It has yet to be seen, however after Win 7 officially releases if the notebook manufcaturers will once again crack down on ATI and make them not offer the mobile drivers directly from ATI as they did with Vista. Only time will tell.

what do you mean it has yet to be seen? Tony said Win7 does not require mobmod?

is this true or not? not that its a big hassle to mobmod, its just one less hassle to deal with.

Today you can get win7 drivers from ATI. Once Win 7 Officially releases, however it remains to be seen if ATI will continue to offer driver releases directly. In the past Notebook manufacturers cracked down on ATI and told them not to release mobile drivers which is why you have to mobmod them for Vista.

@Marvie.....Whats the reason behind notebook manufacturers stopping ATI from releasing mobile drivers?

Honestly, I have absolutely no idea, because nVidia always offered mobile drivers, but right around the release of Vista SP1 ATI just simply stopped offerering them. Which is why someone at drivers heaven spent countless hours figuring out how to create a program called MobilityModder that would push the information back into the inf files for notebook users. I think the notebook manufacturer's may have been having too many returns due to bad video drivers and wanted to control what went in there machines by releasing the drivers themselves after testing them, but thats just my theory. I bet you could browse through the forums at www.driverheaven.net and find the answer though.

    Cheers for the info Marvie!

and thanks KCUK for the link. I usually like testing BETAs but Im gunna decline. Video drivers are such an important feature and I would want to avoid any possible bugs.

at least we can assume that 9.10 official is just around the corner.

    I just stumbled across this:
    Here: http://www.techarena.in/download/graphics-driver/ati-mobility-modder.htm

Not a complete answer but it gets at what I was saying anyway.

Oh by the way, this was also before MXM became the standard laptop socket for graphics and OEM's had to design their graphics into their mobo's so now that MXM has taken hold maybe there's hope yet.

oh so it boils down to not having the permission to provide support. Surely this will change over time?

    anyway thanks Marvie.
