well, i think ppl call them what they find easier. for games and computer stuff is stupid but... I'm more and more convinced it will catch on, next we'll see nvidia selling their cards with those specs :D

PS the WXXX system is as stupid, maybe call them 1920x1200 or what ever it is.

I'll refer to it as 1200p as that is what Alienware has it listed as on their website. It's shorter than typing 1920x1200, and it's not as misleading as referring to it as 1080p. The screen displays 1920x1200 pixels progressively, therefore, 1200p. Monitors have been touting this for a while. Why is it an issue when Alienware uses it? What are you guys going to do when 1440p comes out? Complain about that too? How about 2160p?

    Thanks though.

I agree, 1200p sounds better than WUXGA. I mean my dell has a WUXGA so I know is 1920x1200 but no idea what other W?XGA are. Still better the 1920x1200 when u actually need to specify the resolution (like when you run 3dmark and u need to say how).

Because monitors aren't truely progressive scan.
IT's hard to explain but 1920x1080 isn't 1080p either, 1080p is a resolving format, not resolution

Because calling them "1200p" implies that, like 720p and 1080p, it is referring to a 16:9 resolution. Therefore, people reading your posts think that the resolution offered is something like 2133x1200. "1200p" is not a recognized resolution, and the screens have WUXGA, or 1080p + 60-pixel "bars" on the top and bottom of the screen.

Just because Alienware chooses to confuse its customers doesn't mean that a website, meant to help people (usually confused already) decide about laptops, should use the same misleading term.

So, now you are talking about playing a video at 1080p to produce those bars. Ok, games and anything else will display without the bars. The computer screen itself is still 1920x1200 pixels displayed progressively. Still 1200p. I still don't see it as misleading.

Okay, here is why we should stop calling it 1200p and 720p.

    1. Alienware has basically used this to market to the less experienced who immediately when they see it think "wow this is better than 1080P!"

    2. 1200p referes to a 16:9 aspect ratio. However, 1920x1200 is actually a 16:10 aspect ratio.

    3. Don't even call the 1400x900 720p, that is the worst. 720p = 1280 x 768 or something like that (once again is a 16:9 ratio). I don't even know how they got 720p fro 1440x900. They may as well call it 900p!

I hate Alienware marketing, it is just making everyone who talks about them seem like more and more of a newbie when it comes to technology. If you talk to someone professionally about Alienware don't bring up 720p or 1200p or they will most likely snicker at you.

I hope other companies don't adapt. As Floyd said Alienware is just trying to confuse their customers and this should not be adopted as a standard because it is just plain stupid in my opinion.

well most notebooks out right now are 16:10, and '1200p' is more understandable and more easily explainable to people rather than 'WUXGA'. Its just maximum resolution. another reason people refer to it as '1200p' is that it has the ability to play movies in full '1080p', the extra pixels are just not used. most normal people understand the common vernacular (they go to best buy they're gonna want to know the 'p' not WXGA, WUXGA, WQXGA, etc.).

So that's why I've been seeing so many people say 1200p around the forums. I just thought there was a new drug going around.

WUXGA is the standard form to call a 1920x1200 screen. When you say XXXXp, all of us tech guys are automatically going to think TV. And then we're going to ask you what drug you're on. Please share.

The sad thing is that nobody near me knows what WUXGA is. I had to educate the sales people. :(

I wanted to see WUXGA on a 15 inch but of course nobody carries it. Figures.

Most monitors these days are widescreen, which makes a rare resolution like UXGA even rarer.

Oh, well then, that doesn't exist. The smallest desktop monitor these days with WUXGA I believe is 22 inches.

It's just the typical dumbing down offered by all companies specialising in gaming centered hardware. Whether it's "gaming" headphones, or stupid flashing LED's etc. They're marketing towards school-kids instead of the real meat and veg' of the community.

I e-mailed Alienware about this and they came up with such a bull**** explanation.

They say the reason the WUXGA is called 1200p, is because the software will upscale the 1080p format to the 1200 physical pixels, BUT they don't do the same with the WXGA+ because even though it does the EXACT SAME THING to 900 pixels, they say because it can't do 1080p, it can only be called 720p because 900p isn't a recognised format.

WTF! Neither is "1200p" you schmuchs.

I hate the way gaming is cool and acceptable nowadays, and aimed at socially backward children with all their special gaming headphones, gaming keyboard and gaming socks. I preferred it in the days when it was still classed as nerdy.

