I have found that on many AVI and DVD movies the gamma setting needs to be increased along with the contrast. My default gamma is set at around 10% of full scale for my normal desktop applications and my contrast set to aboout 30%. I noticed that at these settings movies seem to be a little on the dark side-that is dimly lit scenes are hard to view because of lack of brightness/contrast. You should play around with the nVidia control panel while watching a movie to find the optimal settings for these controls that suit your own viewing tastes.
