Go into the BIOS to make sure they are enabled there first.

I tried going through my BIOS, but couldn't see anything that looked like enabling SLI, unless it's referred to as something else in the BIOS

my Function + F7 key doesn't work most of the time when I try to use it, so I was just look'n for another way to activate it

If you go to graphics options there will be 2 options at the top set them both to disabled as this will force the cards to run without 9400m getting in the way . This is for being plugged in though and if you decide to run on battery it will tell you to proceed it has to enable the 9400m again .

aha, so Hybrid SLI does only use the 9400 & one 260/280, right?

Hybrid SLI is limited on the M17x to (can't remember what it's called) switching to the 9400M from a discrete card(s). It doesn't use GeForceBoost (what you're thinking of-actually using a 9400M and dedicated card together) due to the 9400M being so weak compared to the dedicated card, performance gain wouldn't exist.

Each card has 1 gigabyte of memory but that memory is mirroed using SLI so you only get to use 1gig period.
