like the title, do they still downclock or get to hot, or has the new bios fixed the problem, any different in the newer m15x units?

I have not seen major issues on the m15x 9000 downclocking. I do see the same people who had problems who sound like a broken record over and over. So they kinda bring in false info.

    best idea is keep researching.

Unfortunately we on the forum havent had any new members getting the laptop with the x9000 as it has been said repeatedly that it will overheat and downclock. So dont know about the "latest" batches of m15x with the x9000, on the other hand before on the initial batches of x9000 the new BIOS did not solve the overheating and downclocking. So there is no reason to assume that the new ones would be any different.

It was assumed by Alienware that the problem exists and they are trying to work on a solution (for the past 3 months). As no solution has been put forward by AW yet, I think it's safe to assume that the M15x simply can't handle the extreme processor.

Disregard what people say regarding "broken records and blah blah blah blah..." as they have nothing factual to say regarding this issue. You can know for a fact that the vast majority (if not 100%) of owners with the extreme CPU have downclocking. (appart from a minority that opened the computer and used "home" solutions that involve applying your own thermal paste)

More... If you look on the CPU downclocking thread (search for it), you will find owners that received the laptop recently and are experiencing the downclock.

    Good luck with your choices,
    M.

I ordered the 2.6 Ghz coz the difference was just .2 GHz , which is quite minimal and not really worth the price..plus i felt i was on the safer side as did the CS guy who sold me the laptop..

as far I as I know. Everyone that has the x9000 is downclocking. You do have those few that changed the Thermal paste and now they don't but its my understanding that changing the thermal paste will void your warranty.

    What a completely biased claim.

Where's your research on whether or not it downclocks, hmm?

I'd like to see your substantiation for "I have not seen major issues on the m15x x9000 downclocking."

When has it NOT downclocked? With the exception of markus.kainer, who doesn't count because he upgraded his own CPU.

I have the X9000 procesor, and YES it downclocks, I recently bought GRID RACE, the first couple of races the game works fine, at the third race, the game begins to lag, this happened each 7 - 10 seconds. I thought it was the game and began searching the net to find a solution; I read that the problem could come from downclocking of the CPU, so, I used the RMClock utility to log all the CPU behavior, and what do you think, at the time I was actually playing the game the CPU downgraded to 800 mhz (from the actual 2.8 it has)each 8 to 10 seconds.

So, yes the CPU downclocks when it really gets hot, I will be conducting further tests and will let you know the results.

Ok, Alienware told me to upgrade to X34 and (you're right whizzo) it shouldn't downclock anymore; more news coming up once I upgrade the BIOS...
