I'm kind of a noob here...

I want to known the differences between beteween m17x m17 and m9750.

PLEASE CORRECT ME if I'm wrong.

    From what I known...
The m9750 is an Alienware exclusive (before Flexitronics bought Arima)
The differences between the m17 and the ocz whitebook is the bios, the keyboard and the skullcap design (and alienware also offers it with a lower resolution screen)
The differences between m9750 and the m17 is the Ram and the cpu.
ichime found out that the 3750 works in crossfire in m9750.

The m17x is the same as the m17? the only change is the gpu's that they offer to configure? will the m17x work with ati3750 crossfire?
who makes the m17x? dell? flexitronics? other?

The M17x is significantly different from the M17. The M17x is actually a proprietary design from Quanta (largest notebook ODM that make notebooks for Dell, Gateway, HP and other companies). Tomshardware said that the M17x motherboard, however, was made by ASUS, but this is unlikely because ASUS would have used that same design in their 17 inch G series notebooks, which they haven't. The M17x uses a Santa Rosa platform and the M17 uses the Montevina (Centrino 2 platform), which is newer and has a faster FSB than the Santa Rosa.

As for the ATi 3870 working in the M17x, I do not know, but it remains likely as it is unlikely unless someone tests it (likely because of what I did with the M9750 and the ATi 3870, and unlikely because Quanta is notorious for making their parts proprietary, meaning that parts are not interchageable with parts from other manufacturers).

Like ichime said, the M17x is made by Quanta (you can check this in the bios and apparently with CPU-Z as well) However, I'll have to add that even if the M17x uses an Asus mobo, Asus can not freely take the design from an OEM and use it in their own laptops due to copyright regulations/laws.

Also note that the M17 does not have smart bay, where as the m17x does. Though I don't think there is a smart bay battery for the m17x.

The difference between Montevina and Santa Rosa are not very noticeable. The m9750 is the oldest of the bunch. Its hardware is starting to get dated so I would recommend the M17 if you're on a budget or the m17x either way.

You should also take into account that ATi Driver support is also questionable.

Is the M17 crossfire capable? because I known it can work with a single 9800M GTS
M9750 works with crossfire and sli.
there are any other builder besides Alienware that sells the m15x?

Only alienware sells the M9750, M15x, and M17x. The M17 is sold by numerous manufactures as Alienware does not "own" the design. Basically here is how I look at it.

M17 : For gamers on a budget or for multimedia / design workers as you can put a Quad Core in there which is really helpful for CPU intensive programs.

M17x : For hard core gamers. The processors are outdated however the GPU's are the fastest of the bunch. You can go faster with Dual 9800GTX's but I do not believe AW offers that yet in the M17x.

M9750 : There really isn't a reason to buy this laptop anymore. Sure you can upgrade to Dual 3870's but the processor and the RAM limitation (only 2.5GB MAX) really holds it back. The tech is outdated so I'd reccomend just bumping up to a low level config of the M17 which has a lot more potential.

    m9750= waste of money

m17x is older and kinda pricey but has smart bay and pretty lights!!!!!! and the GPU's are still really nice and can play just about any game on high :D. SLI

m17 is a nice gaming laptop with potential. it has 3870's in cross fire now and has confirmed support for 4870's ddr5 from AW which will blow up the 9800m gt :D it also uses the montevina platform that lets it use ddr3 ram and 1066 mhz front side bus

Are you sure? I thought the two 9800m gt SLI rock the hell and the 4870 (in the W90) just heat the hell?

Ah and the argument that the nvidia driver support is mutch better than the ati is a quite good .. but! There are, especially here, who will help you keep your ATI driver up to date!

    Greetings

Quicksilver's the only (semi-)announced one so far. we might see a return to Clevo rebranding though (d900f or m980-something).

I think whizzo is referring to that (deleted) thread about Alienware where that dude that was laid off posted an inside letter from the AW's GM this morning. Arthur mentioned it there no?

M17 is sick ! lol DDR3 massive possibilities with the cpu (in terms of upgrades)
cant go wrong with dual 3870s. It is a bit large though but its well worth it. I only have the 2.26 ghz cpu dual 3870s and 4gb ram i got off new egg. Its a beast and I don't even have anywhere close to the best config and it rocks all the games i play. (if you are looking to get M17 id go with a better CPU i think its the 2.53ghz that starts with the 6mb cache not the 3mb cache, I would go with that one as a min, but then again if your like me and a poor collage kid you may have to sacrifice and upgrade later.)
