hey guys and gals.
just had a little look around and been reading a small amount about vista 64bit basically. one website states that it runs about 10% faster than the 32 bit version(which i have installed) also that it would fully recognise my 4GB of ram(rather than displaying it as 3GB in my version) just wondering if any has the 64 bit version installed that could give a little insight for me, or if anyone else has any information that maybe useful. how about compatability issues with programs? would i have to download new versions of the ones i have installed?

While it is evident that you did take the time to research 64-bit Vista online, I really recommend that you search NBR's Windows sub-forum for "64-bit Vista". There are hundreds of threads exactly like yours.

Read my signature, You will certainly gain performance over 32bit. cannot be measured and depends upon applications that you are using... some may under perform on 64bit as well if not written properly.
Vista will be more responsive on 64bit, you will get more bandwidth for data transfer from RAM <<==>> Processor, faster data access rate from HDD are the few benefits you will get. -
I'm curious about this as well. I'm in the market for a laptop, and faced with the 32 vs 64 bit Vista choice. I want the benefits but not the headaches. For work, I have to use Cisco VPN Client, but that only works with 32 bit until Cisco caves in and does something about it. Last I heard they were stating that customers need to rewrite their server protocols if they want to run 64 bit Vista. I know nothing about that so I have to believe what I hear. I can't find a definitive list of what does and does not work, and yes including Vista list. I'm thinking of an HP laptop, and heard that HP has probably the most extensive list of 64 bit compatible drivers. I'm hoping someone can provide some advice. Oh, and JellyBeans, thanks for the link to Google, so I can find the link to NBR, search on 64 bit and find this thread where some wisea$$ puts in a link to Google. So, for those of you willing to actually help, thanks in advance. I'm only looking for advice from those who have gone through it. I have been looking in the other threads here as well, but if you have a particular thread you know would be helpful that would great.

Dave if you absolutely need Cisco VPN client and they do not have 64 bit support yet then you have two options.. go for what sounds good to you.
- Go for 32bit Vista on the hardware of your choice
- Dual boot into 32bit & 64bit on separate partitions
- Go for 64bit Vista & Install Virtual PC on it with 32bit XP or vista on top of it to use 32bit applications natively
Dell & HP usually do not have any problems with 64bit and due to bigger market share they indirectly/directly force hardware vendors to provide 64bit drivers for the hardware they use.
I would make a list of software that I cant live without and get a confirmation from software vendor to go 64bit. -
OR
just get vikas to rewrite it to work with 64bit
benefits of 64bit vista?