Three cheers to the nerd culture! :)

I also agree. Blatantly rewriting a naming standard to fit your own marketing hype is way out of line! 1200p should only mean 2133 (or I'll accept 2130) X 1200.

I never thought that I would be so dissatisfied with a company due to moral outrage (well, except Microsoft that is ;) )!

hang on, it is 1200p meaning that ALL lines are shown at once that is all it means. They are within their rights to call it that. The only reason your so familiar with 720p and 1080p is that it's a buzz word atm from the movie industry as the standard met by the forums for High Definition and Full High Definition formats. 1080p is native resolution on Blu Ray discs meaning a screen that has 1080p will display "dot by dot". 1200p is possible as its a progressive screen capable of showing all pixels at the same time instead of an alternating interlaced standard.

The 'p' and 'i' is a suffix used in video broadcasting standards. It is not indicative of hardware. There's a difference in saying something like a computer screen is "progressive scan" (which is obvious, and provides no useful information), and taking the vertical pixel count and sticking a 'p' at the end of it to make it look like a video standard.

We have a High Definition TV, that is a piece of hardware capable of displaying 720p AND 1080i video standards. To do this the hardware needs a minimum of 720 physical vertical pixels, and the ability to display video in progressive scan and interlaced formats. If it can do this, then it's 720p and 1080i ready/compatible etc etc
If it had 768 vertical pixels for some reason, it wouldn't be a ""768p"" TV. It would still be a TV capable of showing 720p and 1080i video.

720p 1080i and 1080p are NOT buzzwords. They are video standards. "1200p" is NOT a video standard, it's a made-up combination of numbers with a suffix to appear in the same formatting as a HD video standard.

WHICH EVER way you look at it, either the "720p" display should be called 900p to be consistent, or the 1920x1200 display should be advertised as being able to show 1080p video, just as the 1440x900 is advertised as being able to show 720p video even though it has 900 vertical pixels.

    here's my thought on this...

its their marketing strategy to call it 1200p whether its true 1200p or not its debatable... but i think its easier to call it 1200p than wuxga, because most people (average joes) dont know the term wuxga, wxga, etc, they only know 720p and 1080p thanks to the movie industry...

now, when they say 1200p, isnt it easier to tell the difference than say "900p" instead of wuxga and wxga... numbers are good for all the non-techie people! althou i doubt nobody who owns alienware doesnt know anything about computers... well maybe its for those parents who dont know anything about tech terms and wanna buy it for their kids, etc, basically its just their marketing system!

maybe they wanna reach those people more now, because so far alienware is known only for the gamers, computer savvies, the geeks... maybe using "1200p" is easier to understand than using the word WUXGA...

now, if ur upset because its misleading, well, are those people really care about what exactly the resolution for 1200p is? i think all they care about is that theyre screen will be better than 900p! if you care so much then, just say it as WUXGA and you will be fine, why bother get upset with people who say it as 1200p...

technically (or i can say morally too) wrong n misleading? yea i think i could say that, but who can make them change? do we really need like million signature petition or something like that? anybody wanna try to sue them? i guess the answer is not...

right now am furious n mad not because of the "1200p" or "900p" but because they delayed my freakin lappy coz they said the monitors are backordered!!! aaaaarh! check on the other thread for this monitor backorder story!

But again like others you've missed the other point. They don't call the 1440x900 screen 900p, they call it 720p.

If you want to call it a convenient incorrect buzzword instead of it's proper name, this is known as dumbing down, and it's easier to say 1200 vs 900, than 1200 p vs 720 p screen. Why add the p? It's like saying I'm getting a new car, it's a VW Polo (4 wheels). It's useless extra information that's confusing as it's written as if it were a HD video standard.

Then again due to a typo, and an ignorant public taking it on-board, Aluminium is called Aluminum over there too. It could just as easily have been Titanum, Sodum, Magnesum etc etc

Alienware also has no need to appeal to the general public. It's a boutique brand. Dell caters for the rest. They shouldn't dumb things down, but I guess they'll just go with whatever makes money, hence re-branding headphones as some kind of "gamer" headphones.

