I recently ordered an alienware m17x with a single Nvidia geforce gtx 260m. I was wondering if it would be possible to install a second gtx 260m later on down the road. Is it even worth it? Would I need to get a bigger battery to support two cards?

It is possible to install a second gtx260, you can even purchase it from Dell/AW. and no your current battery will do just fine.

And if your using it to game. deffinetly worth it.

I don't think the performance of getting a second 260 card later on warrents the $450 cost. Just wait for the ATI 5000 series next year, one of those will be more than enough, but will still cost you an arm and leg.
