ok so here is a very good question for you ....
when you first buy your computer with your qx9300
how long to wait until you really start to overclock it....now from talking to the alienware people they told me in the lab they are tested very hard core before they even leave....big time stress test ...to try to get them to fail.....whats your take on that

thanks mandrake ...justs seems nuts they run them super hard and there is no true way to see if they do it right or wrong....seating it right .....but oh well ...i thought i did some reading somewhere that you have to take your time when you start to clock them up ...
-
Well I changed my proc about 20 minutes after I got it. Once my x9100 was installed I started OC'ing.

If your talking about my 06 score it was at 3.3Ghz.

As soon as i put the quad in my whitebook, the bios was the first thing to pop up

your goal is 3.2ghz
tell us what your doing and your settings. -
are you talking to me?
-
I *HIGHLY* doubt they're stress tested as claimed.
In fact, I'm pretty sure that although the M17's were claimed to as well, the file of "results" thrown on the desktop was generic for each processor/GPU config. -
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
cpu at 3.16ghz 1333mhz fsb, 333bus speed
also everything at 1333mhz and the highest multipler at that fsb at 1333.
and if you can break 1333 using nst...
just multiplier alone at 3.33ghz and if you can go higher
your stable and your highest unstable
and some random overclocks.....
i just want them to look at and compare. i don't have my qx9300 so i can't do it myself.
otherwise i would just use setfsb and multipliers and did it. -

i beg to differ...they do infact do just that -
I'll create a new informational thread for this.
-

and i should of taking a screen shot of demigod.....
if ocz and alienware didn't sell the same notebook then i would of believed you... but if that's the whitebook on a warm day with stock gpu's.........
and i know 100000000000 percent there is not nothing changed between the whitebook and the m17 except for the keyboard, bios, lid. after owning one i see other alienware computers as normal computers. i thought they were this overpriced company that doesn't do anything. but know to me there a pretty cheap company that.....
at least on there notebook. i don't know about there desktops. that i would believe
@mandrake.
thanks alot. -
Actually I'll add to my fsb:memory thread since I have some in there already.

on the first post would be nice and can you bump it up?

I think don was under the impression you had a machine with a Qx9300 already ?.

my whole point and question was when they build the laptops ...do they infact stress the crap out of them and test them and overclock them before you actually get it in your hands.......and the second question was how long until you should actually overclock let it set for a few days first at normal speed ...ect... -
Let it set at normal speeds? My laptop hasn't seen normal speeds xD.
To my knowledge they don't need to "settle in". Some thermal pastes need to cure which would possibly limit your OC, but not prevent it. -
I really dont think they have the time to stress them for all that long . probably just a vantage run and BAM!! its shoved in a box and out the door lol. Thats what the tech support is for if ya got problems.
In reality there is no way they could possibly run all the things many people will on there machines anyhow .
I would say for certain they dont overclock anything period CPU etc before it leaves either .
If they did all that we would be waiting months before any of us got a machine . -
hey ben you might wanna fix your Sig before a Mod catches it

Its too long, guess thats what Moo is refering to. See the forum rules.

Your Welcome. It's just very irritating if signatures are taking almost 80% of a thread. scroll... scroll **sigh*** scroll...
On topic again! I didn't overclock my proc! I just wanted the best I could get in this machine...But I can if I want too... But I agree, that it's just a simple test before they ship the machine... Else we wouldn't have HW issues to talk about here -

-
First of all, what I said was that I HIGHLY doubt they stress test them at ALL.
Secondly, I can guarantee you that they don't overclock them before they send them out. -
benthedogtrainer Notebook Evangelist
-
What I'm saying is their claim of ALL of them being stress tested is BS. -
I agree as thats just unrealistic for any product period.

so now back to my question please.....work with me here...
when they DO test them ...how do they do it ...for ex run 3dmark in loop for a hour then overclock or run 3dmark for a day turn off the computer for a little while then back on and then overclock.....let me please explain why i ask ...when i called and spoke to one of the owners of artic silver he explained to me that you cannot for any thermal paste or at least you shouldn't just put it on then over clock your suppost to give "burn in time" and then go for it ...please understand i am just trying to learn...brotha. -
Ill bet they run there diagnostic tests and thats about all .
-
benthedogtrainer Notebook Evangelist
-
Well i guess i would say then believe what they tell you vs what i said ? OCCT ? not buying it honestly . 3dmark ? sure but Vantage is not bringing anything to its knees quite honestly atleast a stock system its not and i know there not overclocking GPUs nor CPUs because those conditions are not real for the average consumer. Id love to talk to all these people your talking to because i would have plenty of questions for them.

The thermal solution Alienware puts on is crap anyways.
Not all pastes have a "SET" time. Arctic Silver does.
It's under warranty, just do what you want with it. -
. 600 Grand ?? what the heck are you buying there lol. ?
The couch you need is not the one in your home.

Most people you get on the phone are going to tell you what you want to hear anyhow just to get you off the phone . I think your making this out to be a much bigger deal then it is quite honestly . Get a machine put it through its paces and if it fails call Dell/Alienware and have them come fix it etc. These are not rocket ships here with your life depending on it and theres always the off chance that even if they tested it to no end that it would still crap out on you right out of the box. Stuff happens thats life yada yada yada

the cooling on the m17x is far superior to the m17 and the m15x. but if they did test this two previous unit, they wouldn't be released. the m15x hit over 100c easy on the gpu's. the m17 gets hot all over. it's hard to break 100c but you can very close to it.
the m17x even though it can pass occt, it won't pass it overclocked heavy(gpu's). that's all a lie. maybe there pre-production model. that system will go threw hell but not systems they are going to release for people. -
benthedogtrainer Notebook Evangelist
thanks for your opinion...i do appreciate it alot and i do learn from other people's opinion....i thought there were some that did pass oct overclocked -
Yea I can confirm that Alienware doesn't test their systems thoroughly enough.
If Alienware had tested both their M5550 and M15x neither of them would have been released. While 3dmark does stress the system, it is nowhere close to how much a game can stress a computer after 2-3 hours. -
benthedogtrainer Notebook Evangelist
unless you run 3dmark in loop for 3 hours...are you kidding me
does it come stress tested as they claim ?