    I hate the world lol

When I hear 1200p, I think of a 50" hdtv. the m15x is definetly not that. They should start saying things like -huge 1900X1280 or whatever

haha! you see, welcome to the marketing strategy 101 guys... again it will be easier on the average joes to understand and relate with the "p" as now "p" is related to monitor screens and resolution

i know AW shouldve been staying as "boutique" computer, but hey big companies dont care about anything else other than making money!!!
nonetheless for now, they are still premium and general people will not buy this expensive computer which they can get much cheaper with other brands, but dont u guys think they're starting to reach more general average joes looking for a sleek looking computers?

That doesn't bother me so much. Car manufacturers for example when they've designed a decent all round car, will always offer a watered down lifeless engine and suspension variant for the more superficial members of society who just want the brand or the look.

What annoys me is dumbed down marketing like this, and stupid patronising catch-phrases like "built in mic for smack talk", "be the envy of everyone in your class with these 6 lighting zones, and shiny paint" and all that bollocks.
Don't even get me started on some of the "gaming" hardware. To be fair it's not just Alienware. I think it's just the new fashion in marketing. The X-Fi was marketed the same way by Creative. All I wanted to know was the SNR, THD and other variables, but instead you get swamped with rubbish on how now I'm going to hear my enemy coming from different angles, and therefore will be superior etc. It just ruins it for me. The X-Fi is a decent bit of hardware, I think the M15x is too. I just hate the way it's dumbed down and marketed at school kids and social sub-normals who think they only exist in some game.

It's not truth though. There is no 1200p format. All it can do is upscale 1080p. In which case I could play a YouTube video that was recorded on a mobile phone, then make it full screen and claim 1536p, or 3072p if I stick one monitor on the other...

Do you not understand that although 1080p means a video standard that is progressive scan and has 1080 vertical pixels; something with 1200 vertical pixels, that is progressive scan, doesn't automatically assume the xxxxp/i naming convention.

1080p is just a name. Just like the Toyota MR2 which was named after what it is (MidengineRearwheeldrive2seater). If you converted your Toyota MR2 to 4 wheel drive, that doesn't mean you now own a Toyota MR4, as there's no such THING as an MR4. There is no such standard as 1200p. There is such thing as a screen with 1200 vertical pixels, no-one is disputing that. Computer monitors are progressive scan, no-one is disputing that either.

The 1440x900 screen is also fully capable of downscaling 1080p to 900 pixels, or upscaling 720p video to 900 pixels, so why don't they call this 900p? Simple. Because everyone knows the next step up from 720 is 1080 so they wouldn't get away with it. With 1200p they can play on the fact 1440p isn't out yet, as so try to push it as some "even more P than 1080!`!!!1!"

and hey, look, we have 1200p monitor available too! (which basically the same WUXGA), also included, built in webcam and mic, wooow! and while you're at it, dont forget about our smart bay also! oooh aaaah!!!

heck, not only watered down car ur talkin about, AW will have the "watered down" version too soon!!! see now how they're tryin to reach the general masses! i agree if AW should only be exclusive premium brand, but hey thats only in the perfect world isn't it?

P refers to progressive. I see no problem with labeling the monitor as 1200p as it is referring to the number of pixels displayed progressively. Your beef is that that the industry as a whole has not adopted a 1200 pixel resoultion as a standard, and I get that, but it doesn't mean that it isn't an acceptable resolution. Why is it such a bother to you all? They aren't lying about the screen quality. They aren't lying about the number of pixels. They gave it a name that indicates a higher res than 1080p.

WUXGA has been used for this same reason for years, but as someone else pointed out, the average consumer more than likely doesn't know what that is. They are however familiar with pixel numbers since the tv and movie industry has assaulted everyone with advertising campaigns touting the benefits of more pixels. 1200p makes it clear to everyone that it has more pixels than a 1080p screen and of course they are displayed progressively.

We'll have to agree to disagree. I think Alienware is well withing their right to call the res 1200p. Regardless of what anyone thinks though, they screen is labeled 1200p on their site so it is simpler to refer to it as such. Which is of course my so many people just say "1200p" as opposed to "1920x1200". 1200p isn't going away anytime soon.

Yep. I'm just having a general moan at the world really. :D

If the other Clevo resellers came up with some of their own chassis designs that looked a bit more robust and less directionless than the current offerings, and offered something like a SmartBay they'd take my business.

Raziel, show me an interlaced computer display. My CRT at home is a Sony Multiscan display. So is it a 1536p or 1536ms or maybe a 1536pms? My engine has a hemi-spherical combustion chamber by design, but it's not American, it's not a V8, does that mean I have a 1272cc I4 HEMI block?

