if you wanted a TANK shoulda got a m17 there tanks or a m17x. the m15x is nice computer shoved into a ugly body

true, i loved my m15x if only it had a good shell casing like the macbook pro aluminium body.