And you've STILL missed the point. You're defending their reasoning for calling their 1920x1200 screen 1200p, now defend their reasoning for calling the 1440x900 screen 720p. You seem to have missed this.

Again, it's marketing. It's all about marketing. If you want to go ahead and call your resolution XXXXP, you can do so. Why? Because at the end of the day they are still displaying progressively and that's what the "p" stands for. I never said there was an interlaced computer display.

If Alienware wants to call it 900p, why not? I'm going to ***** and moan about it. It's their choice and they aren't misleading anybody that knows that those numbers refer to pixel counts.

Wow, really? As I said, it's marketing. They can call it whichever one they want, 720p or 900p. It's their right and it's their marketing department that's making the choice. You don't like it? Tell them. Otherwise, who cares? 1200p refers to the amount of pixels on screen, obviously more than 1080, and can display a sharper image than 1080p. Why they went with 720p over 900p I couldn't tell you. I don't work for them.

Now, calm down. Take some anger management courses and take a break from the internet because you are clearly taking all of this way too seriously.

I think this is starting (or was from the beginning) a bit useless thread. I mean ppl and companies will call their products how they want we just need to click the "full details" buttons.

They shouldn't **** some standards just because they have no idea what they sell. They should use their screens real capabilities as a marketing tool, not invent some ****ing new "standards".
There is no 1200p. It refers to Alienware's marketing department as being idiots.

I hate both systems, 720p and 1080p are misleading, since neither refer to them being 16:10, and are just marketing terms used by companies to try sell a product.

And I simply dislike WUXGA/UXGA etc. since its just too complitcated for the information it needs to give, and every company that uses it also has to give the pixel no.s anyway since very few people know what WUXGA/etc. refers to straight away.

I don't really think there should be a 'system' refering to any sort of screen, they should just do something like this:

    Aspect ratio: 16:9
    Resolution: 1920x1200
    Contrast: 1000:1

or whatever, it gives you the information. And most corporate problems arise from people using 'techy' terms which noone else understands and everything has to be clarified before anything can be done.

Hmmm from the day the fun for me started in color (IBM's VGA 640x480) I'm used to terms like VGA,SVGA, etc.. So for me I'm more comfortable calling it what it really is which would be WUXGA (for 1920x1200), it is also easy to type Raziel66 (Post#3) :D

    Well...1920*1200 is not 16:9, it's 16:10. 1080p (1920*1080) is 16:9. Misleading, eh?

i agree too. when people talk "1200p" or 720p, they're typically talking about resolution (not p vs i). If ur talking resolution, use resolution language.

    I say:
    "1200p, 720p" = when talking about TVs
"1920x1200", "1440x900" = when talking about laptop monitors.

Nice come back ;) but therefore also for the end user should there be a standard why not the 1 it has always been. Easy to look up and explained. So what should happen is to simply add the 720p and 1080p to the "VGA series" the same way and continue the 'line'.

I think my knowledge of the English language maybe in the way here..
VGA, XGA, etc. this way of writing it down should be continued instead of companies making up standards along the way... This is useful for everybody technician or consumer. Either way if you don't know what it means you have to look it up anyway either the one way or the other.
Global standards set up and accepted by groups rather then single companies...

    Better I hope

I'm not angry, I was just repeating myself without the excess text with emphasis on why I think they're dumb. I also know it's typical marketing, I said this earlier too. I'm just expressing my hatred of dumbed down marketing, and the fact it's just plain wrong and inconsistent no matter which side you support.
But you do see it's cheeky/crafty/sneaky/dumb/misleading/gay to call one a fictional 1200p to oversell it, and the other a real format of 720p to undersell (as it can do 900).

It's blatantly done to subliminally catch people out, as I emailed them about it and got fluffy inconsistent answers back from them. Their excuse for using 1200p tag could equally apply for calling the other smaller screen 900p, and the separate and opposite excuse they used to justify the 720p tag could equally be used to call the bigger screen 1080p. They had not a leg to stand on, because they know exactly what they're doing, I'm just calling it out as lame :D

    How about

This is a forum full of impatient computer nuts all waiting for their notebooks, and it's a way of passing the time by moaning at the company mucking you about. Nobody is angry at each other in real life here, well I'm certainly not.

Nor here. The wait just sucks. It'll be nice once the supply issues are settled and all options are available.

The dell m1730 is starting to look nice now though :(
